Police seize RM10.5 million contraband in Kuching raids
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim confirmed the arrests of three individuals—two locals and an Indonesian national—aged between 30 and 64. The seized items, valued at RM10,500,028, included large quantities of liquor and cigarettes.
The raids, codenamed Op Taring Alpha 1 and Op Taring Alpha 2, were executed with support from the Sarawak Brigade General Operations Force (PGA). At the first location, authorities recovered 648 litres of liquor, 90,000 white cigarettes, 51,200 kretek cigarettes, and a mobile phone. The second raid yielded 4,190,000 white cigarettes, 24,320 kretek cigarettes, a van, and another mobile phone.
Azmi highlighted that since January 1 this year, Bukit Aman KDNKA has conducted 155 operations nationwide, leading to 236 arrests and seizures worth RM443.85 million. He urged public cooperation in reporting smuggling activities, stressing their economic and security risks.
'Smuggling activities and the sale of untaxed goods not only impact the nation's revenue, but could also pose a threat to border security if not tackled comprehensively,' said Azmi. - Bernama

Azmi said authorities seized 648 litres of liquor, 90,000 white cigarettes of various brands, 51,200 kretek cigarettes and a mobile phone at the first location. Bus accident in Ayer Hitam involved 45 Indonesian workers
BATU PAHAT: A tour bus transporting 45 Indonesian plantation workers was involved in a serious accident at Kilometer 80.7 of the North-South Expressway near Ayer Hitam early this morning. The workers had just arrived from Lombok, Indonesia, and were en route to Johor Bahru when the collision occurred. According to Jati Heri Winarto, Consul of the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Johor Bahru, the group consisted of 55 workers who landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport around 9 pm. While 10 workers took a van, the remaining 45 boarded the ill-fated bus. The accident, which also involved two lorries, resulted in two fatalities. The victims were identified as Hidirman, 43, and Zulhadi, 44, who died at the scene. Another worker, Nusiah, suffered severe injuries, including the loss of her left hand and fractured ribs, and remains under treatment at Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital. Fourteen other workers sustained minor injuries and were discharged after receiving medical attention. Firefighters confirmed that the crash occurred around 12:27 am, leaving two dead and 16 injured. Jati Heri stated that the Indonesian Consulate is coordinating the repatriation of the deceased and seeking compensation through the Social Security Organisation. Meanwhile, Batu Pahat District Police Chief ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani explained that the bus collided with a tanker lorry being towed by another lorry. The bus driver suffered shoulder, rib, and hand injuries, while five passengers reported head pain. The drivers of the lorries and other passengers escaped unharmed. Authorities are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. - Bernama

Ruling on civil servant's bribery appeal August 20

KOTA KINABALU (July 3): The High Court here has fixed August 20 to deliver its decision on an appeal by a civil servant who was convicted of using his position for personal gain. Justice Datuk Celestina Stuel Galid set the date to rule on the appeal filed by Herwan Malik, who is seeking to overturn his conviction and sentence handed down by the Sessions Court. Herwan was sentenced on August 29, 2023, to 12 months' imprisonment and fined RM10,000, in default three months' jail, for each of two charges involving abuse of power for bribes. The Sessions Court had ordered the 24-month total jail term to run concurrently. Following his conviction after a full trial, Herwan was granted a stay of execution pending the outcome of his appeal and is currently out on the original bail amount set for both charges. The 39-year-old was found guilty of abusing his position by certifying the selection of a wholesale company to carry out road maintenance works in Kota Marudu. The company was allegedly owned by his sister. The offences took place at the Kota Marudu District Office on February 28, 2013, and April 30, 2014. Thirteen prosecution witnesses were called during the trial, while Herwan, represented by counsel Shahlan Jufri, was the sole defence witness.
