Gunjiz-Sting: Mentor-protégé team behind the ‘Toruk Makto' airshow that wowed LIMA'25 visitors

The Sun22-05-2025
LANGKAWI: The performance that stole the show at the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA'25) yesterday may have just lasted for 12 minutes, but for the pilots of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Su-30MKM dubbed 'Toruk Makto', it could be considered a lifetime in the making.
Visitors were wowed not only by the aerobatic display of airmanship of the fighter, decked in the new Jalur Gemilang livery, but the fact that Chief of Air Force Gen Tan Sri Mohd Asghar Khan Goriman Khan, known by his pilot callsign 'Gunjiz', was the man behind the joystick.
What many may not know is that both Mohd Asghar Khan and his co-pilot, RMAF Col Mohd Norazan Othman have shared more than just that amazing 12 minutes together in the cockpit, as both men have been a mentor-protege team, stretching back to the days when they served together in the RMAF's MiG-29N squadron.
'When I was informed that I would be flying with my former trainer in the airshow in LIMA' 25, obviously I was very excited and proud to be able to fly with him.
'We took three months to undergo the aerobatic training and did our very best to choreograph the aerobatic stunts to perform at the 17th edition of LIMA,' Mohd Norazan, who's callsign is 'Sting', told reporters in an interview here today after flying Toruk Makto with his mentor again at LIMA'25 today.
Mohd Norazan, who serves as the commander of Gong Kedak Air Base, has flown Su-30MKMs since 2008 and is a veteran performer at LIMA, having been involved in six editions. Obviously, LIMA'25 now occupies a deeper and special place in his heart.
He also took the time to express his gratitude to the RMAF for entrusting him with flying the Su030MKM bearing the new livery.
According to the RMAF official website, Mohd Norazan was appointed as Gong Kedak Air Base commander on Aug 20, 2024. The base is the main base for the RMAF's Su-30MKM aircraft.2024.
Incidentally, 'Gunjiz' and 'Sting's scintillating performance yesterday turned out to be also historic, as Mohd Asghar Khan became the first Chief of Air Force to fly an aircraft in a LIMA airshow since it started in 1991.

Game On: PUMA Drops Second Squid Game Collab For Season 3 – & It's Deadly Stylish!

Get into position, peeps, because PUMA has introduced its second collection inspired by Netflix's Squid Game, the secret, high-stakes contest at the heart of the award-winning series. Inspired by the exhilarating moments, lore, as well as the ruthless competition of Squid Game, this new collaborative range centres around the third season, featuring a fresh lineup of games including Jump Rope, Hide and Seek, and of course, the final Squid Game. For their second collection, PUMA and Squid Game bring these new games to life through a range of limited-edition apparel, footwear, and accessories. PUMA's legacy of sportswear is interpreted through a streetwear lens, with details and accents inspired by Squid Game. The collection's Relaxed Football Jersey and Relaxed Shorts feature an abstract all-over print, with a PUMA x Squid Game logo lockup and geometric graphics nodding to the show's ominous masked henchmen. The accompanying Graphic T-Shirt channels the infamous green tracksuits worn by Squid Game contestants, featuring a specially designed graphic on the chest. Accessories continue the narrative, as the collaborative Bucket Hat also utilises the show's signature green with graphic accents, while the Waist Bag features a hangtag of Chul-su, a doll-like figurine who appears in season three. For footwear, PUMA reworks the low-profile Palermo and the Easy Rider, each arriving with rich details and logo touches on the tongue to acknowledge elements from the show. The Easy Rider comes with an asymmetrical red-green design and a special Chul-su hangtag, while the Palermo is outfitted with frenzied contrast stitching across the upper, as well as distinctive lace jewels, and a key-shaped hangtag. The PUMA x Squid Game collection is now available, ranging in price from RM199 – RM529 at PUMA stores, and at selected PUMA stockists, including FootLocker and SSS.

'Elio' review: A true shooting star in Pixar's galaxy

Directors: Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina Voice cast: Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly, Brandon Moon, Brad Garrett, and Jameela Jamil. The new Pixar animated film Elio takes up a question famously posed by astrophysicist Carl Sagan: "are we alone?" It's in reference to the search for extraterrestrial life, but the idea, according to Sagan, is "the deepest of human concerns." It's a question both existential and intimate; galactic and earthbound. It dictates our day-to-day experience and our wildest dreams, motivating our every action and reaction. For our hero, Elio (Yonas Kibreab), the worry that he might be entirely alone on Earth is what spurs his desire to look for community elsewhere – in the stars. Elio starts to wonder about this when he wanders away from his new guardian, his aunt Olga (Zoe Saldana) at her job. She happens to be a major in the Air Force, working at a base monitoring orbital space debris, and Elio finds an exhibit about the space program Voyager, launched in 1977 to explore space and collect data. Recently orphaned and feeling so alone, the idea that lifeforms in outer space might be out there is a lifeline for misfit Elio. He becomes obsessed with aliens and spends his days and nights trying to make contact, begging to be abducted. Be careful what you wish for, Elio. Does your aunt know you're using her strainer as a hat, Elio? After causing mischief and mayhem in his quest for contact, he manages to send a message to outer space, and is swiftly picked up from sleepaway camp by a delegation from the Communiverse, a sort of United Nations of aliens. It's a beautiful, utopian, but ultimately isolationist, community, and while they welcome Elio as Earth's ambassador, he becomes mixed up in matters of intergalactic diplomacy, negotiating with a warlike alien group and their leader, Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett), while befriending young princeling Glordon (Remy Edgerly). Though the writing and directing team of Adrian Molina, Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi (along with writers Julia Cho, Mark Hammer and Mike Jones) spin a wildly imaginative and action-packed tale of celestial interaction that forever changes Elio's life and outlook, at the heart of the matter, this is a story of family, friendship and realising that you're never really alone. When you wish upon an alien planet.... Elio comes to understand that he never gave his relationships on Earth a chance before setting his sights on the skies — a notion that resonates deeply as the billionaires on this planet are giving up on this one while looking for other places in the galaxy to colonize. Maybe give Earth a chance. Elio is a surprisingly succinct film to be packed with so many ideas, both big and small, and it's stuffed to the gills with stunningly cinematic visuals, both on Earth and in the gorgeous Communiverse. At the heart is Elio's relationship with his aunt, but his friendship with the adorable Glordon is the crown jewel of the film, with much of the humour coming from the juxtaposition of Glordon's appearance (sea-slug body, many rows of razor sharp teeth) and his personality (adorable, snuggly, doesn't want to follow in his father's warmongering footsteps). Both Glordon and Elio have to rectify their relationships with their parental figures, and in running away, their guardians realise that they need to show their own soft sides in order to connect with their kids, to show them that it's OK to be vulnerable and emotional, and to accept these young ones for who they are — profoundly human concepts, even when expressed by fantastical extraterrestrials. This gem of a film manages to draw together our questions about the universe and ourselves into one single adventure story that hits every emotional beat. It's what Pixar does best, and Elio is another knockout, a quiet but determined shooting star that earns its place in the galaxy. – Tribune News Service
