Ranking every Big Ten football 2026 recruiting class by average player rating (July 6)
Those rankings did receive a major shift earlier this week when Oregon added five-star interior offensive lineman Immanuel Iheanacho. Iheanacho is the Ducks' third five-star commitment in the class. His addition sent the Ducks' relatively small class of 14 commitments up near the nation's top 10. When the cycle concludes later this year, none should be surprised if Oregon approaches the top five.
Notably, Oregon currently boasts the Big Ten's best average player rating (93.15). While different from 247Sports' national team rankings, which give significant weight to commit volume, average player rating is an important metric to use when comparing the conference's top-ranked groups.

The Minnesota Gophers football team has seen one of the best recruiting cycles in recent memory. Not only has head coach P.J. Fleck kept in-state talent home, but he has done a great job bring talent to Dinkytown. Minnesota has an important season ahead of them in that the schedule sets up favorably. Fleck wasn't heading towards contract uncertainty, athletic director Mark Coyle tacked on another year of security for his head football coach. The new extension keeps Fleck with the Minnesota Gophers at least through the 2030 season. 'Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck will get a one-year contract extension with increased retention bonuses, pending approval at the next Board of Regents meeting July 11…Under the new deal, Fleck's salary would remain $6 million, but he would receive a $1 million retention bonus after Year 1 and $1.6 million after Year 6. All told, Fleck's new deal would pay him an additional $2.3 million in retention bonuses. The university said Fleck's deal, including the retention bonuses, would rank tied for 11th in total salary out of 18 Big Ten football head coaches.' The program has produced record GPAs and 10 Academic All-Americans under Fleck, and his teams have won a consistent level not seen in more than 75 years. Paul Finebaum makes bold claim about Ohio State chances of repeating as national champions
Ohio State got up off the mat after a loss to Michigan at home to go on a historic run to win the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff. It was a veteran team with a lot of talent that finally began to play like the best team in the country, leaving a several top ten teams in its wake on the way to a memorable season. Despite losing 14 players off the roster to the NFL draft, there are many who still believe there's enough talent on the roster for Ohio State to defend its national title and be right there at the end again. After all, OSU has the two best players in college football with Jeremiah Smith on offense and Caleb Downs on defense, plus a five-star talent that could be taking the reigns of the offense in Julian Sayin. But not everyone thinks Ohio State has what it takes. ESPN's Paul Finebaum is one of those who think the Buckeyes don't quite have what it takes to repeat. When appearing on "Get Up," he didn't beat around the bush when asked if Ohio State could repeat. 'I don't like Ohio State,' Finebaum said. 'I think Ohio State is going to lose in the opener against Texas, and they are going to struggle to make the playoffs, let alone win it all.' Finebaum stayed on Ohio State in addressing Smith's "promise" to beat Michigan the next two seasons with some critical words for Ryan Day. 'I'm glad to see someone on the Ohio State lineup maybe do something more than just mouthing words because Jeremiah sounds serious,' Finebaum said. 'Ryan Day has promised after every loss not to lose again, and he continues to lose again. "They are the defending national champions, so even clowns like me on the fourth of July are not going to call for a firing of a coach because he loses one game. But that is a game he has to deal with at some point. But that national championship game will pay a lot of bills, probably, yes, including another loss to Michigan.' Finebaum has never been short on criticism and controversy, and his critiques of teams often go over the top, but at least you know what you are getting from him. He doesn't mince words, and in this case, he clearly believes Ohio State is a far cry from the team we saw last season, so much so that he doesn't even think the roster is good enough to easily get into the College Football Playoff. BTN analyst shares positive remarks on Michigan State hoops entering next season
One Big Ten Network basketball analyst seems to be pretty high on the Spartans heading into next season. Former Purdue Boilermaker and current Big Ten Network analyst Rapheal Davis shared some positive remarks on the Spartans for next season this week. Davis took to social media platform X to note he's expecting big things from Coen Carr, Jeremy Fears Jr. and Carson Cooper this upcoming season. Here's the exact post on X from Davis: This is the first time this offseason that Davis has provided positive insight on the Spartans from his point of view. He recently was praising the growth he was hearing for Carr and has also previously said he's expecting a breakout season for Fears. Michigan State is coming off a Big Ten championship winning season, where they also reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The Spartans, though, lost a number of key contributors off last year's team, including Jaden Akins, Jase Richardson and Tre Holloman.
