Lando Norris bounced back from a catastrophic weekend in Canada to win the Formula One Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday ahead of McLaren team-mate and championship leader Oscar Piastri.
Norris went out in Canada a fortnight ago after a collision with Piastri, but in Austria the British driver started from pole and led throughout the entire race to take his third victory of the season.
Piastri finished second and tops the drivers' standings 15 points ahead of Norris. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari completed the podium in third.
'It was a tough race, pushing the whole way through, tricky and tiring. A 1-2 is exactly what we wanted, and we did it so I'm happy,' Norris said.
Home team Red Bull meanwhile met disaster, with world champion Max Verstappen knocked out of the race in the first lap after an incident with Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes, and Yuki Tsunoda finishing 16th.
The race The start of the race was aborted after Carlos Sainz of Williams failed to get away during the formation lap.
His car was stuck in first gear and he only managed to get moving after being pushed by track marshals. Because the mechanics touched the car, Sainz had to pull into the pit lane but during this attempt his brakes caught fire which meant 'game over' for him.
The race started with a delay of around 20 minutes, and Norris and Piastri went wheel-to-wheel in the first lap, but the polesitter hung on.
Behind then, Antonelli locked up and hit Verstappen, who was trying to fight with the Ferraris for fourth and third places. Neither of them could continue the race.
The safety car was deployed but the top three remained unchanged at the restart.
The two title contenders had a tight battle in the early stages, with Piastri briefly taking the lead on lap 11, only for Norris to snatch it back immediately after.
Piastri tried another move on Norris on lap 20, but locked up and almost hit his team-mate. But even after getting a new set of tyres, Piastri faced traffic and couldn't close the gap to Norris to attack again.
'Intense. I hope it was good watching, as it was pretty hard work inside the car. I tried my absolute best, probably could have done a better job when I just got ahead. A good battle, probably pushed the limits a little far,' Piastri said.
There was a scare for the championship leader on lap 54 as he came out of the pits side by side with the Alpine of Franco Colapinto.
Piastri had to take evasive action to avoid a collision as Colapinto forced him off the track and into the grass, an offence that resulted in a five-second penalty for the Argentinian.
The rest of the top 10 Leclerc lamented that 'the pace today was not enough' to compete with McLaren but celebrated as Ferrari returned to the podium.
'I don't regret anything we did today, we did the maximum,' he said.
Team-mate Lewis Hamilton was right behind in fourth, followed by the Mercedes of George Russell and Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls.
Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso held on to claim seventh after a tight battle with Kick Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto in the final laps, but the Brazilian rookie still has a lot to celebrate as he took his first F1 points.
Kick Sauber had a second driver in the points with Nico Hülkenberg in ninth and Esteban Ocon of Haas completed the top 10.

Qatar interested in hosting ‘carbon-neutral' 2029 Club World Cup: Report
DPA Berlin Qatar is reportedly the latest country interested in hosting the next Club World Cup in 2029, which may then be a tournament in the European winter just like the 2022 World Cup. British paper The Guardian said on Saturday that Qatari officials 'have held talks with FIFA officials at the highest level' during the current edition in the United States and have 'indicated a desire to stage the next edition in four years' time.' The report said that Qatar pledges a carbon-neutral event because of short distances between venues which are to be the same ones used for the World Cup three years ago. The tournament in the US is under criticism over long distances between venues, the heat and storms which have led to several matches stopped, and also pitch conditions. Qatar's summer heat is even more intense which, if chosen, would mean that a Club World Cup there would be played in winter, possibly in December. The World Cup there took place mid-November to mid-December. European clubs may not be happy about another disruption of their season in such a scenario, but the US tournament comes at the end of their season amid player welfare concerns. A winter tournament would also either be just six months ahead of the 2030 World Cup, or if played in December 2028, half a year after Euro 2028 and the Copa America. Qatar are yet to make their interest official, while Spain and Morocco, two of the countries to host the 2030 World Cup, have each declared interest along with Brazil.

F1: McLaren's Norris cuts teammate Piastri's lead with win in Austria
Lando Norris has held off a race-long challenge from his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to win the Austrian Grand Prix and lift his Formula 1 title hopes. Norris and Piastri battled for the lead in the early stages of the race on Sunday with the Australian briefly in the lead before Norris took the position back. A rash lunge by Piastri nearly caused a collision soon after. Piastri lost ground at the pit stops and was run wide onto the grass by Alpine's Franco Colapinto while cutting through traffic. He soon made up ground on Norris but wasn't quite close enough to try overtaking. Over the radio, Norris called it a 'beautiful one-two' finish for the team. 'We had a great battle, that's for sure,' he added later. 'A lot of stress but a lot of fun. A nice battle, so well done to Oscar.' A two-horse race at the top More than ever this season, the title fight focuses on the two McLarens after defending champion Max Verstappen was hit by Kimi Antonelli on the opening lap, ending his race. Antonelli was later handed a three-place grid penalty for the next race. Overall leader Piastri leads second-placed Norris by 15 points with Verstappen still third but now 61 off the lead. Piastri apologised to McLaren for the near-collision between the two, which came one race after Norris collided with him in Canada. The Australian said he regretted not making more of his few seconds in the lead earlier in the race. 'I hope it was good watching because it was pretty hard work from the car,' Piastri said. 'I tried my absolute best and probably could have done a better job when I just got ahead momentarily. It was a good battle, a bit on the edge at times.' Ferrari strong with third and fourth Charles Leclerc was third for his third podium finish in four races, and his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton was fourth. George Russell, who won the last race in Canada, was fifth for Mercedes and Liam Lawson sixth for Racing Bulls in his best result of the season. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin held off Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto for seventh. The second Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg was ninth, and Esteban Ocon finished 10th for Haas. McLaren are 207 points clear of Ferrari – who moved back up to second in the absence of team boss Fred Vasseur, who had to return home for personal reasons – in the constructors championship. Round 12 of the F1 World Championship takes place next weekend at the British Grand Prix.
