BMTC rolls out ‘OnBoard' assistive device for visually impaired city bus commuters
The technology, developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi in partnership with the Raised Lines Foundation (RLF), is being implemented with the support of Continental Automotive Components India Pvt. Ltd. and Enable India, according to BMTC.
Officials said that it aims to eliminate the need for visually impaired individuals to rely on bystanders at bus stops, thus reducing mental stress and improving self-confidence.
Speaking about the initiative, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said, 'The OnBoard system is a progressive step toward empowering visually impaired citizens to travel with dignity and independence.'
How it works
The OnBoard solution uses a two-part communication system: a handheld remote with the commuter and a receiver unit installed in BMTC buses, fixed on the lower front glass near the entry door.
When a bus approaches, the visually impaired commuter presses a 'Find' button on the remote, prompting the bus to announce its route number through a speaker. If the bus matches the desired route, the commuter presses 'Select,' alerting the driver and conductor that a visually impaired passenger is preparing to board. 'This ensures a longer halt for safer boarding. The same method is used for disembarkation as the passenger nears their destination,' Mr. Reddy said.
Some of the key features of the device include: Alerting users when a selected bus is within a 30-meter radius, ensuring safe and guided boarding and alighting, weather-resistant design, tested for durability in rain, dust, and heat.
Pilot project shows promise
The pilot project began with 25 BMTC buses operating on routes 401K and 242B, which visually impaired passengers frequently use. 'As part of the pilot, 500 users received hands-on training, with 25 individuals actively testing the system. Feedback from these users was overwhelmingly positive. Many reported increased confidence, less anxiety while commuting, and a significantly improved experience,' the Minister said.
Encouraged by this, BMTC approved the installation of OnBoard devices in 500 buses across Bengaluru, with the next 100 devices being installed from June 2025. Full deployment is expected by August 2025.
Implementation strategy and routes covered
According to BMTC, initial integration of the device required several modifications to ensure compatibility with existing bus systems. After technical adjustments and server integration, installation began on 125 diesel buses across five routes: 401K (Yelahanka to Kengeri), 401R (Yelahanka to Kengeri), 401M (Yeshwanthpur to Kengeri), 410FA (Yeshwanthpur to Banashankari TTMC), 410FG (Yeshwanthpur to Nayandahalli Metro Station).
According to BMTC officials, this initiative has not only earned praise locally but has also begun attracting interest from other states exploring similar solutions. 'We're seeing a national shift in how we approach public transport infrastructure for persons with disabilities,' said an official from BMTC.
Prashanth Doreswamy, president and CEO of Continental, said, 'We believe that mobility must be inclusive and accessible. This partnership with BMTC is a testament to what technology can do when it is driven by a sense of social responsibility.'
The Minister said, 'We urge other transport agencies and departments across the country to take note and implement similar solutions to ensure no one is left behind.'

The Union government should allow the State Road Transport Corporations (SRTCs) to recruit drivers for the efficient operation of the new fleet of 100 electric buses each that the Centre is set to provide for Mangaluru and five other cities in Karnataka, said Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy in Mangaluru on Sunday. Speaking at the inauguration of the automated driving test track in Phajir, near Mangaluru, Mr. Reddy welcomed the move of the Centre to sanction 100 electric buses each to Mangaluru, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Mysuru and Shivamogga. The buses aimed at reducing pollution were set to be released to bus manufacturing companies. The companies were being asked to maintain the buses and also arrange drivers on their own, while the SRTCs will have to post their conductors and also provide space for depots for parking and maintenance of buses. For the efficient operation of electric buses, it would be beneficial to directly allocate these buses to SRTCs, enabling them to recruit their drivers. The State corporations should also be provided with a concession in the GST. 'We have written to the Centre. Except for the demand to allow us to recruit our drivers, the Centre has favourably responded to our demands,' the Minister said. Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP, said the State government should take action at the earliest to complete the process of allotting land for setting up depots for electric buses. The introduction of electric buses will greatly transform commuting in the city by using government buses. He asked the Minister to take steps to have more buses on inter-State routes from Mangaluru, especially between Mangaluru and Kasaragod. U.T. Khader, Speaker and Mangaluru MLA, also spoke.

Karnataka's ambitious Shakti scheme, which offers free bus travel for women across the state, is set to achieve a significant milestone, 500 crore tickets issued, within just two years of its launch, reported The Times of India. It is expected to be crossed by July 14, with over 497 crore free tickets issued as of July 11, as per the publication. In addition, 10,000 new staff are being recruited to support the scheme's growing scale, including 1,000 appointments on compassionate grounds. The report further stated that the daily bus ridership has surged from around ₹85 lakh before the scheme to over ₹1 crore currently. The scheme's popularity has also been reflected in month-wise data, during its first month, 10 crore free tickets were issued at a cost of approximately ₹250 crore. By the second month, the figure had doubled to 20 crore tickets, costing around ₹453 crore. Ridership hit a peak in May 2025, when over 22 crore tickets were issued in a single month, driving costs up to ₹670 crore. Officials attribute this spike partly to a fare hike in January 2025, which made free travel even more attractive. The Shakti scheme was the first of five pre-poll guarantees implemented by the Congress government after its 2023 electoral win.

Government to promote private players for rare earth magnet production, says G Kishan Reddy
Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy on Saturday said that the government has introduced Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes to encourage participation of private players in rare earth permanent magnets production. The Centre has initiated PLI schemes, which offer financial incentives tied directly to measurable outcomes and have been designed to boost domestic manufacturing. While talking to ANI, the Union Minister said, "For this, the Indian government has also started some PLI schemes to encourage it. We are paying attention to this subject. The Prime Minister has continuously discussed this subject. Recently, during his visit to 5 countries, discussions were held with different countries on this subject. The raw material of rare earth is also available in smaller quantities in India. Importing raw materials, processing them, and manufacturing permanent magnets for various applications, including cell phones, space technology, and defence, creates a huge demand. The Indian government is working seriously for this. This scheme has also been brought under it." Additionally, the Minister also highlighted India's shift in sourcing strategy, noting that India was previously entirely dependent on China for rare-earth permanent magnets. India, earlier, relied entirely on imports from China for the permanent magnets, the Minister said. He added that the Non-Ferrous Materials Technology Development Centre (NFTDC), supported by the Ministry of Mining in Hyderabad, has successfully prepared a permanent magnet processing unit equipped with the necessary machinery. The central government plans to provide the technology developed by NFTDC to private factories for manufacturing. "We used to be 100 per cent dependent on China for permanent magnets of the rare earths. But recently, China has refused to supply. With this view, the Indian government is making efforts for permanent magnet manufacturing. Our mining ministry's institute in Hyderabad has made efforts and prepared a permanent magnet processing unit with equipment. After three to four months, we will try to manufacture permanent magnets by giving the technology to different private factories," Reddy told ANI. In April 2024, China announced that it would impose export controls on certain rare earth-related items, triggering a global supply shortage, including in India. In the light of rare earth magnet production, on Friday, Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) , welcomed the central government initiatives to ramp up rare earth magnet production in India, particularly the incentives the latter is earmarking for. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the setting up of the Critical Mineral Mission in the Union Budget for 2024-25 on July 23, 2024. The Union Cabinet in January 2025 approved the launch of the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM) with an expenditure of Rs 16,300 crore and an expected investment of Rs 18,000 crore by Public Sector Undertakings.
