Business Times05-05-2025
[SINGAPORE] Ride-hail and delivery giant Grab announced on Monday (May 5) that Alejandro Osorio has been appointed as managing director (MD) of Grab Singapore.
Osorio currently leads the Grab Vietnam team.
In his place, Ma Tuan Trong, presently the company's country commercial head in Vietnam, will assume Osorio's role of MD for Grab's Vietnam office.
The appointments will take effect on July 1.
Osorio will be involved in the company's 'next phase of growth in Singapore', by scaling the new GrabCab taxi business to improve transport accessibility and convenience, integrating dining platform Chope's capabilities for a unified food experience, and leveraging GrabFin and GXS Bank to develop innovative financial products for Grab's users and partners.
'Singapore's openness to new ideas and commitment to public-private collaboration have given Grab invaluable opportunities to co-create industry-first solutions that truly make a difference in people's lives. That spirit of innovation is what draws me back to Singapore,' said Osorio in a media statement.

As for Trong, he has nearly seven years at Grab holding leadership positions in marketing, deliveries and commericals divisions within the Vietnam team.
He has contributed to establishing and scaling Grab's food delivery businesses from its inception to its current market position, while driving growth in the adoption of Grab's grocery and parcel delivery, omnicommerce, advertising and corporate solutions among users and partners.
Both Alejandro and Trong will report directly to Yee Wee Tang, who is himself transitioning to an expanded regional role as group managing director of operations.
'Osorio's expertise in leading diverse markets will introduce fresh strategies in Singapore, while Trong's capabilities in scaling businesses will deepen our reach within Vietnamese communities. Under their leadership, we are confident that we will continue to deliver exceptional value to our users and partners,' said Yee.
In his expanded capacity, Yee will oversee multiple countries ensuring strategic alignment across operations, as well as manage platform safety and driver and merchant operations regionally.

Vietnam stocks near record on reform hopes, trade deal optimism

[SINGAPORE] Vietnam's stock benchmark is closing in on a record high, fuelled by optimism over sweeping political reforms and clarity on a trade deal with the US. The government is undertaking its biggest administrative overhaul in decades to shrink bureaucracy as Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh pushes for more than 8 per cent economic growth this year. A trade deal that cut US tariffs on the nation's goods to 20 per cent from 46 per cent in April also clears an overhang for the market. The moves have driven a 19 per cent rally in the Vietnam Ho Chi Minh Stock Index this year, putting the market well ahead of its South-east Asian peers. More gains could follow if Vietnam secures an upgrade to emerging-market status by FTSE Russell. 'Never before have we seen such strong reforms in Vietnam,' said Tyler Manh Dung Nguyen, chief market strategist at Ho Chi Minh City Securities. 'I would allocate more in Vietnam right at the beginning of these changes.' The government is cutting red tape and unnecessary costs to redirect funds to development projects, part of its aim to achieve high-income status by 2045. Its pro-growth policies are luring investors back to the country, reversing sentiment after global funds withdrew a net US$3.18 billion from local stocks last year. Foreign investors bought US$411 million of Vietnamese shares on a net basis in July, the second month of inflows this year, while selling their holdings in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Sign Up Sign Up Conglomerate Vingroup JSC, lender Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade and Hoa Phat Group JSC are among the biggest gainers on the index this year as investors bet on major beneficiaries of the country's strong growth. The economy expanded 7.52 per cent in the six months to June, according to Vietnam's statistics office, supported by a surge in manufacturing as foreign buyers raced to avoid higher tariffs on sales to the US. 'We became more positive since May as valuations started to look compelling given the forecast earnings growth of about 15 per cent and price-earnings multiples of 10 times in 2026,' said Christopher Leow, chief executive officer at Principal Asset Management in Singapore. Investors are expecting a FTSE reclassification of Vietnam's market to take place as soon as September, which the index compiler projects may draw up to US$6 billion in capital inflows. That would give another boost to the benchmark, which is less than 2 per cent away from its all-time high in January 2022. To be clear, Vietnam's growth outlook remains clouded by a potential slowdown in global growth in the second half of the year. Uncertainty over a 40 per cent US tariff on goods deemed to be transshipped through the South-east Asian nation also weighs on local businesses. Still, the bullish case for Vietnam is hard to ignore. 'What makes Vietnam stand out globally is that it's almost inconceivable it won't become a much bigger economy', and returns on invested capital are much higher than in many other countries, said Johannes Loefstrand, portfolio manager at T Rowe Price who manages a frontier markets fund with its largest allocation in Vietnam. Laos, Vietnam launch e-wallet to boost digital trade, tourism

July 22, 2025 VIENTIANE – The LamoPay e-wallet, a new digital payment platform, was officially launched in Vientiane on July 18 to promote cross-border e-commerce and boost tourism between Laos and Vietnam. The launch took place during a seminar on strengthening business ties and promoting trade cooperation between the two neighbouring countries in the digital era. The event was jointly organised by the Department of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Laos, and the Department of Trade Promotion, Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam. The LamoPay e-wallet is expected to enable smoother payment flows between the two nations, facilitating transactions for tourists and supporting businesses in adapting to the demands of the digital economy. Officials said the platform will help travellers make secure and convenient cashless payments, boosting the tourism sector while enhancing trade connectivity. Director General of the Department of Foreign Trade, Ms Kingsadone Phetdaoheuang, highlighted the significance of the launch, saying it reflects both countries' shared commitment to building a robust digital trade and tourism platform. Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos, Mr Nguyen Minh Tam said 'Cross-border e-commerce is the fastest and most effective way for businesses in both countries, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, to sell their products directly to consumers in neighbouring markets, bypassing geographical and cost barriers.' The seminar brought together more than 100 participants, including policymakers, experts, and business leaders, who discussed the role of digital platforms, logistics systems, and e-commerce in boosting bilateral trade and tourism. In recent years, Vietnam has invested in 267 projects in Laos with a total registered capital of US$5.7 billion. In 2024 alone, Vietnamese investment in Laos reached US$191.1 million, an increase of 62.1 percent compared to 2023. During the seminar, participants explored ways to develop e-commerce platforms, improve logistics services, and leverage digital tools to support trade. Highlights included the introduction of LaoApp and discussions on links between platforms such as LaoApp-Unitel (Laos) and Vivina-Technology Group Co., Ltd. (Vietnam). A representative from the Vietnamese-Lao company AZ (VLCO) reaffirmed the company's commitment to creating a solid bridge for legal, investment, and operational activities, enabling businesses to thrive in a fast-evolving digital landscape. The seminar concluded with a policy dialogue, where experts and business leaders shared insights on advancing e-commerce collaboration. To support cross-border trade, the Lao government has also established two e-commerce websites namely, for domestic trade and to promote Lao products and facilitate trade with China.
