Eric Idle says he feels ‘lucky every single day' after surviving cancer

Independent8 hours ago
Actor and comedian Eric Idle has said he feels lucky 'every single day' after surviving pancreatic cancer.
Idle, 82, revealed in 2022 that he had received an early diagnosis and been successfully treated for the illness.
In a Letter To My Younger Self for the Big Issue, the Monty Python star said: 'I miss a lot of people. Great people like Mike Nichols.
'I will find myself thinking of a funny line and thinking, you must tell Mike that. Or Jonathan Miller. So many of my heroes have gone, like Robin Williams. I still kind of occasionally speak to Billy Connolly, but I really miss him.
'You've got to find other people, you know, because there are still other funny people you can have dinner with or play guitar with.
'I got lucky, because I had to, I survived pancreatic cancer. So I feel that since 2019 I've had a reprieve. So I don't know or care what people say about me, I'm lucky every single day.'
Idle also reflected on some of the issues financing Monty Python's Life Of Brian, which saw the film's creators receive help from Beatles star George Harrison.
He said: 'For a while we had no money. (Media impresario) Lew Grade read it and just went nuts. He said, we can't possibly make this. I went to America to find money.
'I had been talking to George Harrison who was a huge fan, and he said, 'I'll phone you in the morning, don't worry'. And I thought, well, nobody's got four and a half million dollars.
'But finally, when everybody turned us down, there was a call from him saying, 'I've got you the money'.
'He had mortgaged his house and his business and raised the cash and put it all on a Python film. The most extraordinary thing to do.'
Idle, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and Sir Michael Palin fronted the ground-breaking sketch show Monty Python's Flying Circus.
A huge hit, 45 episodes were made between 1969 and 1974, as well as five films including 1975's The Holy Grail, on which hit musical Spamalot – written by Idle – is based.

Woman builds cosy garden 'sanctuary' using a £300 IKEA purchase and sprucing up old furniture

A savvy woman has revealed how she used a £300 purchase from IKEA to create a cosy 'garden room' without splashing out thousands. Sarah, from England, who often posts home and lifestyle inspiration on her TikTok @hearts_at_claremont, shared how she gave her patio the ultimate summer glow-up with a pergola from the flatpack furniture store. She also spruced up old furniture and decor to instantly transform the space into a 'sanctuary.' 'We loved our garden room in our old house, and I really wanted to create something similar in our new garden,' she told the clip, which has racked up nearly 250,000 views. 'So, with a pergola from IKEA and some help from my lovely dad, I was able to transform this space quickly and easily.' Sarah went onto say the lightweight frame was 'easy to put together', however she struggled putting the canopy on. 'What I thought would be a five-minute job actually took a lot longer, but since we had mastered it, it was really easy to open and close,' she added. The influencer also explained how her dad drilled the frame down into the paving and put some brackets on to make it more stable in the wind. 'After giving the garden furniture a fresh lick of paint, I then added some established plants,' she continued. The content creator included a gorgeous climbing Jasmine and some other smaller flora to 'soften the look of the pergola'. 'I added rugs, soft furnishings, cushions, and candles and no space is ever complete for me until I have added some fairy lights,' Sarah said. 'I'm so happy with how this project has turned out. Our comfy, cosy little summer sanctuary.' In the comments, she revealed her old garden furniture was from Argos but added the The Cotswold Company have something similar. Many viewers rushed to compliment the incredible turnaround. 'Who knew IKEA sold pergola! Thanks for this it looks stunning,' one gushed. Another said: 'Well done you, a stunning and relaxing space.' Many rushed to the comments to compliment the mother on the very thrifty garden transformation Someone else asked: 'How much was the full makeover including the plants and paint etc? Thanks' To which Sarah replied: 'Hi I had all the furniture already so it's hard to say! I've painted it all even the sofa to make it all look fresh again! The jasmine plant was £55 and I got the Foxgloves etc from B&Q xx' A fourth added: 'Looks fantastic. Well done to you all. Enjoy whilst you can.' It comes after a DIY lover revealed how she achieved her epic garden transformation - and did everything herself. Jenna Weir from Scotland decided to transform her lifeless new build plot, achieving a brand-new look with DIY and bargain finds from B&M and Poundland. Now, four years on from getting the keys to the property, her garden boasts a 'Scandi chic retreat' complete with stylish decking, swinging chair and sofa area. Jenna had been quoted between £7,000 and £15,000 to transform her garden, but by doing the work herself she managed to complete the work for just over £1,000. Posting on her TikTok account @weir_home, Jenna shared a clip of the amazing renovations, admitting: 'I can't believe we managed to do all of this ourselves.' Jenna described how she managed to achieve the monochrome minimalist look without breaking the bank. She and her partner Callum carried out all the labour costs themselves, including fitting and painting the decking, adding furniture and decorations. The couple paid £200 for rolls of grass, and £180 for a new 6ft fence. The decking kit cost £550, but saved on manual costs by installing it themselves. Speaking to Gardeners World, Jenna said: 'A lot of my garden decor finds are from B&M and Home Bargains including the fence and decking paint which was from B&M. 'Our glass solar fence lights were a find from Poundland and our beautiful U-shape garden set was from a business local to me called Modish Furnishings who regularly do sales.' Describing the process of renovation, she added: 'When me and my husband moved into our new build property, the soil in our garden wasn't very good and the ground quickly became filled with weeds, so it needed a lot of TLC before we even started laying out grass. 'As we didn't have the finances at the time to start our garden properly, we opted to lay grass all over so we had a place to sit. 'We kept the original slabs the builder had laid for going in and out the back door and erected a 6ft fence for privacy to replace the 3ft one the builder had originally put in. 'After having the grass for nearly a year, we then started our decking transformation. 'The decking was erected at the top of the grass with a white stone border. We then began painting the fences with a stunning Cuprinol natural stone, as well as fitting a 'green wall' for more privacy in this area. 'During the renovation, we discovered we had a dead patch which ran along the side of our patio doors so we replaced this with large white pebbles and topiary balls before finalising the rest of the garden furniture and decor– and I still love the way it turned out!'

Chelsea stars are joined by WAGs in post Club World Cup final celebrations in New York - after Blues stunned PSG to end 11-month campaign in style

Chelsea stars were lauded by their partners after their stunning 3-0 victory over PSG in the FIFA Club World Cup final, as their arduous season drew to a close in fine fashion. Cole Palmer struck twice and Joao Pedro netted a third for the Blues at the MetLife Stadium in New York, as Enzo Marseca's side shocked the reigning European champions. After winning the expanded 32-team tournament, the Blues were presented with the trophy by US President Donald Trump. Chelsea players had looked bewildered as Trump remained on stage during their trophy celebrations, with Palmer appearing to say 'What's he doing?'. Following the ceremony, Chelsea stars were reunited with their friends and family on the pitch. The final completed a lengthy and successful season for the Premier League side, with Chelsea earning Champions League qualification as well as winning the lucrative Club World Cup and Conference League. The Blues first pre-season match had come nearly a year ago when they faced Wrexham on July 24 in the United States, with their first competitive fixture of 2025-26 held nearly 11 months ago against Man City. Chelsea winger Pedro Neto was embraced on the pitch following the victory by his girlfriend Carolina Cunha e Silva, with the pair pictured kissing while holding the trophy. Silva toasted her partner's success on Instagram, writing 'There was no better way to end the season', while sharing a series of photos from the final and on-field celebrations. Enzo Fernandez's girlfriend Valentina Cervantes highlighted his continued success in her post. Fernandez has enjoyed a stunning couple of years with Argentina, but has now started to secure silverware with the Blues. The Club World Cup success follows Fernandez winning the 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America with Argentina, while he recently picked up a Conference League winners medal with Chelsea. Sharing a photo with Fernandez and their two children, Cervantes wrote 'One more again and keep winning. 'What pride and admiration you make us feel and live unforgettable moments that remain in our memory forever.' It is a similar story for defender Marc Cucurella, who has added silverware at Chelsea to the European Championship title he earned with Spain last summer. Cucurella, who had a Spanish flag draped around him, was embraced by his wife Claudia Rodriguez on the pitch. Cucurella and Rodriguez also posed holding the trophy alongside members of his family on the pitch. Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, who was seen wearing a world champions t-shirt, amid the celebrations was joined by his wife Maria Jesus Pariente and their four children post-match. Reports suggested that Maresca had offered his players a high degree of freedom throughout the competition. Maintaining professionalism has remained an imperative, but the players were trusted to enjoy some downtime following an arduous campaign. Ahead of the final, a number of Chelsea stars had been joined by their partners in enjoying downtime between matches and taking in the sights during the competition. In addition, the club were said to have brought in FA staff to organise the team's camp including accommodation and activities for the players' families. Maresca has allowed his team a large amount of freedom throughout the competition The club drafted in FA staff in order to organise camps behind the scenes for players and their families It is understood that many of the group flew out once Chelsea reached the knockout stages as the club held a team bonding BBQ at their Miami base. Since then, a number of the WAGs, including Fernandez's girlfriend Valentina Cervantes remained with the group in the build-up to the final. On Saturday Cervantes shared a snap of herself watching a Blues training session as Maresca put his finishing touches on the game plan for the clash with Les Parisiens. Meanwhile, the partners of Pedro Neto, Marc Cucurella and Filip Jorgensen took to the streets of the Big Apple to do some sightseeing.

Traveller cleaning fan reveals ‘best method ever' for smear-free windows & why you must NEVER clean them on a sunny day

A cleaning-obsessed traveller has gone viral after revealing what she calls the 'best method ever' for getting your windows crystal clear. She's warning fellow cleaning fans never to clean windows on a sunny day if you're after a smear-free finish. 2 2 Angela Ann Doherty, known as @cleaningwithangelaannd on TikTok, has built a loyal following for her no-nonsense cleaning hacks, and this one's already getting a lot of attention. She claims the secret to streak-free windows is all about technique and timing. Angela explained: 'Only use a tiny bit of washing up liquid." She then advises to wash and dry your window as normal but here's the magic step - buff it up with a Vileda shammy. According to her, this leaves glass absolutely gleaming. But she's got a stern warning, whatever you do, don't try it on a sunny day. Angela said: 'The sun reacts with the bubbles and causes smears." And she's not having any of the old- school advice either. She warned fans to steer clear of "newspaper and vinegar" as the newspaper will clump, causing another mess to clean up and in Angela's words the vinegar "just stinks". I was gutted when scrubbing didn't get my 'stained' blender clean, then remembered a £3.25 spray I had in the cupboard The traveller TikToker swears by this method and insists it's a family secret passed down from her mum, promising you won't be disappointed. Her fans love her for being straight-talking and honest about everything, from hoovering holy pictures, to drying surfaces with extra-thick yellow cloths to help ease the pain in her hands. And if you want your house smelling as fresh as it looks, she's also obsessed with baby powder-scented Spanish cleaning sprays, all of which she gets from the Little Spanish Cleaning Company. So there you have it, if you want your windows gleaming, ditch the vinegar, avoid the sunshine, and grab yourself a shammy. Your house, and your nose, will thank you. Meanwhile, it's not just windows that Angela is mad about. The traveller has revealed how she spends 40 minutes a day cleaning her front and back doors. Angela Ann Doherty, who has white PVC doors and windows, is determined to keep them looking clean and shiny. She explained that she scrubs them thoroughly to ensure 'every nook and cranny' is sparkling clean before rewashing them. She's keen to share her tips and tricks, having previously shared the six life lessons they are taught as young girls, with one of the key rules revolving around food and drink.
