Venturi Space Shows Off Its Pitch for a New Lunar Lander
Monaco-based Venturi Space has debuted a new design for a next-generation lunar rover that it's calling Mona Luna. It's a pitch that it hopes the European Space Agency (ESA) will pick up during its ministerial conference later this year. It includes a new deformable wheel design and a sleek, futuristic look, with instruments held near the center to protect against harsh moon temperature swings throughout the day/night cycle.
The Venturi Space pitch is that the ESA already has a lunar launch vehicle in the Ariane 6, and a lunar lander in the Argonaut for future payload delivery to the Moon. But what it doesn't have, though, is a lunar rover, and Venturi wants to be the company to provide it, as Space.com reports.
Mona Luna is a next-generation rover design that looks sleek and futuristic, eschewing the gangly, many-limbed rovers we're used to seeing exploring Mars in recent years. That's because the Mona Luna keeps most of its instruments internally to better protect them against the extreme elements and temperature swings that can be experienced on the moon's surface.
In the above concept video, Venturi shows the rover opening its back panel to reveal a number of modular sensors and tools, which the articulating arm can attach and detach to and from at will. That allows a single arm to provide the full functionality of the rover, cutting back on overall costs and weight in the design. It also allows each instrument to have the same level of flexible control.
Another technology Venturi is pioneering for this design is its deformable wheels. These wheels are capable of handling extreme temperature swings from -240 degrees C to 130 degrees C while retaining the same strength and support so that the rover can continue to operate even in the lunar south pole. This hyper-mobile wheel design should also let the rover traverse more demanding surface conditions, letting it travel where previous rovers would be unable to even attempt.
Although the rover's weight is 1650 pounds, with payloads, it could reach as high as 4,400 pounds. The wheels are designed to handle that while still maintaining the ability to reach nine miles per hour or up to 12 miles per hour with lighter payloads.
If Venturi is successful in convincing the ESA to provide some of its budget for a rover contract, it will be able to show proof of its concepts before a potential 2030+ mission. The wheel technologies are being used in the next generation of NASA's own lunar vehicle, the Flex Rover, currently under development at California-based Astrolab. That vehicle is expected to launch for a lunar south pole mission sometime in 2026 or 2027.

GenAI job postings rise across Europe: Which countries lead the way?
Recent figures reveal a sharp rise in the share of job postings mentioning generative AI (GenAI) over the past two years across Europe, North America, and Australia. 'Nearly every job will be impacted by AI (artificial intelligence) at some point,' said Pawel Adrjan, Director of Economic Research at Indeed. In major European economies, the share of GenAI-related job postings more than doubled in the 12 months to March 2025, according to the global hiring platform Indeed. GenAI jobs refer to roles involving the development, implementation, or oversight of generative artificial intelligence technologies. This could include positions building GenAI features, or roles leveraging this tech to create more efficient processes such as reviewing data, summarising reports, or drafting written or creative materials. Ireland is leading the way by a significant extent in Europe when it comes to these kinds of jobs. Indeed data shows that, as of 31 March 2025, more than 0.7% of Irish job postings include terms related to GenAI. This is an increase of 204%, with the share more than tripling in just one year. The figure was only 0.02% in the same period in 2023, highlighting a tremendous rise over the past two years. For comparison, job openings in Ireland for chefs currently represent 1.1% of total postings. Opportunities for lorry drivers and bartenders represent 0.8% and 0.6% respectively. These figures highlight Ireland's position at the forefront of digital innovation in the European labour market. "Ireland's leading presence in GenAI job postings reflects the country's well-established technology sector and its role as a European base for many global firms,' Pawel Adrjan told Euronews Business. 'With a high concentration of tech employers, including major multinationals and a number of start-ups, it's natural we would see a proportionate increase in GenAI roles there too,' he added. Globally recognised names such as Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce, and Tencent, among many others, have established significant European operations in Ireland. Adrjan of Indeed also noted that the steady growth in AI-related roles is also indicative of Ireland's focus on industries like software, financial services, and life sciences, which are increasingly integrating AI tools into their operations. Several major EU and international markets — including Germany, France, Australia, the US, the UK, and Canada — lag behind Ireland in incorporating GenAI into job roles. In each of these countries, the share of job postings mentioning GenAI remains at or below 0.3% as of late March 2025. However, the share has risen by around 100% or more in these European countries over the past year. This highlights how the job market is evolving, even if still well behind Ireland's 204% increase. The UK has the highest share of GenAI-related job postings among the three largest European economies, at 0.33% as of 31 March 2025. That's up 120% from 0.15% the previous year. Germany follows with 0.23% (a 109% annual increase), and France at 0.21% (a 91% increase). GenAI jobs appear across a range of categories. Among the top occupations in Ireland where job postings mention GenAI, mathematics leads by a wide margin. As of March 2025, 14.7% of advertised roles in mathematics referenced GenAI, significantly higher than any other category. This was followed by software development (4.9%), media & communications (3.9%), architecture (2.4%), and scientific research & development (2.1%). Other fields showing notable GenAI activity include industrial engineering (1.8%), legal (1.7%), marketing (1.6%), medical information (1.5%), and production & manufacturing (0.9%). Pawel Adrjan explained that in many developed markets, ageing populations are contributing to labour shortages and widening skills gaps. As a result, employers face growing competition for talent and are increasingly turning to skills-first hiring approaches, including the use of AI to expand and enhance their workforce. While nearly every job will be impacted by AI at some point, Adrjan emphasised that human intelligence remains a key requirement. 'We know that GenAI tools are an excellent resource to enhance efficiencies, but they are currently limited in comparison to human expertise,' he said. Joint research by Indeed and the World Economic Forum earlier this year showed that humans will remain an essential part of the global workforce as AI continues to evolve. Indeed analysed over 2,800 work-related skills to assess GenAI's potential to substitute employees. The findings show that around two-thirds (69%) are unlikely to be replaced by GenAI, underscoring the continued importance of human expertise in the workplace. The chart above shows the likelihood of certain skills to be replaced or substituted by GenAI. They are ranked from 'very low capacity' (hard to replace) to 'high capacity' (easy to replace). AI and Big Data, as well as reading, writing, and mathematics are on the 'high capacity' side of the scale. On the 'very low capacity' side of the scale, we can see sensory-processing abilities, along with empathy and active listening.

Archaeology student used a computer model to predict a Roman army camp's location — and it worked

The remains of an ancient Roman army camp have been discovered in the Netherlands, beyond the empire's northern frontier, after researchers used a computer model to pinpoint its location. The "rare" find, at a site called Hoog Buurlo, shows that Roman forces were venturing beyond the Lower German Limes, the boundary that ran along the Rhine roughly 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) south of the camp. "For the Netherlands this is only the fourth Roman temporary camp, so quite a rare find," said Saskia Stevens, an associate professor of ancient history and classical civilization at Utrecht University and the principal investigator of the "Constructing the Limes" project that found the fort. "The fact that it was discovered north of the Lower Germanic Limes, beyond the border of the empire, tells us that the Romans did not perceive the Limes as the end of their Empire," Stevens told Live Science in an email. The fort was likely a temporary marching camp, which troops used for only a few days or weeks, according to a statement from Utrecht University. It's also possible that the camp was a stopover on the way to another camp about a day's march away. Constructing the Limes, a project led by Utrecht University, aims to understand how the Roman border functioned and to unearth temporary Roman camps north of the boundary. Related: Remains of 1,600-year-old Roman fort unearthed in Turkey As a part of the investigation, Jens Goeree, an archaeology student at Saxion University of Applied Sciences, developed a computer program to help predict the location of temporary Roman camps in Veluwe, a region of nature reserves filled with woodlands, grasslands and lakes. This program was based on probability and used data from elevation maps and lidar (light detection and ranging), a technique in which a machine shoots lasers from an aircraft over a site and measures the reflected waves to map the landscape below. "He reconstructed possible routes of the Roman army across the Veluwe area, calculating the number of kilometers an army could travel per day," Stevens said. The program also took into account roads and water availability, and looked for the "typical playing card-shaped camps" that Romans constructed, she said. The computer program didn't disappoint: It led them to the site in Hoog Buurlo within the Veluwe in 2023. In January 2025, the team visited the site to dig archaeological trenches and confirm that the site actually held an ancient fort, according to a statement. The fort was large — 9 acres (3.6 hectares) — and shaped like a rectangle with rounded corners. It had a V-shaped ditch that was 6.6 feet (2 meters) deep, a 10-foot-wide (3 m) earthen wall, and several entrances, Stevens said. However, the team found only a few artifacts at the site, including a fragment of Roman military armor. "The limited number of finds is not surprising as the camp was only in use for a short period of time (days, weeks) and the soldiers would have traveled light," Stevens said. But by examining the armor and comparing the newfound site to a camp found in 1922 at another site in the Netherlands, the team dated the newly discovered temporary camp to the second century A.D., Stevens said. The region north of the limes was likely an important place to take cattle, hides and even enslaved people. The people who lived in the area, the Frisii and the Chamavi, already had ties with the Romans. "The Frisians were generally on good terms with the Romans," as they traded with them, Stevens said. Historical sources mention a treaty in which the Frisians paid taxes in the form of cow hides, and they also provided soldiers for the auxiliary troops and members of Nero's (ruled A.D. 54 to 68) imperial bodyguard.

'London boroughs have a responsibility to open more spaces for e-bikes'
Six years ago, Agustin Guilisasti was living in west London and studying for a master's in data science across the city at South Bank University. The Chilean had only envisaged staying in London for a year, but instead sensed a 'big opportunity' with bike travel after becoming frustrated with expensive cycle hire options at the time. Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs – Guilisasti's grandfather set up Concha y Toro, the largest wine-growing company in Latin America – he had been part of the founding team at Cabify, the unicorn ride-hailing firm which was the first in its sector to offset carbon emissions. With a sustainability angle in mind, Guilisasti, along with two co-founders, PR expert Caroline Seton and marketing guru Michael Stewart, launched micromobility start-up Human Forest. 'It was cheaper than Lime and the Tube and was affordable for everyone. There was no excuse not to use e-bikes,' says Guilisasti. In 2020, the company tested 200 bikes in Islington, north London, and growth has sped along to five years later with 15,000 currently on London's streets. Billed as the capital's most affordable e-bike provider and now called Forest, the company provides over one million customers across 14 boroughs. According to data, Londoners are now taking 1.33 million cycling trips every day, up by over a quarter since pre-COVID levels, while shared e-bike trips at industry leader Lime and Forest account for one in six rides into the capital. Yet, says Guilisasti, the issue of e-bike parking has remained stagnant. Dame Joan Collins recently took to social media to lambast 'loutish' Lime e-bike riders blocking pavements, while councils are slowly introducing compulsory bay-only parking models following agreements with hire companies. Guilisasti says it has incentives for riders to park in specific spots with the lure of extra minutes and uses AI to predict where the best locations are for both consumers and London itself. 'We know where they [bikes] are and where there are too many of them,' he adds. Lime hasn't done that well and we are paying as an industry a little bit because of that. There is a responsibility for the boroughs also to open more space.' The Chilean native says he is 'excited' over the recent news from the London mayor that part of Oxford Street will see a car ban and also highlights how Forest e-bikes are available through the cycle-to-work scheme. Employees can take up an offer of less than £1 per day. Forest employs 71 staff and around 300 agency seasonal staff through the year. Meanwhile, the company's mission is also laid bare on its website, where an asterisk takes centre stage in 'c*r' to facilitate a shift away from vehicles in London. 'We are trying to simulate each time you ride on a Forest, you save 'x' amount of CO2," adds Guilisasti. "We are trying step by step to ensure it is better for the city, users and the planet.' Forest, which says it recycles almost 70% of broken bike parts, has raised a total of £25m in investment to date, while revenues have jumped from £7.4m in 2023 to nearly £30m last year. Guilisasti forecasts revenues to double this year. Revenue lines include brand tie-ups for advertising on Forest's app, the latest partnership being Deliveroo, with the food delivery giant's logo featuring on e-bikes and video adverts active on the app. 'We have done things differently to our competitors and that has helped give us profitability,' says Guilisasti. 'We are made in London but for the rest of the world we are doing alliances which makes more sense for now,' says Guilisasti, after Forest had tendered to bring its model to Paris earlier this year. 'Our plan is to expand operations to the west of London. We need to put all our effort into growing in London and become one of the biggest players. 'From day one we have had sustainable mobility for everyone and we have kept to that mission.' How to build a brand for longevity My advice is to find something that generates value to the users. The reason why people love Forest is that it's affordable, sustainable and we are doing something a little bit different to the rest. Pedal, pedal, pedal. You need to be clear of your mission and to continue believing in it and if you have a value behind it. Don't try to reinvent the wheel – be simple. Try to do things that are win-win. If you have a product or service where everyone wins you won't need to spend money investing in the users. We have spent almost zero in acquisition and behind that we have something in our brand that is good for consumers. Relationships in life are everything.
