Couple wanted to adopt one shelter dog — but fell for three of them. ‘So grateful'
'It was an incredible thing to watch a family come in, meet one dog, then fall in love with two others, too,' Samantha Ahnen, community engagement manager for the Jacksonville Humane Society, told McClatchy News via email. 'We are so grateful to folks like this family who open their hearts and homes to homeless pets, especially those who are older and have some health concerns.'
One of the dogs, Piccolo, got a fresh start after he landed at the shelter in early February. The 'special' dog needed a home after his previous family couldn't provide adequate medical care. He didn't have most of his teeth and was in rough shape.
'Piccolo was 12-years-old, his fur was severely matted, and his tongue always stuck out to the side,' the shelter wrote Feb. 18 on Facebook.
Over time, the shelter believed he would be an ideal candidate for its Senior Spotlight, a social media series that sometimes highlights older dogs waiting for new owners.
'Piccolo is a very sweet and enthusiastic pup,' Ahnen wrote in her email. 'Despite his age, Piccolo has an adventurous personality and loves going on long walks, playing, and making new human friends.'
But Piccolo never made it into a Senior Spotlight post. Instead, his luck changed when he caught the eye of two shelter visitors.
'One day, a lovely couple visited JHS looking to adopt a small dog,' the humane society wrote. 'Little did they know they would leave with THREE. These folks not only adopted Piccolo, but also 9-year-old Max and 15-year-old Victor.'
Max and Victor had arrived at the shelter after their previous families 'made the selfless decision' to surrender them, helping them get proper medical care, according to Ahnen. They are described as 'lovable and social pups' who have health conditions but defy expectations for older dogs.
The dogs' heartwarming adoption resonated with several social media users. While some praised the couple for giving the trio a home, others said the good news made them emotional.
'Awww, I'm not crying, you're crying. Happy tears, here,' a Facebook user posted. 'Thankful to this lovely couple for giving Piccolo, Max, and Victor the opportunity to live out their golden years in a loving home.'
'Everyone at JHS was misty-eyed the day these 3 were adopted,' Ahnen wrote.

'Lucy's injured leg definitely took a toll on her,' Massey wrote. 'She was on strict exercise restriction due to her leg injury. Cattle dogs like Lucy need jobs to do and lots of enrichment, so our team worked around the clock to ensure she was mentally stimulated.' At one point, someone tied to the veterinarian's office felt drawn to Lucy's 'sweet, adorable, and happy' personality. Though the woman was hesitant to take the dog home at first, the two soon kicked off their next chapter together. 'It was a big adjustment for her to walk around the farm with me and see all of the new things and animals,' said the woman, identified only as Brittany in a Facebook post from the shelter. 'You could tell by her face and eyes that she loved it instantly! It did take Lucy some time to adjust to my current pack of pups and to learn that the chickens were not to be chased and caught with our mouths!!!' The woman said Lucy became even more affectionate after she adopted her. Now, the pup loves being close to her new owner — unless she's trying to herd animals like geese or horses. 'It's the ultimate happy ending that fills our team with joy,' Massey wrote.

Two young moose were spotted cooling off in sprinklers in an Idaho field, a video shows. The animals then had quite the adventure, with numerous sightings across the city of Blackfoot. The wild animals were filmed July 22 as they lounged in a field under sprinklers, Brenda Stanley posted in Life in Blackfoot, a page on Facebook. Stanley could not be immediately reached by McClatchy News on July 24. 'Free dinner and a shower, can't get any better than that,' someone commented on the post. 'Hot moose cooling off,' another person wrote. The moose were then caught on camera near Walmart and Super 8, one person shared in a Facebook post. 'Mooses on the looses!!' Stephanie Herbert wrote. More sightings were reported of the yearling male and female in parking lots near Ridley's Family Markets store and Taco Bell, the Idaho Fish and Game said in a July 23 news release. Wildlife officers, with help from police and animal control, tranquilized the animals and relocated them to a 'remote area,' officials said. The agency reminded the public to keep a distance from moose. 'Though moose can look a little awkward and clumsy, they are quick animals known to charge when people and pets get too close,' wildlife officials said in the release. Blackfoot is in eastern Idaho. What to know about moose Moose are protective animals and will 'defend themselves if they perceive a threat,' according to the National Park Service. If someone encounters a moose, they should give it space to leave, wildlife officials said. People shouldn't try to haze a moose to move out of the way. 'Don't be aggressive,' the National Park Service said. 'You want to convince the moose that you aren't a threat.' Wildlife officials said people should do the following if you see a moose: Stay undetected if the moose hasn't spotted you. Talk softly and move the moose charges, take cover and put something between you and the moose or run away.

Powerball player wins $2 million in Georgia. Where was lucky ticket sold?
A Powerball player is about to get richer after a stop at an Atlanta-area gas station. The lucky player won $2 million in the drawing Wednesday, July 23, narrowly missing the estimated $326 million jackpot, according to the Georgia Lottery. The winning ticket, sold at a QuikTrip station in Stone Mountain, matched five white ball numbers but not the Powerball, results show. The player would have won $1 million, but spent an extra $1 on the Power Play multiplier. The ticket hadn't been claimed as of Thursday morning, a lottery spokesperson told McClatchy News. The Powerball numbers for July 23 were 2-18-19-25-35 and red Powerball 25, according to the lottery game's website. The Power Play option was 3x.
