ICAI urges its 14 lakh members and students to stand with armed forces, nation

Indian Express10-05-2025
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has urged its 14 lakh members and students to extend support to the Armed Forces and the Nation amid the confrontation with Pakistan. With a widespread presence across nearly 17,000 pin codes in India and 13 branches near the India-Pakistan border, ICAI has called for volunteers among its fraternity offering to aid the relief efforts. The body said it is uniquely positioned to make a significant impact in humanitarian efforts.

The statement by the body said that they can facilitate evacuations, set up shelter camps for displaced civilians, arrange for ambulance services, oxygen cylinders and distribute essential medicines.
They can also organise blood donation camps and other critical aid services, it added.
'In addition, the ICAI fraternity is urged to remain vigilant, reporting any suspicious or anti-national activities and stand prepared to support national security during this critical time,' it added.
Lauding heroic efforts of the Indian Armed Forces, CA Charanjot Singh Nanda, the president of ICAI, emphasized that over 14 lakh financial soldiers of ICAI are committed not just in words but also in meaningful action.
During his address to the CA Fraternity, he said, 'ICAI salutes the courage and determination of our soldiers. We share immense pride in their valour in avenging the tragic loss of 26 innocent lives in the Pahalgam terror attack. Operation 'SINDOOR' is a powerful message from a New Bharat, one that asserts there will be no compromise when it comes to protecting India's sovereignty.'
'ICAI has always lived by the principle of 'Nation First'. In every storm that has shaken our country, we have stood strong as a pillar of support to our motherland,' he added.
He further urged all ICAI members and students to rise to the occasion, remain alert and uphold the highest ideals of service by protecting the integrity and security of the nation.
'Let us come together in this critical hour. Let the CA fraternity lead by example, proving that we are not only financial stewards but also pillars of strength, compassion and resilience for our nation,' he said.
CA. Prasanna Kumar D, vice-president of ICAI, said 'We are financial soldiers of our motherland. In every hour of national need, we stand ready to serve our country.'
ICAI has a legacy of contributing to national causes and supporting citizens during times of crisis. During the 1971 Indo-Pak War, ICAI members provided pro-bono services to the families of martyrs, and in the Covid-19 pandemic, ICAI extended support to grieving families, offered scholarships to students who lost parents and waived fees so the dreams could continue.
'Members of the Institute also organized food drives, blood and plasma donation camps and vaccination camps not only for our members but public at large,' the statement said.
ICAI's special COVID Task Forces delivered critical aid, including oxygen cylinders and concentrators, arranging for hospital beds, medicines, ambulances and meals. The statement said that several branches also donated vital supplies to hospitals, strengthening local healthcare infrastructure when it was needed most.
'As a trusted partner in nation-building, ICAI remains committed to support the Armed Forces, the Prime Minister and the citizens of India,' the release said.
'The Institute continues to inspire financial professionals to rise beyond the profession and lead with patriotism, compassion and unwavering duty to the nation,' it added.

US student visas for Indians lowest since Covid in March-May

The US student visa season is off to a slow start for Indians, with the number of F-1 visas issued from March to May falling to the lowest level for these months since the pandemic, recording a 27% drop compared to the corresponding period last year, according to the latest available data from the US State Department. The months from March to July typically mark a busy visa season for students preparing to begin their studies in the Fall semester (August/ September). From March to May this year, Indian students were issued 9,906 F-1 (academic) visas even lower than the corresponding period in 2022 (10,894), when international travel had just resumed post-Covid (see chart). A total of 14,987 F-1 visas were issued in these months in 2023, and 13,478 in 2024. The dip comes amid the Trump administration's crackdown on international students, including visa revocations for several students — some of them Indian — linked to pro-Palestine protests or interactions with law enforcement, as well as a two-week pause (May 27 to June 18) on fresh applications to implement stricter vetting of applicants' social media activity. The visa revocations have triggered multiple lawsuits, even as American universities face funding cuts and growing scrutiny of international enrolments. In May, Politico reported that the Trump administration had directed US embassies and consular sections to halt the scheduling of new interviews for student visa applicants, as it considered making social media vetting mandatory for prospective foreign students. By June, the US Embassy in New Delhi had advised applicants for F, M, and J category visas to make their social media accounts public to facilitate the screening process. (The F-1 visa is for academic studies, the M category for vocational or non-academic programmes, and the J visa for exchange programmes that include study or research.) These months lead up to the start of the academic year in US universities, which typically begin in August or September. This year's slow start follows an overall decline in student visa issuances in 2024 — a trend now compounded by the Trump administration's hardening stance on international enrolments. As reported by The Indian Express in December last year, after an initial post-pandemic surge, student visa approvals for Indian nationals fell sharply in 2024. From January to September 2024, only 64,008 F-1 visas were issued to Indian students – down from 1.03 lakh during the same period in 2023 and 93,181 in 2022. Still, the overall growth in the number of Indian students in the US over the past few years has been striking. In the 2023–24 academic year, Indians overtook Chinese students to become the largest group of international students in the country, according to Open Doors 2024 data. Asked about the reason behind the drop in visa issuances this year, if student visa applications have decreased or rejections seen an uptick, and whether student visa applicant interviews are currently being scheduled, a US Embassy spokesperson said: 'The adjudication of visa applications is critically important to the national security and public safety of the US. We encourage applicants to apply as early as they can and to anticipate additional processing time for these visa categories. Our overseas posts have resumed scheduling F non-immigrant visa applications. Applicants should check the relevant embassy or consulate website for appointment availability.' 'Consular sections constantly adjust their schedules to allow for sufficient time to fully vet the cases to ensure our visa operations around the world meet the highest standards. We're working every day to fully vet visa applicants to ensure they do not intend to harm America or our interests, and that they credibly establish their eligibility for the visa sought, including that they intend to engage in activities consistent with the terms of their admission,' the Embassy spokesperson said.

CM and DCM have forgotten state in their fight for power, says Bommai

Hubballi: Chief minister and deputy chief minister have forgotten the people and the state in their tug-of-war for the CM's chair, said Haveri MP . On Tuesday, Bommai told reporters that they have been spending all their time protecting their positions. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "The poor and farmers are suffering immensely. On one hand, there are floods; on the other, heart attack cases are rising. Even though every department is in disarray, this govt behaves as if it's dead. The public is regretting bringing this govt to power and are now cursing it," he said. "The govt committed an unpardonable crime by owing around Rs 250 crore to the trucks supplying ration food. It completely failed in financial management. During the BJP govt's tenure, they allocated sufficient funds for many schemes. These people are just spreading lies. Even when Siddaramaiah was CM earlier, several bills were pending, which our govt cleared. During the Covid-19 period, under the leadership of Yediyurappa, they carried out development works without any financial hurdles. When I was the CM, we functioned efficiently with financial stability. This govt, on the other hand, has betrayed the people by failing financially," the former CM alleged. "Forget about giving 15kg of rice, they aren't even providing 10kg. They promised to give rice instead of cash, but are not providing that either. People are not getting food grains. The healthcare system is in disarray," he pressed.
