First Nintendo Switch 2 unboxing has already happened but there's a catch
We're just over a week away from the Switch 2's launch on Thursday, June 5 and some retailers have already received stock in advance of the big day.
Like all console launches, the problem with sending stock to retailers is that it virtually ensures that leaks will happen – especially as some shops appear to be leaving Switch 2 consoles in public view.
It turns out, Nintendo has concocted a plan to counter this concern, by making the console useless until a day one patch is released.
This detail was confirmed after someone on YouTube posted a video showing them unboxing the Switch 2 console. The video has since been taken down (although it's been shared elsewhere), but in the comments, they claimed the console is 'locked' and 'needs update to function'.
Someone else supported this claim to gaming deals guru Wario64, stating that when they try to boot up an original Switch game on the Switch 2, a message reads: 'Please connect to the internet and update your system.'
While it's unclear if this update is required in order to play Switch 2 games, it's safe to assume that's the case considering no leaked footage of Mario Kart World has (at the time of writing, at least) made its way online.
If there are restrictions on how Switch 2 works without online connectivity then that is going to be very poorly received by fans, but that would be quite out of keeping with Nintendo's usual approach. More Trending
So far there's no indication that physical copies of games need any kind of online connection to work but no one's going to know for sure until next week.
It's possible the update mentioned is tied to backwards compatibility. Nintendo has already said some original Switch games, including Doom Eternal and Pizza Tower, require an update to function on the Switch 2, which will be rolled out 'by launch or shortly after'.
Either way, whether intentional or not, this seems to mean that anyone who does get a Switch 2 before launch won't be able to play the system early.
Aside from Mario Kart World, the Switch 2's launch line-up includes Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, Split Fiction, and many others.

Microsoft users warned passwords will be deleted for millions in a matter of day
If you've ever used Microsoft Authenticator to manage your passwords, it's time to export them or risk them being lost forever. The app is most commonly used for two-factor authentication, using face ID to log into email or company systems, for example. But the app, which has been downloaded over 100 million times on the Google Play store alone, was also used to store passwords with autofill until this month. Microsoft now says 'the password era is ending', urging people to turn to alternative ways of logging in, and saying the app will no longer support passwords. It's partly our fault, given we keep reusing pet names, swear words, 12345, and 'password' as not-so-foolproof keys to our kingdom. Before you panic that the company is removing support for passwords entirely across all its services, they're not – or at least, not yet. But they won't be letting you keep your list in the Authenticator app, and data will be deleted next month. If you want to keep using Microsoft to store passwords, you can use their Edge browser which will keep them all logged and ready. If you prefer a separate app so you can use passwords in Chrome, Safari, or another browser, it's time to export them so you still have access. June 2025: people were no longer able to save new passwords in Authenticator, and were shown a message warning them of coming changes. July 2025: you will not be able to use autofill with Authenticator. Payment information will be deleted. August 2025: your saved passwords will no longer be accessible in Authenticator and will be deleted. In a blog post in December last year, Microsoft said they block 7,000 attacks on passwords per second, 'almost double from a year ago', as well as an increase in phishing attacks to steal credentials by 146%. They said the reign of passwords is ending: 'Bad actors know it, which is why they're desperately accelerating password-related attacks while they still can.' They said the solution is passkeys, which 'offer an improved user experience by letting you sign in faster with your face, fingerprint, or PIN, but they also aren't susceptible to the same kinds of attacks as passwords'. If you prefer using Microsoft for your passwords, you can download the Edge app and then set it as your default password manager from Settings. In a support post, the company also set out steps you can take to export passwords to another app manager. More Trending They warned they will no longer be encrypted if you do this, so make sure to quickly delete the file after the passwords have been saved safely elsewhere. But you will need to do this before August 2025, as after this they will no longer be accessible, and any generated passwords not saved will be deleted. After years of rumours and speculation, Nintendo finally unveiled the Nintendo Switch 2 last month, marking the long-awaited follow-up to one of the bestselling consoles of all time. Complete with a larger 7.9in LCD display, sharper 1080p resolution, new Joy-Con 2 controllers, and more social GameChat features, the Switch 2 was always going to sell out. Unsurprisingly, demand has been through the roof. Stock vanished within minutes on launch day, and for weeks after, it's mostly been a case of chasing bundles and refreshing product pages. Even now, getting hold of the console isn't easy. That said, the situation is slowly improving. Restocks are becoming more frequent, bundles are sticking around longer, and it's no longer a battle to get one. If you're still trying to buy a Nintendo Switch 2, here's everything you need to know and where to buy one in the UK. Where to buy the Nintendo Switch 2 in the UK The Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle is currently in stock at several UK retailers. It's available immediately with same-day click‑and‑collect at both Currys and Smyths Toys. Amazon has it in stock, with delivery estimated by Friday, 11 July. EE is offering the bundle exclusively for existing customers, with delivery in 1–3 working days. ShopTo also has it available now, with next‑day delivery. Finally, Ebuyer is taking pre-orders for the bundle, with shipping scheduled for Wednesday, 30 July. Nintendo Switch 2 price and specs The Nintendo Switch 2 on its own costs £399.99, and the main bundle with Mario Kart World costs £429.99. Buying the bundle saves you £40 compared to picking up the game separately, so it's better value if you're planning to grab it anyway. The Switch 2 might look familiar, but there's a lot going on underneath. It's powered by a new custom Nvidia chip, so games don't just load faster, they look better and run more smoothly. You get 12GB of RAM (up from 4GB on the original Switch), and most of that goes straight into powering games, not just background stuff. The screen is still LCD, not OLED, but it's bigger at 7.9in and has 1080p resolution. It supports HDR and a 120Hz refresh rate. Colours pop more, and motion looks buttery-smooth in handheld mode. There's also DLSS upscaling built-in, so older games look better. Sadly, while it supports variable refresh rates, this doesn't work when docked – just in handheld mode. Nintendo Switch 2 games There are plenty of new Nintendo Switch 2 games to sink your teeth into. Mario Kart World is the big one, but you've also got upgraded versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, plus mammoth games like Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition that really test the console's muscle. Other games released on launch day included Hades 2, Split Fiction, Sonic X Shadow Generations, Street Fighter 6, Survival Kids and Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. You've also got Yakuza 0: Director's Cut, Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess, and Deltarune Chapters 1–4, plus more niche picks like Fantasy Life i and Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD. Civilization VII and No Man's Sky are here too, and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour acts as a mini showcase for the new hardware. On top of that, loads of older Nintendo titles have been patched with free performance updates, and Wind Waker, F-Zero GX and Soul Calibur II are now available through the new Switch Online GameCube library. We've already begun rounding up the best Nintendo Switch 2 games (so far). The redesigned Switch 2 Pro Controller has some big improvements over the original Switch Pro controller. It's a more traditional-looking gaming pad with better thumbsticks, extra durability, a new button for multiplayer social features, added shoulder buttons, and improved rumble effects. The Switch 2 camera lets you video chat with friends during multiplayer games. A few launch titles make use of it too, like Super Mario Party Jamboree, where it lets you appear inside minigames to balance Goombas on your head and sing karaoke songs with friends. The Switch 2 comes with 256GB of internal storage. This can quickly fill up with downloaded games, so it's worth investing in some added storage. Nintendo's official SanDisk microSD card comes with another 256GB of storage, with fast read and write speeds that work seamlessly with the Switch 2. Nintendo's official case includes a screen protector and cleaning cloth, with room inside for up to six game cards and two Joy-Con 2 straps. That's enough to take all your gear in the car or on the train, as well as protect it from dust and scratches.

This has been confirmed by an Epic Games employee via the Unreal Engine forums, who also assured that any queries submitted through their online forms will be attended to upon their return. The specifics of the update remain under wraps, but it's certain that it will address some bug fixes that have been lingering on the Fortnite community Trello board. Regardless, it's a welcome development for players that the game's team is back at work, crafting new content for their enjoyment. It's commendable that Epic Games has granted its team a well-deserved break, reinforcing the notion that what's beneficial for the developers is advantageous for the game.
