New-look Bears open 2025 training camp hoping to end years of rebuilds

Axios6 days ago
The Bears begin training camp at Halas Hall on Wednesday with a new coach, a new offensive line and a new sense of urgency to bring winning football to Chicago.
Why it matters: The Bears have the talent to turn around a dismal decade that has been marred with rebuilds and yearly retooling.
Flashback: Bears fans have heard this before. Last year, the team pushed the narrative that quarterback Caleb Williams would forgo usual rookie growing pains because the team was emerging from a two-year rebuild.
Reality check: They were wrong. The team struggled with Williams under center and sputtered to a 5-12 record, leading to the in-season firing of head coach Matt Eberflus.
Eberflus' on-the-field gaffes, like giving up a Hail Mary touchdown to the Commanders and mismanaging the clock in a last-second loss to the Lions on Thanksgiving, were national embarrassments.
State of play: Whiz-kid and former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has taken over this team, which once again, has the goods … on paper.
Johnson and general manager Ryan Poles made the offensive line the offseason priority, bringing in proven veterans to anchor protection for Williams.
They used their top draft picks to select tight end Colston Loveland and wide receiver Luther Burden to give Williams more weapons.
Between the lines: The Bears brass are hoping Johnson and Williams click, and Johnson is known for high-octane offense and clicking with his quarterbacks, so the chances are good that it will happen here.
Then again, Johnson has never been a head coach before. The Bears last two head coaches without experience were Eberflus and Matt Nagy.
The other side (of the ball): The defense should be improved as well. The team brought in reinforcements to help Montez Sweat on the defensive line, but it's more about keeping their young players on the field in 2025.
Safety Jaquan Brisker should be back after missing most of last season with a concussion.
The latest: The Bears' only Pro-Bowler, Jaylon Johnson, has been put on the injury list and will miss the beginning of training camp.
The bottom line: The hype is real and the Bears are hoping to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1985 Super Bowl team with a repeat performance.

Russell Wilson Played Big Role in Free Agent's Visit With NY Giants

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. For the third straight season, Russell Wilson finds himself on a new team. Though his future with the New York Giants is uncertain, it isn't stopping him from helping the organization make roster upgrades. Though he isn't the superstar talent he once was, Wilson is still a former Super Bowl winner and a notable name in the league. Knowing this, he seems to be putting forth the effort to add more weapons around him in 2025. Last week, free agent wide receiver Gabe Davis made an appearance on the Up & Adams show. Among the topics they talked about was his recent visit with the Giants. Davis opened up on getting to meet numerous members of the organization, but one of the big things for him was Wilson having dinner with him. "Going out to New York and seeing those guys and talk with them. Russ came to dinner, that was dope. Having Russell Wilson there that was pretty sick. He's a legend" When asked about the idea of catching passes from Wilson this year, Davis didn't shy away from it being something he's giving a lot of thought to. "That's me and Russ' game for sure," Davis continued. "Definitely deep ball threat and Russ knows how to sling it downfield. Something that I've looked into for sure." He had a lot of success playing with an elite-level QB in Josh Allen, notching at least seven touchdowns in three different seasons. Davis decided to hit the open market last offseason, eventually winding up on the Jacksonville Jaguars. His production took a massive dip, resulting in the front office cutting ties with him. He proved in Buffalo that he can be an effective weapon when paired with the right QB. Based on his comments about Wilson, it looks like he views him as someone he could thrive alongside. While it appears that Davis had a successful visit with the Giants, only time will tell if it results in him joining Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton in New York's receiver corps. Luther Burden practices at Bears camp Monday

Bears rookie wide receiver Luther Burden hit the field for the first time in training camp on Monday. Burden injured his hamstring during the Bears' organized team activities this spring and did not take part in the first four practice sessions of this summer's camp, but reporters at Monday's session noted that the second-round pick is participating in drills. The Bears have DJ Moore and 2024 first-round pick Rome Odunze set for their top two receiver spots. Burden, Olamide Zaccheaus, Devin Duvernay, Tyler Scott, and Myles Boykin are among the other wideouts vying for snaps in the team's offense. Burden's injury hampered his chances of earning those snaps, but he'll spend the rest of camp working to show that he's ready to play a significant role right off the bat.

Davante Adams shares how badly he wants to win: 'Only thing that drives me at this point'

'I'm really focused on that, especially having some ups and downs over these last few years' Davante Adams has racked up 11,844 receiving yards, scored 103 touchdowns and caught 957 passes in his career. He's made six Pro Bowls, been selected as an All-Pro three times and earned over $141 million during his 11 years in the NFL. One thing that's missing from his remarkable list of accolades and accomplishments is a Super Bowl ring. Though he's made the playoffs six times in his career, he's never won a championship. He hopes that changes in Los Angeles now that he's a member of the Rams. At this stage of his career, Adams isn't focused on stats or money. He just wants to win. 'I mean, that's the only thing that drives me at this point,' Adams said on Inside Rams Camp this weekend. 'It's not about the money or the statistics. All of that stuff takes care of itself. Whether I'm focused on the money or not, the check is going to be there. But whether I'm focused on winning or not, that doesn't automatically come. I'm really focused on that, especially having some ups and downs over these last few years. I'm just excited to get back on the page where we just continue to climb and ascend and win. That makes football a lot more fun.' Adams played for the Raiders and Jets in the last three years after eight years of winning consistently with the Packers. The best record his team has had since 2022 is 8-9, which was two years ago with the Raiders. Even that wasn't close to what Adams was used to in Green Bay. He signed with the Rams this offseason because he saw a winning team that was close to reaching the NFC title game just last season. He saw a veteran quarterback in Matthew Stafford, another star receiver in Puka Nacua and a defense that was dominating at the end of the season. There's no question the Rams are legitimate Super Bowl contenders and perhaps they'll be the team that gets Adams the elusive ring. They have the pieces to win it all, especially with the All-Pro receiver providing a boost on offense.
