The 4,096-kilometre border with Bangladesh has become a frontline for counter-radicalisation efforts. Indian agencies have detected increased chatter from extremist groups attempting to radicalise youth in West Bengal and Assam. The Border Security Force has responded by deploying surveillance drones, tightening fencing, and increasing patrols.The situation is further complicated by reports of Pakistan's ISI embedding itself in the chaos, allegedly training Bangladeshi youth and supplying arms to build anti-India networks. UN concerned by Taliban's arrest of Afghan women and girls for dress code violations
The United Nations on Monday expressed concern about the Taliban's arrest of Afghan women and girls for their alleged failure to comply with the authorities' dress code. In May 2022, the Taliban government issued a decree calling for women to show only their eyes and recommending they wear a head-to-toe burqa. The Taliban, which returned to power in 2021, has cracked down on the way women dress and behave in public, notably through morality laws forbidding them to show their faces outside the home. The UN mission in Afghanistan said it was concerned by the arrest of 'numerous' women and girls in Kabul between July 16 and 19, who authorities claimed had not followed instructions on wearing the hijab, or the Islamic headscarf. 'These incidents serve to further isolate women and girls, contribute to a climate of fear, and erode public trust,' the mission added, without details including the number of arrests or the ages and where they have been held. The UN mission urged the Taliban government to ' rescind policies and practices ' that restrict women and girls' human rights and fundamental freedoms, particularly the ban on education beyond sixth grade. A Taliban representative was not immediately available for comment. In January 2024, the country's Vice and Virtue Ministry said it had arrested women in the Afghan capital for wearing 'bad hijab.' A ministry spokesman, Abdul Ghafar Farooq, did not say how many women were arrested or what constituted bad hijab. The UN mission said at the time it was looking into claims of ill treatment of the women and extortion in exchange for their release. The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021 following the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces. Since then, the Taliban administration has sought international recognition while enforcing its interpretation of Islamic law. In July, Russia became the only country to grant formal recognition.

"Terror Unleashed On...": Trinamool-BJP Tug-Of-War On Bengali Pride
Kolkata: Every year, July 21 is marked as Shahid Diwas or Martyrs' Day by the Trinamool Congress to remember those who died in 1993 during a protest by West Bengal Youth Congress under Mamata Banerjee. Today, party workers and supporters reached Kolkata's Dharamtala to listen to Ms Banerjee. With elections scheduled early next year, the Trinamool Congress' pitch was louder and more pointed. The Chief Minister of West Bengal claimed that migrant workers from West Bengal are being targeted in BJP-ruled states because of the language they speak. This came three days after Prime Minister Modi addressed a rally on July 18. "Terror has been unleashed on the Bengali language. Over 1,000 have been detained, sent to jail in BJP-ruled states like Odisha, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh. This is a conspiracy against the Bengali community. Bengal will not tolerate this," Ms Banerjee claimed. Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing a rally in Durgapur, claimed it's only the BJP-led NDA that has given respect to the Bengali language by bestowing the classical language tag. He dismissed claims of Bengalis being targeted in states where his party is in power. "For the BJP, Bengali ashmita is paramount. Wherever there's a BJP government, Bengalis are respected. Bengali language is respected. We will not allow this conspiracy against Bengali pride to succeed. The BJP is the only party that truly respects it," the Prime Minister said. With Bengali identity and pride at the core of the political battle between the two parties in the state, the Chief Minister also promised a Durga Maa temple in West Bengal during her speech, just like the Jagannath Dham inaugurated this year in Digha. On the other hand, the BJP has appointed Samik Bhattacharya, a "bangali bhodrolok", to lead the party this poll season. So much so, the BJP is raising Jai Maa Kali slogans instead of their popular Jai Sri Ram cry in the state that worships powerful goddesses like Maa Kali and Maa Durga. Speaking in Kolkata, party's national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee said," When you force the party to raise Jai Maa Kali slogan instead of Jai Sri Ram, you know we have won half the battle."
