A new rumor claims that Apple's foldable could be just 4.8mm thick when unfolded. A report by Instant Digital on Weibo claims (source in Chinese) that the frame of the foldable iPhone will measure just 4.8mm. If that information turns out to be true, that could be Apple's thinnest device, at least when unfolded. The iPhone 16 is 7.8mm thick, and the 13-inch M4 iPad Pro, which Apple says is the thinnest product it has ever created, measures just 5.1mm. Thinness has always been important for Apple, sometimes to a fault, but this time the company might lag. Even if the iPhone Fold is as thin as claimed, the current generation of foldables is already thinner. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is only 4.2mm thick when unfolded, and the Ivory White version of the Honor Magic V5 measures at just 4.1mm. More strikingly, the iPhone Fold could fall even further behind when closed. Theoretically, the device could be as slim as 9.6mm when folded, but that's unlikely, and even Instant Digital warns against such a conclusion. The leaker says that 'the thickness of the inner screen frame pad' should be taken into consideration, though they don't share how thick that element might be. When folded, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is 8.9mm thick, and the Honor Magic V5 is 8.8mm for its thinner Ivory White version. If we assume that the iPhone Fold also has an extra 0.5mm in the thickness of both sides when folded, it could reach over 10mm. On paper, 9mm and 10mm don't sound that different, but that's still over a 10% difference. Instant Digital doesn't have the best track record, but it has made correct claims in the past. Besides, this new report confirms earlier rumors from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is considered a more reliable source. In March, Kuo claimed that the iPhone Fold would measure between 4.5mm and 4.8mm when unfolded. That means Apple could still achieve more competitive dimensions for its first foldable smartphone. I think that the rumor will turn out to be close to the truth. Apple counts on display technology from Samsung, so it would be a surprise if the iPhone Fold manages to outdo the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in that regard. What's more, Apple will likely focus on other features when promoting its foldable phone, and it'll compare it to other Apple devices, like it did with the M4 iPad Pro. Apple's Pro phones may soon catch up to Samsung in one key display area

According to a new report, the company has resolved production issues that previously held back a new scratch resistant, anti-reflective screen iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are now expected to include this advanced display coating, while the standard iPhone 17 and rumored iPhone 17 Air will not. The coating is said to reduce reflections and improve scratch resistance compared to the current Ceramic Shield protection. Apple first explored this new anti-reflective display layer in 2024, but early attempts to bring it to production ran into problems. Applying the coating was slowing down manufacturing lines, raising concerns about yield rates and delays. At the time, it seemed like the feature might be scrapped. However, Apple's suppliers have reportedly improved the process and are now able to scale it for mass production. The current generation of iPhones already includes a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating and the Ceramic Shield glass layer that Apple co-developed with Corning. However, Apple has not prioritized reducing reflections on the iPhone as much as it has for its iPads or Macs, which have received anti-reflective display treatments in recent years. The latest Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S24 Ultra, feature Gorilla Glass Armor, a new cover material that reduces glare by up to 75 percent while also improving scratch resistance. In our coverage of the Galaxy lineup, we noted how this change noticeably improves readability in sunlight. Given the rising interest in display durability and outdoor visibility, Apple's move to introduce an anti-reflective, scratch resistant coating could be seen as both a design and performance upgrade. Still, it is telling that only the Pro models are expected to receive the enhancement. Personally, I feel like this is another way Apple is continuing to separate the Pro models from the standard ones. While the improved screen could genuinely help with everyday usability, users who prefer the base model may once again feel left out of key hardware upgrades. WPC teases major announcement for next week about a "new era of wireless charging"
The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) has posted a teaser on "X" that says, "Heading into a new era of wireless charging in T-Minus 1 week… Stay tuned." This could be exciting, and the announcement, based on the aforementioned comment, would be expected to come on July 23rd. The teaser shows a green lightning bolt icon with the phrase, "It's coming" underneath the image. The WPC owns the Qi trademark which is the most well known wireless charging standard in the mobile space. Qi 2.2 will not only allow Apple to improve wireless charging speeds for the iPhone, but it will also charge more efficiently, better align the magnets, and be backward compatible. The latter means that older iPhone models will be able to use Qi 2.2, although the platform won't be able to run at its full potential on those models. Even if the upcoming Pixel line does support Qi 2.2, no Pixel yet has ever shipped with magnets to help the user properly align the phone with the wireless charging circuitry. That could soon change. Last month, we told you that Google is supposedly working on a feature dubbed "Pixelsnap" that would debut on the Pixel 10 series. This would include accessories available for the Pixel 10 models that would allow for the use of magnetic alignment. It's possible that we will learn more about this next week when the WPC makes its announcement. However, the organization's statement about "a new era of wireless charging" would seem to indicate that whatever the WPC announces next week, it will be about more than juat offering Qi 2.2 support for one new phone series.
