Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione retiring after 27 years
Castiglione's retirement will end the longest current tenure for an athletic director in major college sports.
Castiglione, 67, plans to stay on as athletic director emeritus following the hiring of his successor. A news conference is scheduled for Tuesday morning to officially make the announcement. University president Joseph Harroz Jr., in a letter to the OU community, said Castiglione's retirement date is June 30, 2028, making for 30 years, according to a report from KWTV-News 9 in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma has captured 26 national championships and 117 league titles during his 27 years in Norman, which included the transition from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference.
Castiglione was named the athletic director of the year by Sports Business Journal in 2009 and shared the award in 2018. The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics named him its top AD in 2000 and 2018.
The Sooners won a national championship in football in 2000 and reached the men's basketball Final Four in 2002 and 2016. The softball program has captured eight national titles since 2000, and the women's basketball team made the Final Four in 2002, 2009 and 2010.
Including his five years as the AD at Missouri before taking over at OU, a total of 32 of his former employees have gone on to become athletic directors or commissioners, per ESPN.

The Oklahoma Sooners will open fall camp on July 30, and star pass rusher R Mason Thomas is expecting big things out of a pair of young defensive ends. Speaking at SEC media days last week, Thomas didn't hesitate when he was asked who he expects to break out this season at defensive end. Adepoju Adebawore and Taylor Wein. They have a chance to make noise on the Sooners' depth chart in 2025. Both players were a part of the 2023 recruiting class. Adebawore was a highly coveted five-star signee. Wein was a three-star prospect who committed to Oklahoma late in the 2023 cycle. Though they may have been viewed differently as high school prospects, both Wein and Adebawore have impressed this offseason. Thomas said the two players are "hungry" and they "want it." Thomas even said it wouldn't be surprising to see either player go get five sacks this season because of how hard they're working to make an impact. The Sooners will deploy a rotation at defensive end. With Ethan Downs off to the NFL, Oklahoma brought in former five-star prospect Marvin Jones Jr., who spent time at Georgia and Florida State. But Adebawore and Wein have an opportunity to earn significant snaps in the Sooners' defense this season. Jaguars start Travis Hunter at WR, CB reps coming soon
On the first day of training camp, the answer to questions regarding whether Travis Hunter would play offense or defense for the Jacksonville Jaguars was unchanged. Both. Hunter was an early arrival on the practice field in a bright teal No. 12 jersey, the color signifying he'd play with the offense on Wednesday. Hunter and wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett drilled hand usage and line-of-scrimmage release technique before team sessions started. "Within the first six practices or so, he will (play defense)," Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said. "You want to give him a couple days offense, a couple days defense and then give him the opportunity to go flip-flop within the same practice. Then that'll kind of become the norm. That will become the norm of how we operate." Hunter and 2024 first-round pick Brian Thomas Jr. rotated through reps on short comeback routes and in-cutting patterns in the opening portion of group position work. He briefly aligned with defensive backs during a special teams walkthrough without live reps. The offensive-minded Coen said last month defensive coaches already were trying to get more time with Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner at Colorado, where he starred at wide receiver and cornerback. His two-way capability inspired Coen and general manager James Gladstone to move up in the draft to select Hunter second overall. "(Defensive backs coach Ron Milus) Milo came up to me after practice and said, 'Can we have him more?'" Coen told reporters in June. "And so that's a good thing. Just the movement skills. You can definitely see how natural it is for him. Auburn basketball's Tahaad Pettiford arrested, charged with DUI

AUBURN — Tahaad Pettiford, the lone returnee from Auburn basketball's latest Final Four squad, has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the Lee County Sherriff's Office. Pettiford, 19, was booked at midnight Saturday and has been released on a $1,000 bond, according to the sherriff's office arrest database. According to Alabama state law, persons under the age of 21 with a blood alcohol concentration of .02% or higher can be charged with DUI. 'We are aware of the situation, and we will handle internally with Tahaad and his family," Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl said in a statement Saturday morning. "We take these matters seriously and will learn and grow from it moving forward.' A rising sophomore, Pettiford shined in his first season on the Plains as the Tigers' third-leading scorer, averaging 11.6 points and 3.0 assists per game. During Auburn's run to the Final Four, he was vital, averaging 17.3 points between the Round of 64 and Elite Eight. He scored 23 and 20 points, respectively, in Auburn's NCAA Tournament wins over Creighton and Michigan. This offseason, Pettiford entered the NBA Draft process, but ultimately withdrew his name May 28, despite an NBA Combine invitation and a handful of first-round projections.
