McInnes: ‘there is still more to come'

Derek McInnes admitted that games against clubs in other divisions can catch teams like Hearts out, but, once again the Tynecastle team's approach was good and the squad came through the Premier Sports Cup clash with Stirling Albion from Scottish League Two with a 4-0 win.
Three of the goals came inside the first 38 minutes, and the club's head coach told Hearts TV that coming away from home in a cup competition can be difficult.
Stirling Albion, he admitted, surprised the Tynecastle coaching team, coming in with a back four, something with McInnes said they have never done. Albion, he argued, are normally a back five, but the tactical move, he admitted, helped the visitors.
He said: 'It was a bit more straight forward in terms of two wingers, two strikers. We got a lot right in the first half, especially in the early periods. They made a wee change before half time and came out second half, bolstered the middle of the pitch, with a 5-3-1-1, and it meant us going round the houses a bit more. We needed to be a little sharper. We wanted to show that penetration.
'We won 4-0, that's 12 goals and one conceded (in the Premier Sports Cup), goalkeeper Zander Clark has not made a save and we would have taken that before the game but, equally, I still think there is more to come.'
McInnes said: 'We got one goal second half but we should really be showing a lot more authority in terms of creating chances. Not completely happy but happy with the approach of the team.'
There were, he said, good combinations, some involving Alan Forrest, Harry Milne and Alexandros Kyziridis, and some good striking movements between Lawrence Shankland and Claudio Braga. They were well supported.
Demanding McInnes said: 'You need to be aggressive in the first contact and look after the first pass, so there was a lot of that, but I was still looking for a bit more even within that first half in terms of the types of crosses we put in, when to cross and decision making at times.
'I am also conscious that pre-season, these games are to sharpen up your work but, because the focus is on you to win games competitively, it is not always straight forward. We got the job done and we are back in training on Sunday.
'Get some training into the lads, see them assessed in terms of injuries.'
Beni Baningime was a noteable absentee at Forthbank because of a strain from training on Friday. He was not expected to train on Sunday but, hopefully, he will be ready to play some part in the game against Dumbarton at Tynecastle on Wednesday (kick-off 19.45) in the same competition.
The ex-Aberdeen and Kilmarnock boss added that good habits, winning games, clean sheets are what his is looking for but he stressed: 'Listen, we are a wee bit short of what I am looking for.'
McInnes also praised 2,000 fans for coming to Stirling in big numbers in the heavy rain and he said: 'I am finding out about the team, they want to find out about the team, and any time you make the effort to travel it is important to see the team win and get a wee flavour of what we could be.
'Bigger challenges ahead, of course, but we dealt with the challenge that was here today.'

How the groups look as clubs eye place in League Cup second round

There are nine places in the League Cup second round up for grabs as the group stage comes to a close this weekend. Motherwell and Hearts have already booked their places in Sunday's draw along with European qualifiers Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen, Hibernian and Dundee United. The eight group winners qualify for the last 16 along with the three runners-up with the best records. The three group winners with the best records will be seeded in the draw along with the five European qualifiers. Here is the state of play in each group ahead of the finale. Falkirk will secure top spot if they beat Spartans at home. Cove Rangers are only a point behind ahead of their trip to Queen's Park while Spartans will leapfrog the Bairns if they pull off a shock. Falkirk's superior goal difference could help them out if they are held to a draw. It's all to play for in Dingwall as leaders Partick Thistle aim to maintain their 100 per cent record and potentially seal a seeded place in the draw. Ross County need to beat the Jags to move above them, although a draw and shoot-out success could potentially seal a best runners-up spot. Another winner-takes-all encounter takes place at the Albert Bartlett Stadium where Airdrie and Alloa will put their perfect records on the line. A winner would also be in the running for a seeded place. It all comes down to Sunday's game in Paisley where St Mirren need to beat Ayr to claim top spot. A draw would suffice for Scott Brown's side and a win would put them in a strong position to claim a seeded place given their goal difference of 12. Even a defeat could see Ayr progress as best runners-up. They will know exactly what is needed by then. Hearts have put themselves in a commanding position to claim a seeded place given they finished on 12 points and a goal difference of 15. Dunfermline can move on to nine points and will be looking to add to their goal difference of two when they host Stirling, to push for a best runners-up place. St Johnstone are looking to continue their perfect record and boost their goal difference of 5 when they host Elgin. Inverness need to beat Raith Rovers and hope Saints suffer a shock defeat to win the group, but with a goal difference of five, they would be contenders for a best runners-up spot if they win in Kirkcaldy and the hosts get a result in Perth. Motherwell finished on 11 points and still have a slim chance of being among the seeds. Morton and Clyde both have six points and are playing for second place at Cappielow, but a winner would likely need to boost their goal difference significantly in order to qualify for the second round. Kilmarnock will guarantee top spot if they beat second-placed East Fife at home but Livingston are only a point behind ahead of hosting Kelty Hearts. Even fourth-placed Kelty have a chance of topping the group but Livi will also have an eye on a best runners-up spot if Killie slip up and they can find some goals. Hearts 'can still be better' despite perfect League Cup record

Stephen Kingsley says there' still room for improvement for Hearts despite breezing through the Premier Sports Cup group stage with a 100% record. Derek McInnes' side cruised past Dumbarton on Wednesday night to book their spot in the last 4-0 victory was also the fourth successive match the Tynecastle club scored four goals in the competition. "We've started games well recently, so I think that's a big thing," defender Kingsley said. "We've scored early in every single one of them, so it was important we did that and kick on. "I think we can still improve again. I think we can still be better at times and we can definitely be a bit more clinical, but it's good signs."That's 16 goals in four games that we've played and one goal conceded, so it's a good sign for us going forward."

SPFL hammer Hamilton Accies with a season-long transfer embargo

It's more bad news for the struggling Lanarkshire side Hamilton Accies have been hit with a season-long transfer embargo and £7,500 fine, the SPFL has announced. ‌ The Lanarkshire side, who were docked 15 points and fined £9,000 in May for breaching multiple SPFL rules, were releagted from the Championship last season and their woes have been compounded by today's news the club has been banned from signing players after the club admitted to three counts of failing to notify the SPFL it had been in default of its tax obligations to HMRC. ‌ John Rankin's side have been fielding some players as trialists, including Ricki Lamie and Charlie Telfer, in the Premier Sports Cup matches this month and the Accies gaffer said last week he hoped the ban would be lifted in time for them to sign for the new League One season starting on August 2. ‌ However, the club's hopes of winning the League One title have been dealt a huge blow by the news they will be unable to strengthen the squad in this window and the January 2026 transfer window. A statement from the SPFL read: "The SPFL can today confirm that an independent disciplinary tribunal has imposed a season-long transfer embargo on Hamilton Academical FC. "The William Hill League 1 club was already subject to a transfer embargo following remuneration and tax defaults which were determined or admitted during season 2024/25. ‌ "Any SPFL club that fails to settle its tax obligations or pay its players on time is subject to an automatic transfer embargo under SPFL Rules. "At a hearing which took place on Thursday 24 July, Hamilton Academical FC admitted to further breaches of SPFL Rules by failing to settle its tax obligations to HMRC on three occasions, and for failing to notify the SPFL that it had been in default of its tax obligations to HMRC on each occasion, as required by SPFL Rules. ‌ "Following these latest admitted breaches by the club, an independent disciplinary tribunal imposed the following sanctions: • a transfer embargo which will remain in place until the opening of the registration window, which follows the end of season 2025/26; and • A fine of £7,500 - £5,000 of which is suspended."
