HC directs Mohali SSP to decide UK-based woman's plea alleging harassment over property, visa fraud
The directions came from Justice Sukhvinder Kaur while disposing of a petition filed by Gurpreet Kaur, currently residing in England. She had sought action on her complaint dated June 12, 2025, against six private individuals.
According to the petition, Gurpreet had previously worked as a student consultant with an immigration company in India and had helped one of the individuals named in the complaint, who was seeking to go to the UK. The petitioner claimed the woman was unqualified and unskilled, and had no realistic prospects of securing a work visa, despite which she insisted on seeking immigration advice.
Gurpreet alleged that after she moved to the UK in July 2023, the woman continued to seek help, claiming she had lost Rs 18.5 lakh to an immigration firm and that her marriage was under strain because of the failed visa attempt. Out of sympathy, Gurpreet's family allowed her to stay in their newly purchased house in Kharar.
Later, Gurpreet alleged, the woman again attempted to secure a visa through another agent, and her family provided financial assistance. However, when this attempt also failed, Gurpreet claimed she was alerted by neighbours about unusual activity at the Kharar house and asked the woman to vacate the premises.
Following this, Gurpreet alleged the woman began causing trouble and tried to illegally occupy the property. She claimed that defamatory posters declaring the house as 'disputed' and labelling her family as fraudsters were pasted outside the home, and that she also received threatening calls from the woman's husband.
Gurpreet's plea further said she fears being falsely implicated in police cases by the woman and others allegedly linked to the immigration firm.
Taking note of the submissions, the court said it saw no objection from the state counsel and directed the SSP, Mohali, to examine the June 12 representation and take appropriate action as per law.
The petition was filed through Gurpreet's father and power of attorney holder, Inderpal Singh.

The police said Yadav first opened fire at them, leading to a retaliatory firing in which he was shot dead. Yadav was a native of Sahebpur Kamal in the Begusarai district of Bihar and had been absconding for months in connection with the kidnapping and murder of local Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) leader Rakesh Kumar. The police said Yadav allegedly abducted Kumar, the party's 20-point block president, from the Sahebpur Kamal police station area by Dabloo in April and later killed him. Kumar's body was later found in a river in the Diara region. 'A reward of Rs 50,000 had been declared for his arrest. He was a key suspect in several other heinous crimes across Bihar,' the Bihar Police said in their statement to the press. 'Yadav was on the run for a long time. Acting on intelligence inputs, our team reached Uttar Pradesh and coordinated with Noida STF. During the operation in Hapur, the accused opened fire and was killed in the retaliatory firing,' the police added.

Bihar Gangster Killed In Police Encounter In Uttar Pradesh
Hapur/Lucknow: A gangster wanted in a high-profile murder case in Bihar was killed in an encounter with police in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior officer said here on Monday. The gunfight broke out on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, Additional Director General (ADG) of UP STF Amitabh Yash said in a statement. The exchange of fire took place in the Simbhaoli area of Hapur district, involving the Noida unit of the special task force of the Uttar Pradesh Police, along with Bihar Police and Hapur police. During the encounter, the gangster sustained a gunshot injury to his chest and was rushed to a hospital, where he succumbed to injuries, he said. According to ADG Yash, a significant quantity of firearms, cartridges, and other items were seized. The dead has been identified as Dabloo Yadav, a resident of Sahebpur Kamal area in Begusarai district of Bihar. He was a wanted criminal in a murder case and carried a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on his head. Yadav was the main accused in the abduction and murder of Vikash Kumar alias Rakesh Kadam, the block president of the Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM party) and a social worker, in Begusarai district, the STF said. On May 24, 2025, Yadav, with the help of his gang, kidnapped Kadam from the Sahebpur Kamal area and took him to the riverine 'diara' region where he was killed and buried under sand to conceal the body, the STF added.

Woman, 62, Wanted To Buy Sleeping Pills, But Lost Rs 77 Lakh In Digital Arrest
A search for a prescribed drug led to a sexagenarian falling prey to a digital arrest and fraud amounting to Rs 77 lakh. The story dates to August of 2024, when a 62-year-old woman, Neeru, was browsing different drug stores' websites to purchase sleeping pills, a medicine she takes every month for her neurological illness. Neeru ordered the required medicines and forgot about them until she received a call from an officer, claiming to be a Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer, accusing her of buying "illicit drugs". Neeru, a former teacher who lives alone in Delhi's Vasant Kunj, panicked. The man, claiming to be from the NCB, said that the department was suspecting her of supplying drugs in the national capital, Delhi. The NCB officer gave the elderly woman two options: transfer some money to verify the bank account details or face an arrest warrant. Afraid, Neetu transferred Rs 3 lakh to different bank accounts just to prove her innocence. 10 Days Later: 'Good Cop' Joins 10 days later, Neetu received another call, this time from another man who also claimed to be from NCB, but a 'good cop'. The man offered the much-needed validation to Neeru, assuring her of her innocence and promising to recover the money. Within two days, the 62-year-old received Rs 20,000 back into her account, allegedly the first of many promised transactions to bring back the lost month. The 'good cop' had now gained her trust. WhatsApp Video Call Then came a video call on WhatsApp from four men, including the 'good cop'. The four 'officials' asked the woman to share her screen and open her bank account, after which all her money would be returned. Trusting the good cop, the woman followed the instructions and unknowingly gave net banking access to the fraudsters. Before the woman could realise, multiple debit messages flashed on her mobile phone, with transactions ranging from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. When she called the trusted 'good cop', his phone was switched off. Real Cops Get Into Play On September 24, she registered a complaint at the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSCO) Unit of the Delhi Police's Special Cell. A team under ACP Manoj Kumar and Sub Inspector Karamvir started investigating digital arrest. After nine months, on June 24, 2025, the police got a lead and arrested Akhilesh, one of the accused, from his rented flat in Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar. During the interrogation, Akhilesh pleaded guilty to transferring the money from the victim's bank account, along with accomplices Amjad, Shahid and Shakeel. The accused revealed that he made the woman share her phone screen on a video call, through which they gained access to the bank account. On June 27, the police raised Punhana in Haryana and arrested Amjad, who won Neeru's trust by pretending to be a good cop, and his accomplice Shahid. During interrogation, Amjad revealed that he, along with his brother-in-law, Shahid, and friend Shakeel, were conspiring to extort money from the woman by threatening to implicate her in a false case. He also said that the fourth accused, Hamid, was involved in threatening the woman by posing as a fake NCB officer or a 'bad cop'. On July 1, the police raided Hamid's house in Rajasthan's Deeg and arrested both Hamid and Shakeel despite villagers' efforts to save the two. Neeru has received only Rs 3 lakh so far. The police are investigating several bank accounts through which the money was moved around. In the mobile phones seized from the five accused, the police have reportedly found evidence of sextortion of other victims. It is further being investigated.
