Jake Gyllenhaal set for Code Black
Jake Gyllenhaal is to star in Code Black.
The 44-year-old actor's Nine Stories are to develop the political thriller, which is based on a new short story by Harrison Query, as a starring vehicle for Jake, with the film's rights secured by Amazon MGM Studios as part of their first-look deal with the company, Deadline reports.
Amazon MGM secured the rights for a guaranteed seven-figure sum, in what is believed to be one of the biggest deals of all times for a short story.
Harrison himself will adapt the tale for the big screen.
Code Black will see Jake play the US' top heart surgeon, who is flown to Washington D.C. to carry out a high-stakes operation, only to be embroiled in a trap that he needs to work his way out of to stop a plot that threatens both his family and the country.
As well as Jake and Nine Stories' Josh McLaughlin, producers in talks for the film include Lynn Harris and Matt Reeves of 6th + Idaho, and Scott Glassgold of 12:01 Films.
Nine Stories' three-year deal with Amazon MGM Studios was announced in April last year.
As well as 'Road House', which was helmed by Doug Liman, Jake starred in Guy Ritchie's 'The Covenant' for Amazon MGM Studios before inking the deal.
He said in a statement at the time: "I've worked with Amazon MGM on two films this past year, and they've been a wonderful partner both times.
"Their dedication to filmmaking is contagious, and I so admire their commitment to fans all over the world. I am thrilled to formalise what is an already fruitful collaboration-especially on the heels of Road House's outstanding debut.'
Julie Rapaport, head of film production and development at Amazon MGM Studios, commented: "Jake is a one-of-a-kind talent whose passion and eye for filmmaking makes him a powerful storyteller both in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
"Following the record-breaking success of Road House, we could not imagine a better time to officially cement our relationship. Matthew Goode has revealed the dark reason James Bond producers rejected him moments after meeting him. James Bond bosses have been whittling down the long list of actors for years in a desperate bid to find the man who will replace Daniel Craig. Barbara Broccoli, 65, along with her brother Michael G. Wilson, 83, were the producers of the Bond franchise before they were replaced by Amazon MGM Studios for a massive $1 billion dollar deal in February. And before they chose Craig, Dept. Q star Goode revealed on Thursday's episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he was personally invited for a sit down chat with the producers who were seemingly interested in potentially having him be the new Bond before the role eventually went to Craig. However, sadly the meeting didn't go as the actor had planned. 'I didn't get to the audition,' remarked the star. 'But it was quite a funny one because — and she's gorgeous and just a lovely, lovely person — she was like, 'So what's your idea for Bond?' And I was like, 'My idea for Bond. 'Ultimately, you know. What they did get was Daniel Craig.' Meanwhile, the rumour mill has been continually whirring as to who will take on the iconic 007 gig. But most recently, it was Aaron Taylor-Johnson who has dropped hints that he'll be stepping into Bond's shoes. The Marvel movie star, 34, recently signed a deal with Omega – the brand of watch the 007 spy wears. Omega has been supplying timepieces to the iconic movie character since the release of 1995's Golden Eye. When asked previously whether he would step into Bond's shoes, the Marvel star said: 'I find it charming and wonderful that people see me in that role. I take it as a great compliment.'

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve to direct next James Bond film
Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will direct the next James Bond movie, Amazon MGM Studios has announced. The untitled film will be the first since the studio took creative reins of the storied film franchise after decades of control by the Broccoli family. Producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman had maintained that before the next Bond was cast, they would first develop a screenplay and find a director. Now, they have one of the most respected blockbuster-makers in Hollywood, who is coming off a pair of widely acclaimed "Dune" films. Villeneuve has also been nominated for the Oscars four times, won seven Canadian Screen Awards, five British Academy Film Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards. In a statement, the 57-year-old French Canadian filmmaker said he grew up watching Bond movies. "I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory," Villeneuve said. "I intend to honour the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come. This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honour." Since taking creative control of Bond in February, Amazon MGM has worked quickly to get the next movie going. The studio is also trying to win over fans sceptical of the new corporate leadership and those fearful of future spin-offs. "James Bond is in the hands of one of today's greatest filmmakers," said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios. Villeneuve beat out a field of directors floated for the movie, including Edward Berger (Conclave), Paul King (Paddington 2), Edgar Wright (Baby Driver), and Jonathan Nolan, co-creator of Westworld and brother to Christopher Nolan. "Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy," said Pascal and Heyman. "It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it's ours, too." No release date has yet been announced for the next Bond movie. Villeneuve will shoot the third Dune film this summer. If production on Bond began next year, a release sometime in 2027 would be likely. Villeneuve's first two Dune films have together surpassed $US1 billion ($1.5 billion) in box office worldwide and been nominated for a combined 15 Academy Awards, winning seven. His other films include Blade Runner 2049, Arrival, Sicario, Prisoners, Enemy, and Incendies. Amazon bought MGM Studios in 2022 for $US8.5 billion, but did not gain creative control of the studio's most prized asset until this year.
