Karnataka High Court warns against weaponisation of law
The court was hearing a petition filed by realtor Vilas Bhormalji Oswal from Solapur, Maharashtra, questioning the proceedings pending before a special court brought about by his business partner under provisions of the IPC and SC/ST Act. 'The complainant, to wreak vengeance or arm-twist the petitioner over a financial dispute, has made use of the criminal justice system. The complaint is a blade of vengeance, cloaked in the garb of law. A criminal trial, if permitted to proceed, would amount to an egregious abuse of legal machinery,' said Justice M Nagaprasanna.
The court said apart from the delay of 118 days in lodging the complaint before the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, which sat on it for over three years, no casteist remark was made. A financial dispute between two partners is projected to become a crime, court said.
The complainant Somashekara, Oswal and two others were partners in a real estate firm, Green Land Infra, in the city. The dispute surfaced because the petitioner did not sign several documents, resulting in various developments being stalled. The petitioner allegedly threatened the complainant with dire consequences if he did not receive his invested money back from the firm and hurled abuses on December 23, 2020.

Mother's friend arrested for sexually assaulting girl
Thiruvananthapuram: Punalur police on Thursday arrested a man under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act for sexually assaulting the daughter of his female friend. According to police, the accused, a native of Kollam, assaulted the girl by threatening to release her private photos. He started assaulting her when she was a minor and continued it for years until she turned 22. The survivor finally filed a complaint as the accused shared her photos with some of her family members after she received a formal marriage proposal. Police said that the survivor's parents are legally separated, and the accused moved in with her and her mother to a rented flat 10 years ago. "After she received a marriage proposal the accused even demanded that the survivor marry him. When the mother resisted, he shared her photos with the girl's uncle and another person in her family," police said. The accused went absconding after police registered the case. However, a police team arrested him from Perinthalmanna.

Six held for illegal felling of teak trees near Terei banks
Aizawl: Forest officials under the Zamuang Forest Range of Kawrthah forest division, Mizoram environment, forests & climate change department, arrested five individuals and one alleged employer on June 29 for illegal felling of teak trees within a protected plantation area near the banks of the Teirei river. The arrests were made during a forest protection operation. The accused were caught in the act of cutting down trees from the '1991 Teak Plantation' — a plantation established by the forest department — without authorisation. The operation was led by the range officer and his staff as part of routine surveillance duties along the riverbanks. Following their arrest, a case was registered at the Mamit district court on July 1 under the supervision of the assistant conservator of forests, Kawrthah division. The six accused have since been remanded to judicial custody. The forest department noted that the teak plantation, set up in the early 1990s, has witnessed increasing incidents of unauthorised tree felling in recent times. Despite ongoing protection efforts, these illegal activities have continued. The site of the latest offence falls under the 1991 Department Teak Plantation and overlaps with the Teirei Riverine Reserved Forest and Tut-Langkaih Protected Council Reserved Forest. Felling and removing trees from these protected areas without permission is a punishable offence that can lead to imprisonment. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Mizoram (Forest) Act, 1955 and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

Couple arrested for ₹2.11 crore investment and job fraud in Cyberabad
A couple accused of defrauding multiple people of over ₹2.11 crore through bogus investment and job placement schemes was arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Cyberabad police. The arrested individuals, identified as Panem Ujwala and Mahesh Panem, both natives of Kandukur in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, were taken into custody on July 2. Ujwala was apprehended in Kandukur, while Mahesh was nabbed in Bengaluru. The two had previously lived in KPHB, Hyderabad. According to the police, the couple operated under the guise of running several businesses, including a real estate firm named M/s Christ Properties (OPC) Pvt Ltd, and lured victims, primarily retired employees, with promises of monthly returns of 2% on their investments. Mahesh Panem was the director of the firm, while Ujwala was listed as the nominee. Apart from the real estate venture, the accused also claimed to own an Agarwood farmland business and allegedly offered backdoor job placements through another entity, M/s Christ Global Technologies Pvt Ltd. In total, they are said to have collected ₹2.11 crore from at least five known victims, providing them with promissory notes, cheques, and MoUs as collateral. The initial monthly returns were paid for a brief period, after which the couple allegedly shut down their offices and absconded. The accused are also linked to other firms, including M/s Shine Solutions and Western Acqua, and are involved in at least five additional cases registered at police stations in Bachupally, Kollur, Chandanagar, and Madhapur. The arrests follow a case registered on June 25 under charges of cheating, criminal breach of trust, and criminal conspiracy, along with relevant provisions of the Telangana Protection of Depositors of Financial Establishments (TSPDFE) Act.
