Final 2025 USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll unveiled: Was Alabama ranked?

USA Today23-06-2025
For the sixth straight college baseball season, an SEC team took home the Men's College World Series trophy in Omaha on Sunday.
The LSU Tigers defeated Coastal Carolina, 5-3, in the CWS Finals at Charles Schwab Field to win their second national championship in three years under coach Jay Johnson, and their eighth overall title in school history.
LSU finished the year 53-15 overall and were the unanimous No. 1 in the final USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, released Monday.
Alabama had a lot to be proud of in 2025. With a talented roster led by shortstop Justin Lebron, coach Rob Vaughn guided the Crimson Tide to their first 40-win regular season since 2002.
But it was an all-too-familiar ending for Alabama in the NCAA Tournament. The Crimson Tide dropped both games in the Hattiesburg Regional -- to the Miami Hurricanes and host Southern Miss -- as the program's College World Series drought reached 26 years.
Alabama, which climbed to as high as No. 8 in the Coaches Poll during the regular season on March 31 after taking two of three from Oklahoma in a top 10 series, entered the tournament ranked No. 20. The Crimson Tide were unranked in the final Coaches Poll Monday. They received the second most votes for top 25 consideration with 73, behind Florida with 85 votes.
Alabama also finished unranked in the final coaches poll in 2024. In 2023, the Crimson Tide were ranked No. 17 in the final coaches poll after reaching the Winston-Salem Super Regional against Wake Forest. Alabama was unranked in the preseason poll this year, released back on Feb. 3.
Eight SEC teams placed in the final top 25, led by LSU. The Tigers won an elimination game over Little Rock in the Baton Regional Regional, then breezed through the rest of the tournament. They swept West Virginia in a Super Regional and went 5-0 in Omaha, rallying for a 6-5 come-from-behind victory over rival Arkansas to clinch a berth in the CWS Finals.
The eight SEC teams ranked in the final top 25 were the most by any conference. Here's a look at the full top 25 Coaches Poll rankings.

Everything Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko said during Coach's Night in San Antonio

For his sixth stop on the Coach's Night tour, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko previewed the upcoming season for the Aggies at the San Antonio A&M Club on Monday night. Elko's appearance at Coach's Night marked the first time behind the podium for the second-year head coach since the Southeastern Conference's media days last week. The Aggies are set to kick off the 2025 campaign against UTSA on Saturday, Aug. 30, at Kyle Field. With a new season of college football in Bryan-College Station, Texas, set to begin in just 39 days, "talking season" is nearing the end. When it comes to football in the SEC, the talking never stops, however. Heading into his second season leading the Aggies, that testament is something Elko has come to learn. As he continues to travel around the state to speak in front of Texas A&M alumni, the spirit and passion from the Aggie faithful are unlike anything Elko has ever seen. Here is everything Elko had to say at Coach's Night in front of the San Antonio A&M Club on Monday, according to TexAgs: Elko credits passionate display from A&M alumni "I want to say thank you to you all. Every time I go to these Coach's Nights, I'm blown away by the Aggie Spirit. I've been at a lot of universities, and there is nothing like this." Elko praises support from fans at Kyle Field "Last year we averaged over 102,000 people at our home games. We were 101% filled in Kyle Field. That number is larger than any other SEC stadium. We have support at an unbelivable level, and now we'll build the program to match it." Elko talks team's willingness to serve community "We've become extremely active in the Bryan-College Station area to give back with the Big Event and with schools. That's really important for young people to give back to keep them grounded, humble and away from entitlement." Elko expresses excitement about Aggie retention "Look at who goes in and who goes out of a program. We've been able to keep so many key players. We were able to retain about 99% of the players we wanted to return to our program, so we're really excited about that." Elko speaks on Marcel Reed's freshman season "Now he understands what it's like to be QB1 in the SEC. What he had to go through last year is not how you'd write the script for a first-time starter bring in and out. What gets lost is the growth he had last year." Elko on Aggie RB room "We returned all of our ball-carriers. Le'Veon Moss will be ready to go. We're excited to have Rueben Owens back. We're glad we got Amari Daniels back. E.J. Smith dealt with a lot of injuries last year, but he's healthy now." Elko excited about offensive line return "It's great to bring back all seven of our top offensive linemen. The last time we were this old at this position, we ended our season playing in the Orange Bowl. It's a really strong starting point to have a group like that." Elko talks WR reform "We had to reform the wide receiver position. Kevin Concepcion has been everything we hoped he could be. He's elevated the level of the entire wide receiver room. Mario Craver continues to develop. We're excited about the development of Ashton Bethel-Roman and Terry Bussey." Elko's defensive standard at A&M "It is not lost on me the standard we have for defense at Texas A&M. Getting Will Lee III back to anchor the corner position was huge. We believe we've elevated the safety position. Taurean York is the rock of that defense." Elko on filling gaps from departing players "We have had more NFL Draft picks on the defensive line since I got here in 2018 than any other team in the SEC. We're comfortable replacing great players. DJ Hicks, Albert Regis, Rylan Kennedy and Cashius Howell will step up." Elko talks program's future "We have 15 starters back. We have all of our specialists back. We're excited about where this program is going. We have to build a program you are all proud of. Let's be proud of who we are and where we're going." Elko dismisses Bussey playing both ways "He will not. His story has to start at wide receiver. That's not to take away of what he can do or that he won't ever be a two-way player, but we need him to impact the game on offense." Elko says Shemar Stewart will not return "Absolutely not. Some people live in this fairytale land of social media where you can create false narratives. I see him every day in our weight room, but he's a Cincinnati Bengal." Elko describes the most difficult challenge in football "The biggest puzzle of modern college football is maintaining chemistry and culture in an era where money has become involved in it. Who you bring into your program is crticial. We have to be intentional about how we bring this team together." Elko praises Regis "It's really exciting to have a player as talented as Albert Regis. He's a grown man. He's a great leader and a phenomenal player. Anchors like that matter." Elko on putting more players in the NFL "We have to have more NFL players across the board. If you look at teams that win the SEC, they're getting 20 players drafted over a two-year period. We will comfortably have 10 kids get their name called at the end of this season." Elko stresses importance of protecting Reed "I'm going to knock on wood one more time. Obviously that's something that has to change. It's not lost on us that keeping our quarterback protected and healthy is a critical piece of our success." What are the 10 Biggest College Football Rivalries of All Time?

Rivalries, both in-conference and out-of-conference, are among the best elements of college football. More often than not, the schedule is devised so that teams play their No. 1 historical opponent in the last week of the regular season. These rivalries include recruiting battles, amazing late-game finishes and some of the best matchups in all of sports; there are too many of them to count. Here are the 10 biggest college football rivalries of all time, according to FOX Sports Research. If you lose this game, don't expect to be greeted well by the locals for the next 365 days. A two-hour drive separating the two schools who compete in the yearly "Egg Bowl," Ole Miss and Mississippi State make for the rivalry in the state of Mississippi. The first game in the rivalry's history was Nov. 24, 1932, with Ole Miss getting a 13-0 victory. And, overall, the Rebels have the upper hand in the all-time series, boasting a 57-30-4 record. Of late, this game has usually been played on Thanksgiving Night or on Black Friday. Last year, Texas officially joined the SEC, allowing it to play in-state rival Texas A&M for the first time in 13 years, with the Longhorns getting a 17-7 win on the road at College Station. This matchup was traditionally played at the end of the regular season when the two schools were each in the Big 12. Texas A&M won the first meeting between the two teams on Nov. 19, 1915, 13-0. The Longhorns have historically gotten the better of the Aggies, however, boasting a 77-37-5 all-time record. With the two schools back in the same conference, expect heated recruiting battles and anticipated Saturday night matchups in November. From 1922-2010, Utah and BYU were each in the same conference before the Utes joined the Pac-12 and the Cougars became an independent for the 2011 season. As part of the historic conference realignment, the two schools each joined the Big 12 in 2024, allowing two schools separated by one hour to be arch rivals once again — and not just face off once in a while. BYU has won each of the last two matchups against Utah in "The Holy War," but the former has a 62-36-4 all-time record against the former. Much like the aforementioned Texas rivalry, expect the inner-Utah battle to spice up in the coming years. Two of the most historic programs in college football are in neighboring states and play each other every year at a neutral site in Jacksonville. Granted, Gainesville (Florida) is much closer to Jacksonville than Athens (Georgia). The Bulldogs have had the Gators number of late, winning seven of the last eight matchups and owning a 56-44-2 record in the all-time series. But that doesn't mean the Gators haven't had their share of success over the Bulldogs. For instance, Florida got the better of Georgia in the Tim Tebow era (2006-09) and won 18 of 21 over Georgia from 1990-2010. An arduous, seven-to-eight-hour drive separates Florida State from Miami, but it's still an in-state rivalry, nevertheless — and a tightly contested one, with the Hurricanes having a slim, 36-33 record against the Seminoles. The ACC teams first squared off on Oct. 5, 1951, with Miami getting the first of five consecutive wins over Florida State and eight of nine victories. Later, the Seminoles returned the favor with a seven-game winning streak over the Hurricanes, and it has continued to be a rivalry of streaks. Miami won the 2024 meeting, but Florida State had won the previous three. It's a matchup of one team that can see the Pacific Ocean and one team that pays homage to Rudy. Put them in a blender, and it makes for one of the best rivalries in collegiate sports and two historic venues: LA Memorial Coliseum and Notre Dame Stadium. Whether it be Matt Leinart's goal-line sneak to get USC a win in South Bend in 2005 or Notre Dame putting together a game-winning touchdown drive in the final minutes of a 2010 game in L.A., this matchup has continually delivered. Of late, the Fighting Irish have had their way with the Trojans, winning six of the last seven meetings and having a combined 52-37-5 record in the series. "America's Game" is not only a great football game but the most meaningful one of them all, as the two service academies play at a neutral site every December in the all-important Army-Navy game. Another matchup that has been one of streaks, the Midshipmen have a 63-55-7 record against the Black Knights. The first-ever matchup was in 1890, with Navy getting a 24-0 win. After Navy won 14 consecutive games over Army from 2002-15, the latter changed the tide in 2016 and has won six of the last nine contests. Two years ago (2023), the game was literally decided by inches, as Army kept Navy out of the end zone on a quarterback sneak at the 2-yard line with one second remaining. This matchup is a battle up front from start to finish. "The Red River Showdown" is fierce, a great environment (the game is played at a neutral site in Dallas) and makes for an intense scuffle. The first-ever meeting between Texas and Oklahoma was a mere one-point Sooner victory in 1950. In 2020, the two teams played into a fourth overtime, with the Sooners escaping with the victory. The Longhorns have won two of the last three games, with those wins combining for a whopping 83-3 score, but the Sooners have the narrow lead in the all-time series, 37-31-3. Previously bitter Big 12 rivals, the two schools each joined the SEC in 2024, with their yearly game at Cotton Bowl Stadium remaining intact. Every year, the state of Alabama is on the line in the "Iron Bowl," which has delivered some of the most memorable moments in college football. In 2013, Alabama attempted a would-be, game-winning 58-yard field goal as time expired in the fourth quarter, but Cody Parkey's kick missed. Then, Chris Davis ran the missed kick back 100 yards for a walk-off touchdown in arguably the most chilling finish in the history of the sport. Recently, Alabama pulled off a pair of miracle wins against Auburn, including a 97-yard touchdown drive with under two minutes to play and no timeouts to force overtime and later win in 2021. In 2023, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe completed a go-ahead and eventual game-winning, 31-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal to Isaiah Bond with 32 seconds remaining in the game. The Crimson Tide have won the last five games and are 51-37-1 in the all-time series. These two programs literally hate each other. It's called "The Game" for a reason, as Michigan and Ohio State make for a timeless college football rivalry and the best in the Big Ten Conference. Ohio State lost or tied each of its first 14 games against Michigan, including an 86-0 defeat in 1902. Following the 14th all-time meeting, this has been a dead heat of a rivalry. Whether it be Desmond Howard's Heisman pose, Curtis Samuel's overtime walk-off touchdown for Ohio State in 2016 or Michigan trying to plant a flag on Ohio Stadium after its 2024 upset victory, there are countless iconic moments, great finishes and entertainment implanted in this Rustbelt hatred. Michigan is 62-51-6 in the all-time series and has won each of the last four matchups, though, Ohio State won the previous eight games and 15 of 16 beforehand. Check out all of our Daily Rankers. Hugh Freeze Opens Up About Mounting Pressure Before Crucial Season

Hugh Freeze Opens Up About Mounting Pressure Before Crucial Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 college football season could be crucial for many prominent coaches at major universities. If these coaches are unable to secure wins this season, they may find themselves looking for new jobs after the season ends. This is the situation for Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze. The Tigers are on a four-season losing streak, with two of those seasons occurring under Freeze's leadership. This type of losing streak hasn't happened at Auburn in over 70 years. The Tigers also haven't won more than six games since the 2019 season. Freeze appeared on the podcast "See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack," where he discussed the pressure he faces heading into the upcoming season. "I don't even have a seat at the table to write the story," Freeze said. "I don't even have a pen to write the story. It's not mine to write. I approach it like that. I don't have the pressure or any of that. At the same time, I'm a realist, and Auburn's a place that has to win. I believe we're going to. I think we finally have enough depth and talent." Freeze has a record of 11-14 in his two seasons at Auburn. However, he has a proven ability to win, particularly in the SEC. During his five seasons as head coach of the Ole Miss Rebels, he achieved a record of 39-25. Freeze understands that this is a crucial year for him to demonstrate that he deserves to remain as coach. If he is dismissed after the season, he will be entitled to 75 percent of the remaining value of his contract, with no offsets. He signed a six-year deal before the 2023 season, which began at $6.5 million and increases by $250,000 each year. This season, he is slated to earn $7 million, which would total almost $17 million by the end of the 2025 season. 247Sports reports that there is reason for optimism regarding the Tigers, who have secured the No. 8 recruiting class as well as the No. 8 transfer portal class. Among their notable additions from the transfer portal are quarterback Jackson Arnold and wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. In his first season as the starting quarterback at Oklahoma, Arnold passed for 1,421 yards, throwing 12 touchdowns and only three interceptions across 10 games. It is important to note that he was benched midseason after a performance that included turnovers. Singleton Jr. had an impressive season at Georgia Tech, accumulating 754 yards and scoring three touchdowns. He was also ranked among the top five players in the transfer portal. Another positive aspect for Freeze is that, despite his seasons not going as well as hoped, ESPN's Paul Finebaum does not see any increasing pressure from Auburn's athletic department. He recently stated that he does not believe Freeze is in a critical situation. Finebaum noted that Freeze is well-liked by the Auburn community and has support where it really matters. However, he described Freeze's first two seasons as quite underwhelming. Auburn opens the season on Aug. 29 at 8:00 p.m. ET, facing the Baylor Bears on the story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 15, 2025, where it first appeared.
