'F1 'ending explained: Does Sonny Hayes finally win a Formula One race (and is a sequel in the works)?

F1 stars Brad Pitt as a washed-up Formula One driver who gets another shot at glory when asked to help an old friend's struggling team.
The sports drama builds to a thrilling and heartfelt ending filled with burnt rubber and practical stunts.
Director Joseph Kosinski said he has plans for a sequel. The summer blockbuster season has officially arrived, and director Joseph Kosinski's F1 is off to the races.
Starring Oscar winner Brad Pitt, the adrenaline-fueled thrill ride follows Sonny Hayes, a once-promising Formula One driver whose career was cut short due to a serious crash three decades earlier.
When his friend and old teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem) asks him to help save the struggling APXGP team, Sonny, now living out of a beat-up van and racing wherever he can, decides to take one last shot at greatness.
Below, we're taking you through F1's emotional final lap, including whether Sonny Hayes (Pitt) comes out on top and what's in store for a possible sequel.
After clashing on and off the track, Sonny and Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) — a hotshot rookie with raw talent and an ego to match — finally start to gel at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Sonny pulls out all the stops, exploiting the safety car rules by intentionally triggering minor crashes to bunch up the field. The gamble pays off, as Pearce forces his way into the midfield and scores APXGP's first-ever points finish.
With the team feeling like they have a chance, momentum builds. Sonny starts taking simulator training seriously and even convinces the brilliant technical director, Kate (Kerry Condon), to redesign the car for "combat." For the first time all season, APXGP looks like a real contender — then comes the Italian Grand Prix, where everything goes sideways.
Under heavy rain, Sonny urges Pearce to stay out on slick tires, a gutsy call that could lead to aquaplaning but boosts him into second place. Pearce's confidence soon gets the better of him, and rather than following Sonny's advice to wait for a straight, he attempts to overtake Max Verstappen at Curva Parabolica. Pearce ends up hitting a curb, and his car flies over the barrier before crashing and bursting into flames.
Kosinski revealed to Entertainment Weekly they staged the crash "practically," adding, "It was a massive set-up. Damson put his time up high in the air in a spinning car, which was pretty intense. It was actually based on an incident that happened on the same corner in Formula Three about 10 years ago. We adapted it for our film and put it in the rain and Formula One."
Watching it unfold, Sonny is transported back to the career-ending crash he suffered 30 years ago. Without hesitation, he abandons the race and sprints to the wreck, pulling Pearce from the burning car.
Pearce misses the next three races, but Sonny keeps the team alive with steady, points-scoring drives. During his first race back, Pearce's aggression boils over, and he forces a crash with Sonny. This knocks both APXGP drivers out of the race, leading to a rift forming between them.
With only two races left, Kate proposes an unconventional solution: a poker game, and the winner gets to be APXGP's No. 1 driver for the high-stakes Las Vegas Grand Prix. Pearce wins, but what he doesn't know is that Sonny folded a winning hand.
After Sonny lets Pearce win the poker game, he spends the night with Kate. However, their rendezvous is short-lived, as Ruben bursts in and shares that a whistleblower is claiming Kate's upgrades to the car are illegal.
Kate denies it, but the FIA steps in and demands the upgrades be stripped before the next race. At the Las Vegas Grand Prix, Sonny's frustration boils over. While racing Sergio Pérez, he loses his cool and crashes his car.
Kosinski told EW they had no time to rehearse the sequence. "The Las Vegas track is not a permanent track," he explained. "It's a street track down the strip that is only up for a couple of nights, so it is very hard to get access to. We were not able to get any practice time on it."
He continued, "We got one 15-minute slot in the middle of the night. It was freezing cold, so the tires were not getting any grip. And it's the only circuit we drove on that has no safety area. It's walls on both sides on a very, very fast track."
Sonny ends up in the hospital. While he recovers, Ruben learns that Sonny's injury from his 1993 crash left him nearly paralyzed and barely able to race. For his own safety, Ruben fires Sonny from the team.
As Sonny recovers, APXGP board member Peter Banning (Tobias Menzies) tells him he wants to force Ruben to sell so he can create his own team, one that includes Sonny stepping in as team principal. Peter admits he's the one who forged documents accusing Kate of illegal upgrades, hoping to get APXGP banned from the grid.
Ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Pearce finally gets his act together, committing to being more responsible and admitting that his crash wasn't Sonny's fault.
Meanwhile, Sonny finds a loophole and convinces Ruben to give him one last shot behind the wheel, finally aiming to secure that long-awaited Formula One win. Oh, and before the race, Sonny makes it clear to Peter that he's not interested in his shady offer by texting him a middle finger emoji.
Everything starts coming together, especially once the FIA clears Kate of wrongdoing and allows APXGP to use the upgrades.
During the race, Pearce takes the lead but gets passed by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. Then, just when things get tense, a red flag drops after Sonny, in fourth place, collides with George Russell, giving both APXGP drivers fresh tires and a second shot at the title.
When the race resumes, Sonny charges past Leclerc and, in a selfless move, forces race leader Hamilton to block him instead of Pearce. However, Hamilton and Pearce crash on the final lap, clearing the way for Sonny to claim his lifelong dream of winning a Formula One race. The win also stops the team's sale, and Sonny and Ruben celebrate together on the podium.
As the champagne flows, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff offers Pearce a coveted seat, but he passes, choosing to stick with APXGP. Later, Pearce congratulates Sonny but tells him it's cool he took this win because Pearce himself is "gonna win a million races."
In the movie's final moments, Sonny and Kate share a bittersweet goodbye (for now). Sonny's got other races to run, even if it means his relationship with Kate is a long-distance one. And with that, Sonny hits the road again, trading Formula One for the rugged Baja 1000 off-road race.
As of now, no official F1 sequel has been announced. Rumor has it, though, that the wheels are turning behind the scenes. On Monday, June 30, Variety reported that talks are underway, and director Joseph Kosinski previously told EW he's already got sequel ideas brewing.
"But that's up to the audience to decide if they want to see it," he said. "I loved working with this group of people. I loved creating our own Formula One team. I'd love to see what's up next for APXGP and Sonny Hayes."
What could an F1 sequel look like? In a chat with British GQ, Kosinski revealed his ultimate dream is to bring in Tom Cruise for an epic Days of Thunder crossover.
"Well, right now, it'd be Cole Trickle, who was [Cruise's] Days of Thunder character, we find out that he and Sonny Hayes have a past," he shared. "They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths… I heard about this epic go-kart battle on Interview with a Vampire that Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn't pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?"
F1 is now in theaters, but it will become available to stream on Apple TV+ at a later date.Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

Universal's reboot of Jurassic World — Jurassic World Rebirth starring Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey — is shaping up for a $115 million-$135 million five-day opening according to three-weekend tracking released Thursday morning. This is the second Jurassic movie to open on a Wednesday in Universal's history after 2001's Jurassic Park III, which did $85M over its first Wednesday to Sunday. Scarlett Johansson Recalls 'A Lot' Of Female Roles Centering 'Male Gaze' Early In Her Career

From her child actor beginnings to her MCU days and beyond, Scarlett Johansson has noticed a shift in Hollywood for women. The 2x Oscar nominee recently explained that some of the onscreen opportunities she's seen in recent years have represented 'a different time for young women' in the industry, moving away from roles that center the male gaze. 'But when I was younger, a lot of the roles I was offered, or I went for, had their ambitions or character arcs revolving around their own desirability, or the male gaze, or a male-centred story,' added Johansson. 'That is less frequent, though — something has shifted.' Johansson made her film debut at age 9 in North (1994), having since starred in such films as The Horse Whisperer (1998), Ghost World (2001), Lost in Translation (2003) and her decade-long run in the MCU that culminated with her solo outing in 2021's Black Widow. The actress can currently be seen in Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme, now in theaters, as well as Jurassic World Rebirth, premiering July 2. She also made her feature directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, which had its world premiere last month at Cannes. ‘M3GAN' 2.Oh No: Why Blumhouse & Atomic Monster Sequel Sputtered & Crashed At The Box Office

After becoming a surprise hit at the 2023 winter box office to the tune of $180 million worldwide off a $12M budget, fueled by a flaming-hot TikTok dance meme, there was no question that Blumhouse and Atomic Monster had to make a sequel to M3GAN. The psycho-doll movie was back, and this time she was a girl. She even argued with Chucky on social media which excited young females (53% women, 44% under 25). At a time in the post-pandemic box office, particularly during a post-Christmas when most of the country was in a deep-freeze, M3GAN seduced. More from Deadline 'Jurassic World Rebirth' About To Get Loud With $260M Global Opening Over Independence Day Stretch – Box Office Preview 'M3GAN 2.0' Review: The Killer Doll Is Back But In A Kickass Mission To Defeat An Even Greater AI Threat In Fun, Action-Packed Sequel Cynthia Erivo's Edith's Daughter & Platinum Dunes Producing Feature Take Of 'Saturation Point' At Universal But this time around, moviegoers had no interest in making a playdate with the doll as Blumhouse's release M3GAN 2.0 via Universal posted a horrible opening of $10.2M ($17M worldwide) this weekend, -66% off from the original's $30.4M U.S./Canada opening. When M3GAN 2.0 hit tracking three weeks ago on NRG, a then-future was conceived that it had a shot at rivaling Apple Original Films' Brad Pitt Formula One racing movie, F1, each debuting to $30M+ apiece. No way in hell. Why did M3GAN 2.0 arrive so high on tracking? Blame the fact that sequels register a greater total awareness than original movies (tracking didn't foresee F1's $57M opening) in box office forecasting. Rival tracking firms spotted interest for the Gerard Johnstone-directed part two lower than awareness — a tell-tale sign. Never mind that exits were better than original movie, a B+ to a B. Once a movie is behind in its opening, it's very hard to make up that gap in audience exits alone. Critics were smitten with M3GAN two years ago at 93% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, but this time they had decided they had enough of the short dress routine at 57% Rotten. 'The results are thoroughly middling — not funny enough to qualify as comedy, not exciting enough to qualify as action, not smart enough to qualify as a cautionary tale, and certainly not weird enough to keep the M3gan ethos alive,' exclaimed New York Magazine film critic Bilge Ebiri. As far as WTF happened, sequels to gimmick horror movies are hard. There's a fine line between replicating the original and veering too far from the original. M3GAN 2.0 veered. How did Paramount pull off Smile 2 with a domestic opening of $23M, on par with the first? Not only was part two different in the neurosis of a pop singer, but the Melrose lot sold it on scares (in addition to wicked grinning people showing up at major events). M3GAN 2.0 was campy out of the gate, and marketed to the Nth degree on her sass. The official trailer begins ironically with Boyz II Men's 'It's Hard to Say Goodbye' and builds to Britney Spears' 'Oops, I Did It Again' set against the doll's battle with a new foe, the A.I. beastess, Amelia. Exhibitors and others found the elevator pitch to be a retread of Terminator 2: Judgement Day. The antagonist, M3GAN, was now the protag. One example of the humor in the trailer is when Allison Williams' Gemma tells M3GAN, 'You threatened to rip out my tongue and put me in a wheelchair.' Responds the femme-bot, 'I was upset!' When it comes to promoting any movie, materials are only as good as the movie itself. Hence, Uni leaned into the camp and the humor. Outdoor street ads in Los Angeles aimed at the LGBTQ+ moviegoers, who showed up big for the first movie, had the tagline 'Miss me, Queens?' Uni dropped teasers in all the right spots, i.e. the Grammy Awards, Super Bowl and a first trailer release timed to Universal's presentation at CinemaCon Las Vegas, where 30 M3GAN dancers showed up on stage. There were spots across NBA Finals, Premiere League Finals, the American Music Awards, finales of Suits LA, The Voice and American Ninja Warrior. Nine influencers were cast in the film and also cross-promoted: Roblox launched its 'M3GAN's Lair' integration – which used 'smart character' tech for the first time ever to let players build their own M3GAN with looks from the film. TikTok pulses targeted conversations surrounding events like the Grammys, Coachella, the Met Gala, SNL, the NBA Finals and Pride. M3GAN's fans caught her declaring 'Hot M3G Summer' in a spot on the Las Culturistas podcast and doing viral custom intros to Sabrina Carpenter's 'Manchild' video, which reached at least 2.6 million users on X. The doll was a draft picked by WNBA star Kelsey Plum and walked the tunnel with the player before the LA Sparks v. Seattle Storm game. M3GAN then turned to dancing in the stands… She reached 77M followers with an appearance on RuPaul's Drag Race: All Stars. She was everywhere with social media analytics firm RelishMix reporting that M3GAN 2.0's online reach was +27% ahead of other horror franchises with 263M followers across Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook and YouTube. But all of Universal's horses and all of Universal's men could not persuade moviegoers to see M3GAN again. RelishMix noticed the gossip about M3GAN 2.0 with 'some taking umbrage with the look of the titular character, posting 'That face looks CG, I liked the last one which was kind of a mask, and a mix of familiar and unfamiliar,' and, 'Is it me or did the graphics get worse?' Meanwhile, some were already hedging their bets, sharing, 'A movie which you know how exactly it's gonna play out.' As well, 'Changing genres was a grave mistake. The box office will reflect that.'' Some sources are trying to blame the release date, but clearly the PG-13 sequel was after a different audience than the dude movie that is F1 which pulled in 62% men. M3GAN 2.0 had a bigger proportion of women at 53%. There's no reason why there couldn't be wide release counter-programming aimed at women this past weekend. It goes back to the movie, period: If M3GAN 2.0 was seductive enough in raised stake scares, we'd see a different outcome here. In a do-or-die year for horror movies, was she too soon on the heels of 28 Years Later ($50.3M domestic through its second weekend) and Final Destination: Bloodlines ($136.6M through weekend 7)? Again, if she was freaky enough to turn heads, she'd have no problem following the boys. It's not often that a horror sequel completely tanks at the box office after a blockbuster first edition. Some of the most notable corpses when it comes to horror sequels include 2000's Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 which died at $26.4M domestic, $47.7M worldwide after the found-footage jaw dropping success of 1999's The Blair Witch Project with $140.5M domestic/$248.6M worldwide. Then there was 1982's Amityville II: The Possession which unadjusted for inflation grossed $12.5M stateside, a mere 14% of the original 1979 hit which minted $86.4M per Box Office Mojo. 1977's The Exorcist: The Heretic was also sent to hell by moviegoers with a $30.7M domestic take, a 16% fraction of the 2x Oscar-winning take of 1973 original's $193M domestic gross (lifetime wound up being $233M in U.S./Canada). Yes, M3GAN 2.0 comes at a time when Blumhouse is on a bad streak with The Woman in The Yard ($22.4M domestic), Wolf Man ($20.7M) and Drop ($16.6M). Thank God they make 'em cheap, this one at $25M before P&A. Will M3GAN 2.0 be profitable? With low batteries like this, she's no Energizer Bunny ala her first version which cleared close to $79M in net profit. James Wan's Atomic Monster, Blumhouse's sister brand, is also a producer here. We expect more from the horror maestros who delivered ingenious scares like Saw, Paranormal Activity and The Purge. Incubate more and rush less. Better hope for Blumhouse resides in Black Phone 2 (Oct 17) and Five at Freddy's 2 (Dec 5) while Atomic Monster has New Line's Mortal Kombat 2 (Oct. 24) and The Conjuring: Last Rites (Dec. 5). Then there's Blumhouse's Soulm8te, another A.I. horror movie set in the world of M3GAN on Jan. 9 next year. Universal will certainly want to separate that pic's sell from this nasty doll.
