Twin Proba-3 spacecraft create artificial solar eclipse

Paris: First came Solar Orbiter, the European Space Agency and NASA mission that revealed the sun's poles for the first time in early June.
Then came Proba-3, less than a week later. It's another European mission, launched from India in December 2024, to observe the solar corona — the outer atmosphere of the sun.
To do that, Proba-3 achieved yet another first.
The mission consists of two spacecraft flying 150 metres (490 feet) apart. Together, they performed a millimeter-precision flying maneuver so that one cast a shadow over the other — creating an artificial solar eclipse.
It allowed Proba-3 to block out the fierce face of the sun, leaving only its surrounding corona in view. No other spacecraft has observed the sun's corona as close to the solar rim.
Why scientists are interested in the solar corona
Scientists are somewhat baffled by the solar corona, and there are relatively few opportunities to observe it in its entirety.
The solar corona has three distinct regions: the high corona, low corona and a gap in between. Though there are instruments to study the high corona and the low coronas, the gap is usually only possible to see from Earth during a natural solar eclipse.
Another mystery: The solar corona is much hotter than the sun at its surface.
Temperatures in the corona can reach higher than 1.1 million degrees Celsius (almost 2 million degrees Fahrenheit). The surface of the sun, however, rests at a cool 5,500 °C (around 10,000 °F). Perhaps stranger still, the sun's core is a blistering 15 million °C.
Astronomers think that because the solar corona is far from the surface — and reaches far into space — it should be cooler, not hotter.
Proba-3: A test of new space technology
Proba-3's two spacecraft — Occulter and Coronagraph — create artificial solar eclipses every 19 hours and 36 minutes in orbit and hold their precision flying formation for six hours.
Conventional telescopes would be blinded by the sun's light, unable to see the corona. But the Occulter blocks the light accurately. With a disc measuring just 1.4 metres (4.5 feet), it casts a mere eight centimetre (3.15-inch) wide shadow — enough to create an artificial eclipse.
"It is exciting to see these stunning images validate our technologies," said Dietmar Pilz, ESA director of technology, said in a press release on Monday.
They fly autonomously, using star trackers that help them recognise constellations and GPS for further positioning.
New ways of seeing the sun on the rise
Astronomers are quickly gaining new insights into the sun. In early June 2025, ESA and NASA released the first images of the solar poles as captured by the Solar Orbiter.
The Solar Orbiter uses a newly designed orbit to see the poles and gathers data on the sun's magnetic field, solar cycle and how solar weather works.
"The sun's poles are literally terra incognita," Sami Solanki, of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, said in an ESA press release on June 11.
NASA's Parker Solar Probe became the first spacecraft to fly through the solar corona in 2021. The probe was built to face the sun's heat and radiation and deliver some of the closest observations of our star.
The Proba-3 mission also aims to improve scientific understanding of solar weather, such as coronal mass ejections and solar storms. Extreme solar weather can affect telecommunications satellites and power grids on Earth.

Florida: Axiom 4 mission aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft successfully docked at the International Space Station on Thursday. The Dragon spacecraft was ahead of schedule, autonomously docking at 4:05 pm (IST) to the space-facing port of the space station's Harmony module. NASA Flight Engineers Anne McClain and Nichole Ayers monitored Dragon's automated approach and docking manoeuvres. The Ax-4 crew will be welcomed by the seven-member Expedition 73 team and will now take part in a safety briefing. Former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, ESA (European Space Agency) astronauts Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland, and Tibor Kapu of Hungary lifted off at Noon IST on June 25, on the SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The astronauts plan to spend about two weeks aboard the orbiting laboratory, conducting a mission comprised of science, outreach, and commercial activities. The mission is sending the first ISRO astronaut to the station as part of a joint effort between NASA and the Indian space agency. The private mission also carries the first astronauts from Poland and Hungary to stay aboard the space station. Earlier, in a live interaction from aboard the spacecraft, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, serving as the mission pilot, described the launch as "magical" and reflected on his journey. "I am thrilled to be here with my fellow astronauts--what a ride it was. Honestly, as I sat in the capsule 'Grace' on the launchpad yesterday after 30 days of quarantine, all I could think was: just go. When the launch finally happened, it was something else entirely. You're pushed back into the seat--and then suddenly, there's silence. You're just floating in the vacuum, and it's magical," Shukla said. He expressed gratitude to the mission team, calling the experience a "collective achievement." "I truly appreciate the efforts of every individual who made this journey possible. It's not just a personal accomplishment--it belongs to all of us," he said. The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Centre at noon IST on Wednesday with Shukla, Whitson, Uznanski-Wisniewski, and Kapu onboard. The Ax-4 team will remain aboard the ISS for up to 14 days, engaging in science experiments, outreach, and commercial work. This marks Axiom Space's most research-intensive mission yet, with NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) jointly conducting experiments on muscle regeneration, edible microalgae growth, survival of aquatic microorganisms, and human interaction with digital displays in microgravity.

New Delhi: The French Embassy in India on Wednesday congratulated the country on a historic achievement, as Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla embarked on a journey to the International Space Station as part of Axiom Mission 4. Group Captain Shukla, an Indian Air Force officer, is part of the international crew aboard Axiom Mission 4, launched earlier in the day. His journey marks a historic milestone for India, as he is now the second Indian to go to space. The embassy highlighted the collaboration between France and India on the Gaganyaan program, India's first human spaceflight mission. "Congratulations, India, as Gp Capt Shubhanshu Shukla becomes the first Indian to visit @ISS_Research, piloting the historic Axiom Mission 4!" the French Embassy stated. "France is collaborating on Gaganyaan, India's first human spaceflight program, by contributing to scientific and medical preparations." CAPE CANAVERAL: A US commercial mission carrying crew from India, Poland and Hungary blasted off to the International Space Station on Wednesday, taking astronauts from these countries to space for the first time in decades. Axiom Mission 4, or Ax-4, launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 2:31 am, with a brand-new SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule riding atop a Falcon 9 rocket. The vehicle is scheduled to dock with the orbital lab on Thursday at approximately 11:00 GMT and remain there for up to 14 days. Aboard the spacecraft were pilot Shubhanshu Shukla of India; mission specialists Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary; and commander Peggy Whitson of the United States, a former NASA astronaut who now works for the company Axiom Space, which organizes private spaceflights, among other things. The last time India, Poland or Hungary sent people to space, their current crop of astronauts had not yet been born — and back then they were called cosmonauts, as they all flew on Soviet missions before the fall of the Iron Curtain. Shukla became the first Indian in space since Rakesh Sharma, an air force pilot who traveled to the Salyut 7 space station in 1984 as part of a Soviet-led initiative to help allied countries access space. India's space agency, ISRO, sees this flight as a key stepping stone toward its own maiden crewed mission, planned for 2027 under the Gaganyaan programme, meaning "sky craft" in Hindi. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the successful launch of the Ax-4 space mission. "He (Shukla) carries with him the wishes, hopes and aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians. Wish him and other astronauts all the success!" he wrote on X. All three countries are footing the bill for their astronauts. Hungary announced in 2022 it was paying $100 million for its seat, according to India and Poland have not disclosed how much they are spending. "We've got this! Poland has reached for the stars," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on X, alongside a video himself watching the launch on a screen at the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw. "Who knows how many future Polish astronauts watched Slawosz's launch with me? Everyone was very excited and very proud," Tusk said in another post, which included a photo of him seated next to several children at the science centre. The Ax-4 launch comes after multiple issues delayed the mission, originally slated for early June. It also follows an explosive online spat between US President Donald Trump and SpaceX chief Elon Musk, the world's richest person and, until recently, Trump's ally and advisor. — AFP
