Advice to Muslim disaster victims on getting help

Kota Kinabalu: Victims of natural disasters such as fires and floods in Sabah are encouraged to report such incidents promptly to Sabah Islamic Religious Council (Muis) and Perbadanan Baitulmal to ensure timely assistance. Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin bin Mohd Arif, said Muis, through its Zakat division and Baitulmal, is prepared to extend aid to those affected especially through coordination with its local representatives throughout the State. He said the victims can also go to nearby Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) in their respective districts or head office. 'This is what we hope for – whenever tragedy strikes, inform us immediately. God willing, Muis through Zakat and Baitulmal, will provide the assistance. 'Across Sabah, whenever we receive reports from local areas about victims made homeless and house damaged because of fire and flood, Muis, Jheains and Baitulmal representatives including at its headquarters will take immediate action. We will do our utmost to ease the burden on the victims,' he said. Dr. Mohd Arifin who is in charge of Islamic religious affairs and authorities said this to reporters here on Thursday after handing over financial aid to 10 household heads who lost their two houses to fire at Kg Darau, few weeks ago. Each affected family received RM1,000 from Muis and RM300 from Baitulmal. Also present were Darau Gagasan Rakyat divisional head Datuk Razali Razi and Perbadanan Baitulmal Negeri Sabah (PBNS) Chairman Datuk Dr Omar Raisul As-Salam Syah bin Datuk Sulaiman Omar and its Chief Executive Officer Ismail bin Mohd Adnan, among others. To a question, Dr Mohd Arifin who is also in charge of education affairs in Sabah said Muis, through its Zakat and Fitrah Division (BZF), allocates approximately RM40 million annually to support education and provide disaster relief aid to the victims in the State. Out of the total, he said M25 million is channelled specifically into the Derma Siswa education aid program, with the remainder used for broader educational development, teachers, zakat aid, and other needs. This year, he said zakat collections are estimated to reach RM45 million and will be used for educational purposes and relief aid for natural disaster victims, among others. Malaysia slaps duties on steel imports from China, South Korea and Vietnam

(Reuters pic) PETALING JAYA: The government has imposed provisional anti-dumping duties ranging from 3.86% to 57.90% on certain iron and steel imports from China, South Korea and Vietnam. The investment, trade and industry ministry said the duties will take the form of bank guarantees, effective for up to 120 days starting July 7, pending a final determination by Nov 3. Advertisement This follows a preliminary investigation on Feb 6 into flat-rolled iron or non-alloy steel products coated with zinc using the hot-dip process, commonly known as galvanised steel coils or sheets. Local steelmaker CSC Steel Sdn Bhd had lodged a petition, claiming that imports from the three countries were being sold below their domestic market prices, causing losses to Malaysian producers. 'The government has found that there was sufficient evidence to continue with further investigation on the importation of the subject merchandise from China, South Korea and Vietnam at dumped prices. 'The provisional measure is necessary to prevent further injury to the domestic industry,' the ministry said in a statement today. Companies and exporters affected by the decision have until July 14 to submit feedback. A final decision will be made by Nov 3. Wooing the Kazakh tourists to Sabah

ASTANA: Kazakhstan is looking to enhance cooperation with Sabah in the areas of tourism, investment, and education following a recent working visit by a Malaysian business delegation. President of the Asean Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) Sabah Chapter Datuk Nordin Ening, said Kazakhstan aims to bring more of its citizens to Sabah, particularly to Kota Kinabalu and Semporna, while also promoting its own winter tourism experiences. Advertisement 'These include snow jet-skiing from October, cable car ride and other seasonal activities which may also appeal to Malaysian travellers,' he said. Nordin was part of a three-day working visit to Kazakhstan, organised by the Almaty Chamber of Entrepreneurs (Atameken), which concluded recently. He said existing direct flights between Almaty and Kuala Lumpur, which is currently operating four times a week, have played a role in increasing visitor arrivals, with AirAsia expected to add a fifth weekly flight by the end of this month. Malaysia's position as a hub for affordable medical tourism has also attracted interest from Kazakhstan, which Nordin said may benefit private hospitals and rehabilitation centres in Sabah. Beyond tourism, the delegation was also briefed on investment opportunities in several key sectors. One of the main projects involves a conveyor belt manufacturing plant led by Aytei Group to serve the agriculture, mining, and heavy industries. Kazakhstan is also opening its doors to partners in the processing of technogenic mineral waste (TMW), a legacy of the Soviet era. The country holds over five billion tonnes of mineral waste, including valuable metals such as copper, and is seeking foreign expertise to develop modern processing facilities. In the energy sector, the Tortai oil field in Atyrau region, which holds an estimated 82.1 million barrels in geological reserves, is open for foreign investment. Twenty-two wells have been drilled, with four currently in production. Kazakhstan is also planning a large-scale shift to electric vehicles (EVs), aiming for 80 per cent usage in major cities. Proton has signed an agreement to establish an EV assembly plant there. Nordin said discussions also covered potential cooperation in Islamic banking, fintech, and education, particularly student exchanges and English-medium programmes at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). 'ACCI Sabah will help facilitate business connections and follow-up visits between the two regions,' he said, adding that coordination from agencies such as Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti), Tourism Sabah, Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) and private sector players would be vital.
