Australia's A-League to have Ramadan breaks again this season

Reuters28-02-2025
SYDNEY, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Australia's A-League will this season again allow a 90-second pause in play for Muslim players to break their fast during the month of Ramadan if evening matches are being played over sunset.
Practising Muslim adults do not eat or drink from dawn to sunset during the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, presenting obvious challenges to professional athletes.
Sydney FC's Morroco under-23 international Anas Ouahim said the initiative, introduced by the A-League last season, was very important to Muslim players.
"It's definitely challenging. Some jobs are more physically demanding than others, and as a footballer, you do need food and water to perform at your best," the midfielder said in an A-League media release.
"When you don't drink or eat for so long, breaking your fast on time is crucial -- it helps you hydrate, maybe have a date or something small to regain energy."
With Ramadan having started in Australia on Thursday night, Ouahim will be able to avail himself of the break when the ball goes out of play after sunset if he is selected for Sydney FC's match against Macarthur on Saturday.
"Especially for professional athletes, having that opportunity is really beneficial," the German-born former FC Koln player added.
"It allows me to practice my religion while still playing the sport I love, and I've found a balance that works well."

Mark Clattenburg accuses ex-Chelsea star John Obi Mikel of trying to PUNCH him after racial abuse allegations - as he claims Blues wanted 'payback' for John Terry's race row with Anton Ferdinand

Mark Clattenburg has accused former Chelsea star John Obi Mikel of trying to punch him amid his row with the club in 2012. The ex-Premier League referee, 50, says Mikel burst into his dressing room at Stamford Bridge after a heated match between Chelsea and Manchester United in October 2012, during which he was accused of a racial slur. Chelsea alleged that Clattenburg had called Mikel a 'monkey' during the match but he was subsequently cleared by the FA, while the midfielder was later banned and fined £60,000 for threatening the official. Now Clattenburg has speculated that Chelsea were just trying to get 'payback' after their captain John Terry was banned for an incident involving QPR star Anton Ferdinand in a game the year before. Terry was banned, fined £220,000, and stripped of the England captaincy as the FA found he had racially abused Ferdinand - but he was separately cleared by Westminster Magistrates' Court. Clattenburg told Under The Cosh: 'There was a bit of commotion outside the dressing room door [after the Chelsea vs Man United game]. I opened the door thinking, "what the f****** h*** is going on here?" He claims Chelsea were just trying to get 'payback' for the John Terry being found guilty by the FA of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand the year before 'As I opened the door, John Obi Mikel came bursting through and started swinging punches. I ducked. He tried to pin me against the wall and went: "F****** h***!" 'I didn't know what had gone on, I thought somebody had maybe accused me at that point! 'Everyone just went white, like, "f****** h***, what has happened there?" 'The funny thing was, about 30 seconds later, there was a knock on my door. I thought, "not again, Obi Mikel is coming through the door." 'I opened it and it was one of the security guys and he went, "Obi Mikel has left his flip-flop in the dressing room, can he have it back?" 'I went, "are you taking the f****** p***?' Clattenburg has described the mental torment and paranoia of being accused of the slur for which he was cleared. 'That John Obi Mikel situation, I didn't want to come back. I wanted to finish refereeing after that. It was an absolute disgrace what happened,' he said. Terry has always denied the allegations and he was cleared in court after being charged 'I had a family, a child, a mortgage. If I had left, what could I do? I didn't have anywhere to go. 'I was accused of being a racist. I was supposed to have called him a monkey after the Chelsea vs Man United match. 'It took around a month of investigating by the FA. For the first few days I couldn't eat or drink. You go through questioning yourself - have I done it? 'How could I referee? I was in bits. I was mentally gone. We threatened to strike because we felt the behaviour of the football club was wrong. 'To leave us out high and dry and with the media outside my house ever day of the week, being accused of something I hadn't done was tough. 'That moment of attempted assault - he never laid a hand on me but swung at me a couple of times - I don't know if they're thinking, "f***, we're in trouble here, he's trying to report." 'All the match observer was talking about was, what I was going to report. Nothing about racism, all it was about was, what I was going to report. What happened in the dressing room with Obi Mikel. And an hour later I was accused of being a racist. 'I know the game was volatile and a lot was going on. I don't know if he was just upset with the result and lost it. Had he been drug tested? Players didn't like being drug tested. So maybe he couldn't go the toilet. All these little things upset people. I thought he was just upset and I'd got in the line of attack. 'He shouldn't even have got near the dressing room with the security. Where did the security go? 'He got banned three matches a lot later after my investigation went on. 'I think it was a payback for John Terry and Anton Ferdinand at QPR vs Chelsea., where Terry was accused of saying some words to Anton.'

NYC skyscraper shooter blamed NFL for his mental health issues, mayor says

NEW YORK, July 29 (Reuters) - The man who killed four people with a semi-automatic rifle while rampaging through a Midtown Manhattan office tower carried a note with him that appeared to blame the National Football League for a degenerative brain disease he said he had, New York Mayor Eric Adams said on Tuesday. Police have identified the shooter as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old Las Vegas resident and former high school football player and said he had a history of mental illness. Tamura killed two security officers and two office workers before ending the Monday evening massacre by shooting himself in the chest on the 33rd floor of the Park Avenue skyscraper. It was the deadliest mass shooting in New York City in a quarter of a century. The NFL has its headquarters in the skyscraper alongside major financial firms, but Tamura used the wrong elevator bank and ended up in the offices of Rudin Management, a real estate company that owns the building, where he killed one Rudin employee, the mayor said. "The note alluded to that he felt he had CTE, a known brain injury for those who participate in contact sports," Adams told CBS News. "He appeared to have blamed the NFL for his injury," even though he never played at that level of American football. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a serious brain disease with no known treatment that can be caused by repeated shaking of the brain that can occur when playing contact sports. Linked to aggression and dementia, the condition can only be diagnosed conclusively after death. The NFL has paid more than $1 billion to settle concussion-related lawsuits, opens new tab with thousands of retired players after the deaths of several high-profile players. It has made changes to the sport to mitigate the risk of concussions. Tamura was never an NFL player, but online records show he played football at his California high school and was a varsity player at a Los Angeles charter school until graduating in 2016, according to school sports databases. The note found in his wallet said his football career was cut short by a brain injury and that the NFL had not done enough to address CTE in the sport, Bloomberg News reported. A former coach, Walter Roby, told Fox News that Tamura was a "quiet, hard worker" and one of his "top offensive players" during the year he spent on the team at Granada Hills Charter School. Wesley LePatner, a senior executive who oversaw some of the Blackstone's (BX.N), opens new tab real estate operations was also among those Tamura killed, according to the private equity firm, which also has its headquarters in the tower. Several other Blackstone employees were injured. The skyscraper was closed to workers on Tuesday, as were some neighboring buildings, although much of Park Avenue hummed as usual. Chad Gordon, a 36-year-old strategist at an insurance firm, works in the building next door and often walks over to eat lunch or use the ATM. "I luckily left about 20 minutes before the shooting happened," he said. "It's just terrifying." The shooting follows last year's murder of a UnitedHealth executive outside a hotel about three blocks away from Monday's rampage. Prosecutors say the man charged with that murder targeted his victim as a symbol of corporate greed. According to the police account, as soon as Tamura entered the lobby he fatally shot a New York Police Department officer, Didarul Islam, 36, who came from Bangladesh. Islam was part of the building's security detail, police said. Islam has two young sons, according to his cousin Mizanul Haque in his hometown in Bangladesh's Sylhet region. Hours before the killing, Islam had "laughed and chatted like always" with his cousin on the WhatsApp messaging app. "When I heard the news, it felt like the sky had fallen on me," Haque told Reuters. Tamura then shot a security guard stationed at a desk in the lobby. The guard was identified by his labor union 32BJ SEIU in a statement as Aland Etienne. He was "a dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely seriously." Etienne's brother said in a social media post that the family were heartbroken: "He was a father, a son and a light in our eyes," Gathmand Etienne said. Tamura also killed LePatner before taking the elevator and exiting the Rudin offices. An NFL employee was also injured and was in stable condition at a hospital, according to a memo sent by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to league staff. Goodell wrote that an "increased security presence" was planned for the league's offices "in the days and weeks to come." A spokesperson for the NFL did not respond to queries about the shooter's reported motives. Tamura appeared to have driven to New York City from Las Vegas over three days and to have acted alone, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters on Monday night. Security video circulated by police showed a man walking from a double-parked car into the tower carrying what police identified as an M4 Carbine, a large semi-automatic rifle popular with civilian U.S. gun enthusiasts modeled on a fully automatic rifle used by the U.S. military. In Nevada, unlike New York, no permit is needed to buy a rifle or carry it openly in public. A widely circulated photo showed the permit issued to Tamura by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department allowing him to legally carry a concealed gun. He had recently worked as a security guard at a Las Vegas casino, Fox 11 News channel in Los Angeles reported. On two occasions, in 2022 and 2024, records show law enforcement officials detained him for up to 72 hours under a "mental health crisis hold," which requires the detainee to be evaluated at a hospital, ABC News reported.

EA forecasts quarterly bookings below expectations on cautious gamer spending

July 29 (Reuters) - Electronic Arts (EA.O), opens new tab forecast net bookings below Wall Street expectations on Tuesday, pressured by uncertain consumer spending on its core sports portfolio amid a challenging economic environment. With shifting U.S. trade policies threatening to push inflation higher, gamers have become more cautious with discretionary spending. EA said the second-quarter bookings forecast includes a four percentage point year-over-year headwind , due to changes in recognizing returns from the Ultimate Edition of "FC 26", which will now be booked in the third quarter. Earlier this month, the videogame publisher launched "College Football 26", hoping to build on the success of last year's edition, which became one of the best-selling titles of 2024. However, analysts warned that growth comparisons for "College Football 26" may be challenging, given the breakout success of its predecessor, which revived the franchise after a more than 10-year hiatus. The company said it expects a more "normalized curve" for College Football sales, partially offset by the launch of "Madden NFL 26". EA last week unveiled the first trailer for "Battlefield 6, placing a big bet on the title to reinvigorate the franchise after the previous installment fell short of fan expectations. The title is set to launch in EA's current fiscal year with analysts expecting the game to sell millions of copies. EA forecast second-quarter bookings of between $1.80 billion and $1.90 billion, below analysts' expectations of $2.01 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. For the first quarter, EA reported bookings of $1.30 billion beating estimates of $1.29 billion. The Redwood city, California-based company reaffirmed its full-year bookings forecast.
