‘Scam Artist!' Trump Accuses Senator Adam Schiff of Mortgage Fraud In Latest Claim
Last Updated: Senator Adam Schiff has denied any wrongdoing in posts on X. US President Donald Trump has levelled fresh accusations against California Senator Adam Schiff. In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that the Democratic leader is a 'scam artist" who should be 'brought to justice" for his alleged involvement in mortgage fraud. Trump alleges that Schiff's actions were an attempt to defraud the American public. According to The Post, the Federal Housing Finance Agency has written to the Justice Department requesting a further investigation. In his Truth Social post, Trump wrote, 'I have always suspected Shifty Adam Schiff was a scam artist. And now I learn that Fannie Mae's Financial Crimes Division have concluded that Adam Schiff has engaged in a sustained pattern of possible Mortgage Fraud." The Democratic senator from California reportedly declared his Maryland home as his primary residence in 2003. However, in 2009, he listed his California condo as his primary home, allowing him to claim a $7,000 rebate on the 1% property tax, as per KFox TV. Under California state law, to qualify for such an exemption, 'a dwelling must be the person's true, fixed, and permanent home." While Schiff did not claim any tax relief on the Maryland property, which was later designated as his secondary residence in 2020, Trump insists this leads to mortgage fraud and says Schiff must be held accountable. Schiff has denied any wrongdoing in posts on X (formerly Twitter), describing the accusation as yet another political smear by Trump aimed at discrediting his opponents. 'This is just Donald Trump's latest attempt at political retaliation against his perceived enemies. And much as Trump may hope, this smear will not distract from his Epstein files problem," Schiff posted. Since I led his first impeachment, Trump has repeatedly called for me to be arrested for in a way, I guess this is a bit of a letdown. And this baseless attempt at political retribution won't stop me from holding him accountable. Not by a long shot. — Adam Schiff (@SenAdamSchiff) July 15, 2025 Questions surrounding Schiff's mortgage claims first emerged in 2023 following a CNN report. However, according to real estate experts, Schiff is unlikely to face legal consequences, as California's property laws are considered ambiguous in their interpretation. This is not the first time Trump has levelled allegations against Schiff. The two have long had a contentious relationship. Schiff previously chaired the House Intelligence Committee, which investigated Trump's alleged ties to Russia, and played a key role in Trump's 2020 Senate impeachment trial. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 00:05 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
