Mayor: MBKS pushes for parking digitalisation to replace coupon system

KUCHING (June 29): The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is pushing for the digitalisation of its parking system, aiming to scrap the use of physical coupons.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said they are looking at introducing a mobile application to facilitate the payment of parking fees within the MBKS jurisdiction.
'This proposal will be submitted to the State Cabinet for approval in July, and is expected to take form in either July or August.
'We are not trying to make things difficult, but digitalisation will offer greater convenience and is more friendly to users,' he said during his Facebook live session 'Shall WEE Talk' yesterday.
In the process of digitalising the parking system, Wee said the personnel involved with issuing overparking compounds will be gradually reduced.
He felt that it is time to embrace digitalisation, a transformation that people of all ages cannot run away from.
On the implementation of e-invoicing and expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST), the Mayor said the government should take the people into consideration before introducing any new policy.
He said people are bound to voice their dissatisfaction if the government implements a new policy without seeking consultations from the relevant stakeholders.
'When a new policy is implemented in a rush, enterprises and people on the ground will find it hard to adapt to it, thereby eroding public confidence on the government of the day.
'Government policies are not experimental trials but get to decide the survival of enterprises and the livelihoods of our people,' he added.
To make sure that people can cushion the impact of the rising cost of living, Wee said the government should work on ensuring that its policies would not create further financial burden amid the current economic slowdown.
He added that the government must ensure financial stability while introducing new policies so that people can have better planning for their livelihoods.
'It is not that we cannot cooperate, but we need sufficient time to plan and adapt to new policies.'
As such, he called for comprehensive consultation and planning from the government before it introduces and implements any policy to avoid protesting voices from the various communities.

MRCA targets RM120m transaction value from Franchise Expo Malaysia 2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Retail Chain Association (MRCA) is targeting RM120 million in transaction value for 8th Franchise Expo Malaysia 2025 (FEM 2025), up 20% from the RM100 million achieved in 2024. MRCA president Datuk Ken Phua said the higher target is driven by record-high international participation and strong local demand. 'We have added 10 overseas countries, including the US, Japan, and the UK. Our existing partners from Thailand and China have also expanded their booths. We are almost fully occupied, which points to a very eventful and successful expo,' he said at a press conference on FEM 2025 today. Furthermore, Phua said, Malaysia's role as Asean chair this year supports regional participation in the event. MRCA welcomes Tourism Malaysia as a supporting partner to connect FEM with the tourism ecosystem. 'Tourists visiting Malaysia are not just here for sightseeing but also for cultural and shopping experiences. They are potential franchise investors too,' Phua said. FEM 2025 will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from Aug 21 to 23. The three-day event is expected to attract about 18,000 visitors and will feature 364 booths across four halls. Phua said this year's theme, 'Invest in the Future', highlights opportunities in digitalisation, tourism recovery, and regional integration. 'The theme captures the essence of what lies ahead. Strong consumer spending and the strengthening ringgit have created fertile ground for local businesses to thrive.' Turning to other issues, Phua said MRCA and five other business associations met with the Ministry of Finance last Thursday to discuss the planned expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST). He added that it had a dialogue with the government to consider deferring or adjusting the SST expansion. 'Eight per cent is really, really very, very significant to our costs. We barely make about 10% to 20% in gross profit. 'So with all these costs involved, our net profit will either dwindle or, in the worst situations, some may have to close their businesses.' Phua said the SST, particularly its application to rental costs, would significantly increase operating expenses for franchisors and franchisees. 'Many of whom manage multiple outlets. Can you imagine the impact that will be having on their operating costs as well as the labour costs that has increased? We are also going to be paying the foreigners 2% EPF as well,' he added. Phua said the government has listened to some of their concerns and already raised the SST registration threshold from RM500,000 to RM1 million. 'But it is not good enough. With SCCIM, ourselves and many other associations, our plea is to have it, in fact, deferred or the threshold level up to RM3 million.' Additionally, Phua said it has also requested a deferment of the electricity tariff increase that is set to start from today. 'At this point, manufacturers, including those exporting, are already facing tariff pressures from the US. A rate hike now is not timely, especially when we are encouraging more entrepreneurial activities.'

Expanded SST: Ops Kesan 4.0 to ensure businesses do not raise prices indiscriminately
KOTA KINABALU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will use three approaches to ensure that Ops Kesan 4.0, which coincides with the implementation of the expanded Sales and Service Tax on Tuesday (July 1), will run smoothly. Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said this includes implementing data collection of prices and service charges by its officers. "The data will from the basis of comparing prices and service charges before and after the Sales and Service Tax (SST) rate review," he said at a media conference after an engagement session with Sabah small and micro traders here on Monday (June 30). He said the standard operating procedure for managing complaints on charges, prices and supplies was a good approach to ensure the operation achieves its objectives, adding that the ministry would take stern action against traders who raise prices indiscriminately, including fines of up to RM100,000 or three years' jail or both for individuals and fines of RM500,000 for companies. On Ops Kesan 4.0, which comes under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, he this is to ensure traders do not indiscriminately raise prices of items and services, which violates the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. The scope of enforcement includes goods and services involved in the SST rate review, including monitoring of goods not involved in the review, such as basic necessities, he added. – Bernama
