Woman builds cosy garden 'sanctuary' using a £300 IKEA purchase and sprucing up old furniture

Daily Mail5 hours ago
A savvy woman has revealed how she used a £300 purchase from IKEA to create a cosy 'garden room' without splashing out thousands.
Sarah, from England, who often posts home and lifestyle inspiration on her TikTok @hearts_at_claremont, shared how she gave her patio the ultimate summer glow-up with a pergola from the flatpack furniture store.
She also spruced up old furniture and decor to instantly transform the space into a 'sanctuary.'
'We loved our garden room in our old house, and I really wanted to create something similar in our new garden,' she told the clip, which has racked up nearly 250,000 views.
'So, with a pergola from IKEA and some help from my lovely dad, I was able to transform this space quickly and easily.'
Sarah went onto say the lightweight frame was 'easy to put together', however she struggled putting the canopy on.
'What I thought would be a five-minute job actually took a lot longer, but since we had mastered it, it was really easy to open and close,' she added.
The influencer also explained how her dad drilled the frame down into the paving and put some brackets on to make it more stable in the wind.
'After giving the garden furniture a fresh lick of paint, I then added some established plants,' she continued.
The content creator included a gorgeous climbing Jasmine and some other smaller flora to 'soften the look of the pergola'.
'I added rugs, soft furnishings, cushions, and candles and no space is ever complete for me until I have added some fairy lights,' Sarah said.
'I'm so happy with how this project has turned out. Our comfy, cosy little summer sanctuary.'
In the comments, she revealed her old garden furniture was from Argos but added the The Cotswold Company have something similar.
Many viewers rushed to compliment the incredible turnaround.
'Who knew IKEA sold pergola! Thanks for this it looks stunning,' one gushed.
Another said: 'Well done you, a stunning and relaxing space.'
Many rushed to the comments to compliment the mother on the very thrifty garden transformation
Someone else asked: 'How much was the full makeover including the plants and paint etc? Thanks'
To which Sarah replied: 'Hi I had all the furniture already so it's hard to say! I've painted it all even the sofa to make it all look fresh again! The jasmine plant was £55 and I got the Foxgloves etc from B&Q xx'
A fourth added: 'Looks fantastic. Well done to you all. Enjoy whilst you can.'
It comes after a DIY lover revealed how she achieved her epic garden transformation - and did everything herself.
Jenna Weir from Scotland decided to transform her lifeless new build plot, achieving a brand-new look with DIY and bargain finds from B&M and Poundland.
Now, four years on from getting the keys to the property, her garden boasts a 'Scandi chic retreat' complete with stylish decking, swinging chair and sofa area.
Jenna had been quoted between £7,000 and £15,000 to transform her garden, but by doing the work herself she managed to complete the work for just over £1,000.
Posting on her TikTok account @weir_home, Jenna shared a clip of the amazing renovations, admitting: 'I can't believe we managed to do all of this ourselves.'
Jenna described how she managed to achieve the monochrome minimalist look without breaking the bank.
She and her partner Callum carried out all the labour costs themselves, including fitting and painting the decking, adding furniture and decorations.
The couple paid £200 for rolls of grass, and £180 for a new 6ft fence. The decking kit cost £550, but saved on manual costs by installing it themselves.
Speaking to Gardeners World, Jenna said: 'A lot of my garden decor finds are from B&M and Home Bargains including the fence and decking paint which was from B&M.
'Our glass solar fence lights were a find from Poundland and our beautiful U-shape garden set was from a business local to me called Modish Furnishings who regularly do sales.'
Describing the process of renovation, she added: 'When me and my husband moved into our new build property, the soil in our garden wasn't very good and the ground quickly became filled with weeds, so it needed a lot of TLC before we even started laying out grass.
'As we didn't have the finances at the time to start our garden properly, we opted to lay grass all over so we had a place to sit.
'We kept the original slabs the builder had laid for going in and out the back door and erected a 6ft fence for privacy to replace the 3ft one the builder had originally put in.
'After having the grass for nearly a year, we then started our decking transformation.
'The decking was erected at the top of the grass with a white stone border. We then began painting the fences with a stunning Cuprinol natural stone, as well as fitting a 'green wall' for more privacy in this area.
'During the renovation, we discovered we had a dead patch which ran along the side of our patio doors so we replaced this with large white pebbles and topiary balls before finalising the rest of the garden furniture and decor– and I still love the way it turned out!'

Ant and Dec's iconic show available to stream on demand for first time ever

The Newcastle based children's TV show will be available to stream in full across the UK later this year, decades after its BBC debut. Almost four decades after its initial television appearance, Byker Grove is set to make a comeback later this year. However, instead of returning to its original broadcaster, the BBC, it will be aired on an alternative channel. ‌ The series, filmed in Newcastle, first graced CBBC screens back in 1989 and quickly became a hit with viewers. ‌ Both youngsters and their parents were captivated by the adventures of the Grove's members, who were actually based in Benwell, not Byker. The show boasted a star-studded cast including Ant and Dec, whose characters PJ and Duncan were beloved by fans. They shared screen time with other familiar faces such as Donna Air and Jill Halfpenny, and were part of the unforgettable 'he can't see man!' paintballing scene. ‌ Ant and Dec left the show in the mid-90s to embark on a music career. The turn of the millennium brought heartbreak for viewers when Geoff, the group's leader, tragically died in a fire, and Andrew Hayden-Smith's character Ben was killed off in a hit-and-run incident a few years later, reports Chronicle Live. ‌ Byker Grove ended in 2006, but in a surprising twist in 2023, Ant and Dec revealed that their company Mitre Studios were collaborating with Fulwell73 to reboot the series under the new title, Byker. The buzz surrounding the return of Byker Grove has been palpable since its initial reveal, yet there's been little in the way of updates until now. ‌ Fans craving a dose of nostalgia can rejoice as the show is currently available for streaming across the UK on STV Player and is set to make its debut on ITVX later this year, thanks to a co-exclusivity agreement with Mitre Studios. Richard Williams, STV's Managing Director of Audience: Video and Technology, couldn't hide his excitement about the show's comeback. He said: "Just when you thought the 90s revival might have been slowing down, we've only gone and brought back one of the seminal TV shows of the decade. ‌ "Byker Grove was an integral part of so many British childhoods and we're delighted that those original viewers – now of a slightly more mature vintage – can relive all the nostalgic action on STV Player. And if any Gen Z viewers want to find out who really started the baggy trousers trend, look no further than Byker Grove!" Ed Sleeman, MD at Mitre Studios, also expressed his delight: "We're delighted to be teaming up with ITVX and STV Player to give a new generation of viewers the opportunity to watch this iconic series from the start and to see where it all began for Ant and Dec." Stream Byker Grove for free on STV Player now (UK-wide) and on ITVX later this year.

My council house garden was a former drug den with hidden dangers – I transformed it with £1.7k gifts from strangers

A MUM has transformed her council estate garden with the help of £1k from strangers and gifts worth over £700. When Ste f anie Lockyer first posted a video showing off her 'POS garden ', she never expected it to blow up. 2 She was just a 36-year-old mum from a council house in the West Country, furious at the council, frustrated with the mess she'd inherited and feeling totally defeated. But fast forward just a few weeks and her TikTok account, started with fewer than 1,000 followers, has racked up over 24,000 fans, hundreds in donations, and more love from strangers than she ever imagined. She claimed her garden was a dangerous dumping ground littered with drug baggies and broken glass. Stefanie has now transformed it into a safe, colourful haven full of life, laughter, and Lego. 'Honestly,' she told her followers, 'if someone had told me that one video would get 200,000 views, I'd have thought you were cuckoo bananas.' It all started when Stefanie, who originally joined TikTok to help pay off some debt, decided to vent her frustration after moving into a new council home. The house came with a huge back garden that her 10-year-old son dreamed of using for a birthday party. But the dream was quickly shattered when they discovered the garden was far from safe. She said: 'It was basically an old drug den. 'There were baggies, broken glass, even dodgy old smug bits buried in the ground. Not what you want when your kid's asking for a party and a paddling pool.' After a particularly maddening encounter with a council worker who allegedly laughed in her face, Stephanie was determined to take matters into her own hands. Kids will have hours of fun in the garden with The Range's bargain buy - it also lights up, plays music & is on sale She posted her now-viral video, calling out the state of the garden and something incredible happened. Her TikTok blew up, strangers rallied behind her, and before long, a JustGiving page was set up. In just under a month, her supporters had donated over £1,000, with even more pouring in through her Amazon wishlist and PayPal. In total, kind-hearted strangers sent over £700 worth of gifts to help turn the ex-drug den into a dream play space. And it's not just your basic gardening gear, we're talking everything from toys and lights to a rainbow windmill. Among the donated goodies were a children's play sand set (£18.99), a helium canister for balloons (£29.99) and a pet hammock (£17.99). There was also a bundle of Lego sets, chalk, fidget toys and even a night vision toy. Plus cute garden decorations like a bamboo wind chime, a red telephone box bird feeder, and outdoor string lights to wrap around her now-iconic big trees One follower told her: 'Those trees are incredible – get some fairy lights up on them, babe.' And that's exactly what she did. She still has £161 worth of goods ready to be purchased. Stefanie's account, a raw mix of chaos, cheeky humour and real-life parenting, has struck a chord with thousands. She admitted she was "c***" at social media and did it to "p*** the council off". What started as a rant has now turned into a community project and a journey of unexpected pride. Stefanie now plans to carry on documenting her family's adventures, and is already setting her sights on the next big mission, which is giving her husband a blowout 40th birthday bash. But for now, she's basking in the joy of seeing her son finally enjoying a back garden of his own. She shared her son now has a paddling pool, toys to play with and a safe space to be a kid, saying it's all she ever wanted And thanks to the kindness of strangers, that dream has finally come true. 8 must-have plants to brighten up your garden Nick Hamilton owner of Barnsdale Gardens has shared his favourite plants and flowers you should consider adding to your garden, borders and pots. Tricyrtis A spectacular plant that gives a real exotic feel to any garden with its orchid-like, spotted flowers giving the impression that this plant should be tender but it is 'as tough as old boots!'. Penstemon I love this plants genus of because most will flower all summer and autumn. They'll grow in sun or semi-shade in a well drained soil and produce a non-stop display of tubular flowers in an array of colours and colour combination to suit all tastes. Luzula sylvatica 'Marginata' With the evergreen leaves edged with yellow it's great asset is that it will grow in sun or shade in any type of soil and is great as groundcover in the hardest spot to fill - dry shade. Eryngium x zabelii 'Big Blue' A stunning, nectar-rich plant that will feed the beneficial insects in your garden. Leave the flowerheads once they have turned brown because they look stunning with winter frost and snow, extending the plant's interest period. Sarcococca hookeriana 'Winter Gem' If you need winter scent then look no further than this compact, evergreen shrub. The scent is stunning and the evergreen leaves create an excellent backdrop for the summer flowers. Cornus sanguinea 'Anny's Winter Orange' A dwarf version of 'Midwinter Fire' the very colourful stems create a stunning winter display, particularly on sunny days. Rosa 'Noisette Carnee' A very well-behaved climbing rose that is perfect for training over an arch, pergola or gazebo. The small, 'noisette' flowers are blush-pink and produce the most amazing clove scent constantly from June to November. Sanguisorba hakusanensis 'Lilac Squirrel' I've never seen a squirrel with a drooping, shaggy lilac tail, but this variety will give your garden an unusual and different look throughout summer. It does need a moisture retentive soil but will grow in sun or semi-shade.

Love Island fans accuse ‘panicking producers' of ‘protecting' girl after explosive row – and giving her ‘winners' edit'

LOVE Island viewers have kicked off and accused bosses of favouring a certain girl in the villa. While there's no evidence of any ITV2 producers meddling in the process, fans have come to their own conclusions concerning Movie Night. 6 6 Viewers are questioning editing decisions when it comes to Helena and how she is being portrayed against Shakira. Fans have flooded the comments section of the site and claimed that producers have deliberately set up the brunette to look a certain way. In particular, why Helena's negative comments about Shakira were not aired during the infamous Love Island movie spectacular. Sofa detectives are claiming bosses are 'protecting' blonde air hostess Helena. During Movie Night, contestants were shown controversial scenes of all their antics that they might not have wanted to be shown. This included private conversations about other people in the villa, flirty interactions and kisses from Casa Amor. One user on Reddit wrote: "There's no good couples this year and we're already in the run up to the end of the season, so the producers are probably trying to push the couples that have been together longer, like Helena/Harry and Meg/Dejon. "They both got much lighter edits than they could have gotten on movie night!" A second assumed: "Producers are weird AF for putting in every clip of Shakira talking about Helena but left out half the clips of the sh*t Helena did that made Shakira feel that way." A third fan mused: "I just don't understand why the compilation of Shakira was shown without showing all the cr*p Helena has pulled that caused Shakira to act that way. Come on! Helena has been so nasty and Shakira was just reacting to it." "How they didn't show the 'shall I wear Shakira's bikini' clip is beyond me. Lmao," wrote another baffled fan. Love Island erupts in vicous row as FOUR girls confront 'mean girl' on Movie Night - and boy is forced to step in "They are basically protecting Helena," remarked another. "Makes me think the producers are protecting her because the couples are being torn apart and they need to give SOMEONE the winners' edit. "For the first time there's no front-running couple (or even anything remotely close to it) so near to the end and I imagine they've decided they need to push for one," penned another. During one clip, Shakira's comments on Helena were shown to the rest of the group. The moment showed a series of clips where Shakira slammed Helena for her behaviour. One clip showed her telling Toni that Helena needs to take off her bikini because it doesn't fit properly, another showed Shakira agreeing with Harrison after he called Helena Harry's "bit on the side". It came after Helena repeatedly tried to interfere with Shakira's relationship, from whispering sexual comments in his ear during the Heart Rate challenge, to taking swipes at Shakira and even asking Harry to the Hideaway while he was in a couple with Shakira. Love Island continues on ITV2 and is available to stream on ITVX. 6 6 6 6
