Delhi cabinet approves annual tribute to Guru Tegh Bahadur
The event will feature a light and sound show, Kirtan Darbar, panel discussions, a paintings exhibition, archival displays and multilingual translations of the Guru's teachings every year.
The cabinet also cleared a proposal for a Miyawaki forest being developed in Jainpur, Delhi, to be dedicated to Guru Tegh Bahadur. Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said: "Delhi is honouring Sikh heritage with pride and permanence. I thank CM Rekha Gupta and my cabinet colleagues for approving this historic tribute."

According to the plan, there will be a two-day celebration in Nov at Lal Qila, Chandni Chowk — the very site where Guru Sahib attained martyrdom while upholding the right to religious freedom, said the govt in a statement.
Sirsa said: "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently brought Sikh history, sacrifice and valour to the forefront on the national and global stage. Under the effective guidance of CM Gupta, this celebration is a historic recognition of Delhi's deep-rooted connection with Sikhism.
"
He mentioned that Guru Tegh Bahadur's martyrdom is not just a part of Sikh history. It is a message of freedom, tolerance and justice for all of humanity.
He also noted that the Miyawaki forest will be dedicated to Guru Tegh Bahadur as a living tribute to his values, sacrifice and the Sikh community's ongoing commitment to nature and service, Sirsa added.
"The two-day event at Lal Qila will be historic. Not only will Delhi pay tribute at the very site of Guru Sahib's martyrdom, but we will also make his teachings accessible to every citizen through culture, art and education.
Public readings and translations of his bani will help connect people from all backgrounds to his universal message," Sirsa said.
Govt also announced that Delhi University has introduced an undergraduate course titled "Sikh Martyrdom in Indian History". This move is seen as a significant academic step in recognising the Sikh community's role in defending justice, freedom and human dignity.
Earlier in June, Sirsa chaired a meeting with senior Sikh leaders and members of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) to seek ideas for the martyrdom day commemoration.
The demand for an academic course on Sikh history emerged during that consultation. "During the June meeting, several important ideas were shared, including the need for a university-level course to institutionalise the teachings of Sikh Gurus. Today, I am proud to share that Delhi University's academic council has adopted that very vision. This is the strength of inclusive governance," Sirsa said.
Additionally, Delhi govt will organise exhibitions of paintings, archival documents, and special programmes throughout the year in schools, colleges, and community spaces. Competitions, lectures, and outreach initiatives will be conducted to educate the youth about Guru Tegh Bahadur's legacy and strengthen their connection with Delhi's rich historical and cultural roots, he said.

Mamdani's wedding bash in Uganda Zohran Mamdani, the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and renowned Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani, celebrated his wedding with Rama Duwaji, 27, at a lavish compound owned by his family in Uganda, as per a New York Post report. The private compound is located in the posh Buziga Hill area outside the capital city of Kampala. The neighbourhood is home to some of Uganda's richest, including billionaire businessman Godfrey Kirumira. Mamdani was born in Uganda and spent the first few years of his life there before moving to the US at the age of seven. The Queens politician returned to his birthplace to mark his love for his wife. Duwaji and Mamdani, who met on the dating app Hinge, had eloped in February. The couple hosted wedding celebrations at the compound guarded by masked security guards, with guests partying until midnight last week, reported New York Post. Mamdani's family home is secluded and spread over two acres of lush gardens, surrounded by trees, with at least three security gates. 'Outside the Mamdani house were more than 20 special forces command unit guards, some in masks, and there was a phone-jamming system set up — and all for the strictly invite-only Mamdani event,' the witness added. Guests were served fruit juices and they danced to music from a local DJ last Thursday (July 24). As per a witness, Mamdani is believed to have addressed guests later that night, with the party ending after midnight. 'Then on Friday, inside the compound, there were military style tents being taken down when the party had finished,' they added. 'Then what looked like Mamdani personal security guards took over at the gates.' Mamdani had previously confirmed his trip to Uganda on his Instagram, saying he would stay there until the end of the month. Why Mamdani's wedding bash is facing flak Zohran Mamdani, who says he wants to raise taxes on the top one per cent of New Yorkers, is facing backlash over his reported extravagant wedding festivities. 'Because of the culture here, it was insensitive to have a wedding celebration in the same week as mourning – or 'Okukungubaga' – as it's called here,' another told The Post. 'He has not even been buried, and we have his friends coming to give last words and to mourn before the burial next week, yet Mamdani is celebrating his wedding for three days,' the source added. ‘Cannot switch off economy': Indian envoy hits back at West's pressure on oil imports from Russia
India's High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, hit back at the West's pressure on New Delhi to halt oil imports from Russia, emphasising that the country cannot simply 'switch off its economy' due to geopolitical tensions. In an interview with Times Radio recently, he further pointed out the inconsistency in the West's stance, highlighting that several European partners continue to buy rare earth and other energy products from the same countries that they refuse to let India buy from. 'Don't you think that that seems a little odd?' Doraiswami said. When questioned about India's close ties with Russia and President Vladimir Putin, he said that New Delhi's relationship with Moscow is built on various metrics. 'One of these is our long-standing security relationship that goes back to an era in which some of our Western partners wouldn't sell us weapons but would sell them to countries in our neighbourhood that use them only to attack us,' the Indian envoy said. He further termed New Delhi's ties with Moscow an 'energy relationship', which he said was the outcome of 'everybody else buying energy from sources that we used to buy from earlier'. 'So we've been displaced out of the energy market largely, and the costs have gone up. We are the third-largest consumer of energy in the world. We import over 80% of our product. What would you have us do? Switch off our economy,' Doraiswami said. 'We also see around us relationships that other countries maintain for their own convenience with countries that are a source of difficulty for us. Do we ask you to come up with a little test of loyalty?' he said. Affirming India's stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Indian envoy said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly asserted that this was not an era of war and that New Delhi is 'very keen' for the conflict to stop. 'He's made that point repeatedly, including with the president of Russia and with the president of Ukraine (Volodymyr Zelensky),' he said. 'We are very keen for this terrible conflict to stop, as we are keen for conflicts across the world to stop,' Mr Doraiswami added. India traditionally relied on the Middle East for its oil supplies. However, following Western sanctions against Moscow due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the country began offering oil at discounted prices to attract new buyers.

Durand Cup 2025: Kokrajhar welcomes football's grand return with a spectacular opening ceremony
The 134th Durand Cup reached Kokrajhar on July 27, 2025, with the SAI Stadium playing host to the prestigious century-old tournament for the third successive year. The city welcomed the event with a vibrant celebration ahead of the first Group D clash between Assam's Morning Star FC and ITBP FT. The grand opening ceremony was graced by Pramod Boro, Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) as Chief Guest, and Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command and Patron of the Durand Cup Organising Committee (DCOC), along with other dignitaries. Also present were Dasho Dr. Lotay Tshering, former Prime Minister of Bhutan and Guest of Honour, and Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri . The political leadership of Assam and Bodoland was represented by Urkhao Gwra Brahma, Minister for Handloom, Textile and Sericulture, Soil Conservation and Welfare of Bodoland Department; Rwngwra Narzary, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha; and Shri Joyanta Basumatary, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha. ' Celebrations began three hours before kick-off, building a festive buzz with a DJ set, a Hot Air Balloon display, and a rich mix of performances—from the Pipe Band and Maj. Yogesh Adhikari to a vibrant Punjabi Bhangra dance. A Dog Show, a unique Pipe and Jazz band fusion, and the regimental song Badluram ka Badan by Major M.T. Prokto added further colour to the festivities. Joi Baruah and his band entertained fans before and during halftime, while a recorded message by the Hon'ble President of India unveiling the Durand Cup trophies in Delhi (on July 4) was screened during the felicitation of dignitaries. The cultural richness of Assam was on full display with Bagurumba, Bihu, Bardwi Sikhla and Dahal Thungri performances. In parallel, the crowd witnessed aeromodelling stunts and an exhilarating Paramotor fly-past by the 10 PARA Special Forces. Artist Geeta Shri energised the crowd with a rendition of Waka Waka , followed by a thrilling Khukri performance by the Gorkha regiment. The highlight of the evening came with a fly-past by Sukhoi 30 MKI fighter jets of the Indian Air Force, leaving the stadium in awe. Chenda Drummers with Kalaripayattu (Kerala's martial art) and Chau dancers from West Bengal brought the cultural segment to a powerful close.
