Malaysia on edge as police hunt armed robbery suspect amid surge in shootings

As Malaysian police pursue a gunman accused of firing a weapon on a street in southern Johor state at the weekend, the country's sense of safety is being rattled by a wave of gun violence that has left five dead in recent weeks.
The
series of recent shootings has come as a shock to many in
Malaysia , where unlicensed possession of firearms carries extensive jail terms and mandatory whipping. In a number of cases, attackers have brazenly fired upon their targets in full public view.
The latest incident unfolded on Saturday evening in Seri Alam township, less than an hour's drive from the
Singapore border.
'The suspect entered the premises and pointed an object that resembled a pistol at a victim while demanding that they hand over cash,' Seri Alam police chief Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said in a statement.
'The suspect fired one shot outside the premises before escaping on a motorcycle.' No injuries were reported.
Police are investigating the case as an unlawful discharge of a firearm, an offence punishable by up to 40 years' imprisonment and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Colombian man guilty of murdering elderly UK couple, dumping body parts in suitcases

A Colombian national was convicted on Monday of murdering two men in London before taking parts of their dismembered bodies in suitcases to Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge. Yostin Andres Mosquera, 35, was visiting 62-year-old Albert Alfonso and 71-year-old Paul Longworth at the London flat they shared in July 2024 when he killed the pair and decapitated them, prosecutors said. Mosquera – who prosecutors said had engaged in extreme sexual acts with Alfonso – then put some parts of the couple's dismembered bodies in two suitcases and attempted to dispose of the bodies in Bristol, southwest England, before he was caught and charged. Prosecutor Deanna Heer told jurors at Woolwich Crown Court that Mosquera killed Longworth with a hammer, before stabbing Alfonso to death after the pair had sex – which was recorded in a video played several times to the jury. Mosquera said in his evidence that Alfonso – who he alleged had been abusive to him and had threatened his family – had killed Longworth before Mosquera killed Alfonso. He had pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder but admitted the manslaughter of Alfonso by reason of loss of control.

Hong Kong teen dies after being found unconscious in bedroom with ‘space oil' drug

A 17-year-old has died in a Hong Kong hospital after being found unconscious in his bedroom, where police also discovered the narcotic 'space oil', the Post has learned. A police source said on Monday that the teenager's mother had attempted to wake him at their home in Cheung Sha Wan at around 8.45am on Sunday. He was rushed to Caritas Medical Centre in Sham Shui Po, where he was declared dead at 9.49am on Sunday. A police spokesman said officers discovered multiple dangerous substances in the flat, including a vape device containing liquid etomidate, the main ingredient in the drug commonly known as 'space oil'. Cannabis and ketamine were also seized. The source said the 'space oil' was inside the bedroom where the teenager was found. There were no suspicious injuries on his body, but he had multiple self-inflicted wounds on his shoulders and forearms. The teenager did not leave the flat on Saturday. At around 5am the following morning, his father saw him using the bathroom and said he appeared normal. The father also reminded him to take his prescribed psychiatric medication, which he did before returning to his room.
