Woman, her minor children abducted at gunpoint from M.P. found in Haryana; prime accused, six others held

The Hindu22-06-2025
The Madhya Pradesh Police on Sunday (June 22, 2025) found a woman and her two minor daughters, allegedly abducted at gunpoint from their home in Chhatarpur district, from Haryana's Bhiwani, police officers said, adding that a total of seven men, including the prime accused, have also been arrested.
The alleged abduction took place on Saturday in Chhatarpur's Sumedi village, under Lavkushnagar police station limits, when about a dozen men, carrying firearms and sticks, took the woman and her daughters, aged 7 and 5, from their home in broad daylight at around 12.30 p.m.
The men had also thrashed the woman's husband Hariram Pal and opened fires in the air before leaving in a car and motorbikes. A video of the incident has also gone viral on social media.
Lavkushnagar sub-divisional police officer (SDOP) Naveen Dubey told The Hindu that the woman and children were found with the prime accused, identified as Sanjay Rajput, who had taken them to Bhiwani after the abduction.
Mr. Dubey said that six more men, involved in the incident, have been arrested from different parts of Chhatarpur, while at least four police teams are currently conducting raids to nab others. 'All remaining suspects have been identified,' he said.
'Based on the inputs from the men arrested from here, we traced Sanjay Rajput to Haryana's Bhiwani and a team was sent there. The local police there helped us find them,' Mr. Dubey said, that the accused and the three victims will leave from Haryana after finishing the formalities at the local police station.
'They are expected to arrive here [Chhatarpur] on Monday morning after which we will question Rajput and the woman,' he said.
Mr. Dubey said that the neighbours and family members of the woman have revealed that she and Mr. Rajput had been in a relationship for about two years.
'The family had known about this for a while and had asked him [Mr. Rajput] to stop coming to their house. They even had some disputes over the past few months and had a fight last week, after which he planned the abduction,' the SDOP said.
Mr. Dubey, however, said that it is yet to be ascertained whether the woman had anything to do with the planning or if she 'went wilfully' with the accused.
'We will question her about these aspects once they reach here,' he said.
After the video went viral, Chhatarpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Agam Jain had formed five teams to trace the victims and had also declared a reward of Rs10,000 on the accused.
A case under relevant charges, including kidnapping, attempt to murder and assault, as per the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as under the Arms Act had been filed on Saturday, Mr. Dubey said.
The police have also seized at least four vehicles involved in the abduction.

Mistaken bank transfers in UAE? Using or returning money could be a crime

Authorities in the UAE have raised alarms about a rising type of scam that exploits people's good intentions. In a recent warning, Dubai Police revealed how fraudsters are now sending money to victims' bank accounts, only to follow up with emotional pleas asking for it back. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In an advisory video shared by Dubai Police, a man is shown receiving an SMS that Dh10,000 ($2,723) has been deposited into his account. Just moments later, he receives a call from someone claiming the money was transferred 'accidentally' and is urgently needed for medical treatment. The caller pleads for its immediate return and provides a different account number for the victim to transfer the money to. Moved by the urgency and believing the story, the man transfers the amount to the stranger. However, two days later, his bank notifies him that his account has been flagged for a policy violation, revealing he had unknowingly fallen victim to a scam. Dubai Police: 'Never Transfer Money to Strangers' Dubai Police cautioned residents against such tactics, describing them as increasingly diverse and sophisticated. Authorities stressed that it is critical for the public to remain vigilant and never send money to unknown individuals, even if the sender claims to have made a mistake. Instead of acting immediately on such emotional appeals, residents are urged to report any unexpected or suspicious transactions to 901, the Dubai Police helpline for non-emergencies. What To Do If You Receive an Unexpected Transfer Under UAE law, receiving money by mistake does not entitle the recipient to keep it. Using those funds, even unknowingly, could result in serious consequences, including criminal charges such as unjust enrichment or money laundering. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Here are the official steps residents should follow: 1. Do Not Use or Withdraw the Funds Leave the money untouched in your account. Using it, even if you believe it was a mistake, may be considered a crime. 2. Contact Your Bank Immediately Report the transaction to your bank's customer service or speak to a branch manager. Request an official investigation and keep documentation (emails, chat records, or a reference number). 3. Request to Flag Your Account Temporarily This protects you if the funds are later tied to fraud or illegal activity. Your bank may reverse the transaction if it is found to have been an error. 4. File a Police Report Especially if the sender contacts you persistently or aggressively. Visit the nearest police station or use the Dubai Police app to report the case. 5. Do Not Engage with Unknown Senders If someone contacts you asking for the money back, do not make any transfers yourself. Legitimate reversals are handled strictly through the banking system, not private or third-party transfers.

Supreme Court grants Tamil Nadu MLA Jagan Moorthy anticipatory bail in abduction case

The Supreme Court Monday granted anticipatory bail to Tamil Nadu MLA M Jagan Moorthy in the case of the alleged abduction of a teenager in the state's Thiruvallur district, and said 'the matter requires consideration.' Issuing notice to the Tamil Nadu Police, the bench of Justices Manoj Mishra and N Kotiswar Singh directed, 'In the meantime, if the petitioner is arrested in connection with FIR No.101/2025 registered at PS – Thiruvalangadu (renumbered as C.R. No.1/2025), he shall be released on personal bond of Rs.25,000/-, subject to the undertaking that he shall cooperate in the investigation and will not threaten the witnesses or tamper the evidence.' Moorthy, the Kilvaithinankuppam AIADMK MLA, approached the top court after the Madras High Court dismissed his plea on June 27. Appearing for him, Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra submitted, 'There is no dispute that the abductee was recovered and not from the possession or control of the applicant.' Luthra contended the legislator 'has been implicated for malafide reasons by alleging that he had a hand in the abduction' and that 'even assuming that the applicant interacted with one of the parties to the dispute, that may be considered for the purposes of settling the issue.' Luthra added, 'In any event, no custodial interrogation is required.' The Madras High Court also ordered the arrest of H M Jayaram, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Tamil Nadu, in the matter, but it was set aside by the Supreme Court. Moorthy and Jayaram were 'implicated' in the May 10 abduction of an 18-year-old boy in Thiruvallur. The boy was reportedly abducted by a group seeking information about his elder brother, who had married a young woman from Theni district against her family's wishes.
