College baseball notebook: FSU's series win over Clemson moves it into 1st in tightly bunched ACC
The next two weekends will determine which four teams earn double byes for the ACC Tournament in Durham, North Carolina, on May 20-25.
Florida State (33-10, 14-7) won two of three at home against Clemson to move past North Carolina State (30-15, 15-8) for the conference lead. The Wolfpack lost two at Miami and the third game of their series was rained out.
The Seminoles completed the series win against Clemson with a 20-9 walk-off, run-rule victory Sunday. They went deep three times in the eighth inning and finished with six homers in a game for the third time this season. Drew Faurot and Alex Lodise connected twice apiece.
FSU leads the ACC in batting (.322), slugging (.548) and homers (81). Lodise's .430 batting average and .804 slugging percentage are first in the conference, and the junior shortstop has played his way into being a projected second-round draft pick.
Left-hander Jamie Arnold is the team's top draft prospect. Arnold (5-1, 2.29 ERA) ranks among the national leaders in strikeouts per nine innings (11.95) and walks and hits per inning (0.96) and is projected to be among the first five picks.
Third-place North Carolina (35-10, 15-9) has the ACC's toughest closing stretch. The Tar Heels host rival N.C. State this week and then visit FSU.
In the polls
There was disagreement at the top of the polls Monday. Texas (38-8) remained No. 1 by D1Baseball.com after it was swept at Arkansas. Georgia (39-11) replaced the Longhorns in the Baseball America rankings after it swept Missouri on the road and extended its win streak to six games.
DIBaseball promoted Florida State from No. 5 to No. 2 and dropped LSU (38-11) from No. 2 to No. 3 after it lost two of three at Texas A&M.
Baseball America dropped Texas from No. 1 to No. 2 and gave Arkansas a hefty promotion from No. 10 to No. 3.
Gators on the move
One month ago, Florida was 1-11 in Southeastern Conference play. Since then the Gators have won 10 of 12 conference games to move into position for an NCAA Tournament bid.
Florida (33-16, 11-13) swept South Carolina on the road, with Kevin O'Sullivan picking up his 750th career win with Sunday's 8-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader. The sweep was the Gators' first in Columbia since 1996 and first on the road against any team since 2022.
7 for 7
Caleb Shpur became the first UConn player since 1979 to have a seven-hit game when he went 7 for 7 with six singles and a home run in a 29-10 win at Villanova on Saturday.
The previous player to collect seven hits was Payton Brennan of UCLA, against UC Santa Barbara on March 26, 2024.
Scoring in bunches
Arizona State used a five-run seventh inning to beat Baylor 8-6 on Sunday and win the series. The Sun Devils have had 112 innings in which they've scored at least two runs, 60 innings with at least three, 28 innings with at least four and 18 innings with at least five. They're second in the Big 12 Conference with 8.5 runs per game.
Cleanup spot
Northeastern's 10-0 win over Delaware on Sunday was the Huskies' nation-leading 16th in a row and 14th shutout, the most since Oregon State blanked 14 opponents in 2017. ... The Big East looks like a three-team race with first-place Creighton (31-13, 12-3) having won nine straight conference games and UConn (30-18, 14-4) having won 12 in a row in league play. The Bluejays are percentage points ahead of the Huskies. Third-place Xavier (29-21, 13-5) plays three games at Creighton this weekend. ... TCU's Colton Griffin tied a single-game school record with three doubles in a 13-6 win over Arizona on Sunday. ... Brandon Bak threw Illinois-Chicago's first no-hitter since 2004 in Saturday's 10-0 seven-inning win at Valparaiso.

Dabo Swinney didn't dodge the question when asked on SportsCenter at ACC Media Days about the latest jab from LSU head coach Brian Kelly. With Clemson and LSU set to square off to begin the 2025 season, the long-running debate over which school owns the title of 'Death Valley' has once again taken center stage. 'Well, I think, first of all, both programs are for real. These are two great programs. We've met a couple times over the years. Great respect for LSU,' Swinney said. 'But I think if you just Google Coach McMillian, who was the head coach at PC — you can go and do that research on your own. But all that matters is how we handle our business in Clemson, South Carolina, on August 30th. So, that's our focus. But that stuff is historical facts, so I'll let you do the research on that. You can report back. I'll be tuned in for your report. You have a homework assignment.' Swinney was referring to Lonnie McMillian, the former head coach at Presbyterian College, who famously dubbed Clemson's Memorial Stadium 'Death Valley' after a 76-0 loss to the Tigers in 1945. Each time his team made the trip to Clemson, McMillian would tell reporters, 'I'm taking my boys to Death Valley.' The nickname stuck, and the media ran with it. By the mid-1940s, Clemson had fully adopted the label. Meanwhile, LSU didn't begin calling Tiger Stadium 'Death Valley' until 1959, and the name didn't really gain national recognition until several decades later. Clemson and Presbyterian opened every season from 1930 to 1957, giving McMillian plenty of opportunities to use the now-famous phrase. Over time, it became a staple of Clemson football tradition. Now, with both programs ranked among the sport's elite, the debate over which Death Valley is the 'real' one has added fuel ahead of their highly anticipated matchup. That answer might become a little clearer on August 30, when LSU makes the trip to Memorial Stadium in Clemson to open the 2025 college football season. ESPN names Ohio State as a college basketball team that could 'make a jump' this season
We are all getting ready for the start of the college football season now just a little over a month away, but the college basketball season won't be too far behind. In fact, we're now within 100 days of the Ohio State basketball season, and ESPN took a big look at previewing hoops for 2025-2026 by looking at many different angles and storylines. One of the things Myron Metcalf and Jeff Borzello touched on was ten teams that "could make a jump" this coming season. And, if you are an Ohio State fan, then you have to like what the ESPN duo things of the Buckeyes this season because they were named as one of those ten teams. OSU was able to retain some key pieces of its core group, but outside of that, there's been a major overhaul of the guys suiting up in the scarlet and gray this season. The mix of old and new will have to come together for the Buckeyes to get back to the NCAA Tournament, but there's good reason to believe that it could happen. Here's what Borzello says about Ohio State this winter: "The Buckeyes showed flashes of their potential last season but couldn't quite string together a consistent run of form. With a terrific trio back in Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr. -- plus the additions of Christoph Tilly and Brandon Noel up front -- Jake Diebler's team should find itself in the NCAA tournament." It sure seems like Ohio State hasn't had a shortage of talent over the last few years, but getting the team to come together and play as a team has been an issue that seems to be a problem in today's day and age of the transfer portal and name, image and likeness. Here's to hoping ESPN is right and that the Buckeyes make it back to meaningful games late and on into the postseason this basketball season. Kitayama wins 3M Open. Lottie Woad wins in her pro debut and Harrington takes a 2nd senior major
BLAINE, Minn. (AP) — Kurt Kitayama finished a sizzling weekend with a 6-under 65 to win the 3M Open on Sunday by one shot over Sam Stevens for his second PGA Tour victory. Kitayama, who tied the tournament record with a career-best 60 on Saturday to enter the final round within one of the lead, birdied six of the first eight holes to take control on a 91-degree afternoon at the TPC Twin Cities. Kitayama led by one playing the par-5 18th when he hit 5-iron onto the back slope of a bunker. He blasted out to about 18 feet and took two putts for par to finish at 23-under 261. Matt Wallace, David Lipsky, Pierceson Coody and Jake Knapp tied for third, three strokes back. Kitayama, whose only other PGA Tour win was the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2023, moved to No. 53 in the FedEx Cup with one week remaining for the top 70 to qualify for the postseason. He also earned a two-year exemption and a spot in the Masters next year. LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour IRVINE, Scotland (AP) — Lottie Woad never flinched Sunday on her way to a 4-under 68 to win the Women's Scottish Open by three shots over Hyo Joo Kim in her professional debut. The 21-year-old Englishwoman is the second player in three years to win on the LPGA Tour in her pro debut, following Rose Zhang in the Mizuho Americas Open at Liberty National in 2023. Woad finished at 21-year 267 and earned $300,000. Woad was the No. 1 amateur in the women's ranking when she won the Women's Irish Open on the Ladies European Tour three weeks ago. He closed with a 3-under 67 to win his second senior major of the year. Staked to a two-shot lead, Harrington made eagle on the first hole on the Old Course at Sunningdale and no one got closer than two shots the rest of the way as he became the fifth player with a Senior British Open and a British Open title. He won by three shots over Thomas Bjorn (67) and Justin Leonard (68). Harrington joined Darren Clarke, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Bob Charles as players to have won the British Open and the senior version. LIV Golf League UTTOEXTER, England (AP) — Joaquin Niemann changed his coach and his caddie and won for the fifth time this year on the LIV Golf League, closing with a 3-under 68 in LIV Golf-UK for a three-shot victory over Bubba Watson. Niemann missed the cut in the British Open last week for his second straight missed cut in a major. He made big changes by leaving his coach and getting a new caddie but found his comfort zone back on LIV. Niemann has won seven times, all in the last two years, on the Saudi-backed circuit. He has won just over $21 million this year. Watson closed with a 65, while Caleb Surratt also had a 65 to finish alone in third. Legion XIII won the team title. Korn Ferry Tour GLENVIEW, Ill. (AP) — Johnny Keefer played bogey-free over the final 10 holes and pulled away with a 2-under 69 for a two-shot victory in the NV5 Invitational, his second Korn Ferry Tour win of the year that secures his spot on the PGA Tour next year. Jeffrey Kang made eagle on the par-5 18th at The Glen Club for a 65 that allowed him to finish alone in second. Neal Shipley closed with a 63 and tied for third along with Kensei Hirata (65) and Davis Chatfield (67). Keefer regained the top spot on the Korn Ferry Tour points list and joined Austin Smotherman as two-time winners on the circuit this year. Other tours Brett White made eagle on the final hole for a 59, and then won the Commissionaires Ottawa Open with a birdie on the second hole of a three-man playoff. It was the second 59 on the PGA Tour Americas in as many years. ... ...
