
These Rare Fork-Nosed Dogs Could Help Solve a Genetic Mystery in Humans
In a recent study, researchers say they've found the genetic mutation that causes these dogs to develop their characteristic split nose. They argue that similar mutations might also explain some cases of cleft lip and palate in humans.
An international research team conducted the study, including scientists from the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. They analyzed the genetics of some 2,000 dogs, eventually discovering several new gene variants linked to a dog's facial structure and size. One of these variants was found in the Turkish Pointer, also known as the Catalburun.
The mutation concerns the gene PDFGRA. The researchers say that the gene seems to help connect the two halves of the face and mouth during embryonic development, with the unique variant in Turkish Pointers explaining their split-nose appearance.
'This indicates that the gene might be involved in some cases of human orofacial clefts,' said study researcher Peter Savolainen, a canine geneticist at KTH, in a statement from the institute. 'While there are several genetic and environmental reasons behind orofacial clefts in humans, this study offers a clue to another factor.'
The team's findings were published earlier this March in the journal Genome Research.
Facial clefts, which can involve the lips and/or palate, are thought to occur in one out of every 700 births. If untreated, the condition can hamper a person's feeding and speaking and raise the risk of ear infections. These days, thankfully, it can usually be repaired very successfully with surgery. Most cases of facial clefts have no clear cause, though factors like smoking, diabetes, and the use of certain medications during pregnancy seem to increase the risk.
As their name suggests, Turkish Pointers have primarily been bred in select parts of Turkey. They're said to be incredibly good sniffers, but they're also rare, with only a few hundred specimens thought to be living today (the breed isn't even officially recognized by any kennel club). Their tiny population numbers do raise the risk of genetic disease, though this is an issue with purebred dogs in general. But these dogs and other rare breeds also make it easier for scientists to isolate genes and mutations relevant to human health, the authors say.
'Studying the very inbred dog breeds is an excellent tool for finding the genetic reason for many morphologic traits and diseases in humans,' Savolainen said. 'In humans there is just too much genetic variation, making it hard to identify exactly which genetic mutation causes a specific disease.'

How Business Leaders Can Help Rebuild Trust In Innovation
Dr. Michael Johnson, President of the New Jersey Innovation Institute. For those of us who work in the innovation economy, you might feel like innovation is being deprioritized right now. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is facing cuts. National Science Foundation (NSF) grant programs are shrinking. Higher education is under increasing political and economic pressure. Venture capital investment in deep tech and biotech has plummeted. In some industries, startups that once might have raised funding in days now sit in purgatory for months. Some experts have warned that failing to prioritize and fund innovation, such as scientific research, could leave a lasting effect that Americans feel "for decades to come." As I see it, they are not entirely wrong, but there are reasons for these shifts. A Broken Social Contract Look at the past 40 years of innovation from the perspective of the average American, and it's easy for me to see why trust has eroded. Pharmaceutical innovations, for example, have produced miracle drugs, but many of these therapies cost six figures and remain inaccessible to many Americans. Automation and globalization have shifted demand away from mid-level skills and reduced the number of middle-skill jobs in favor of higher-level skill jobs. Increased globalization has also had a major impact on factory communities in the U.S. After the increase in imported goods from China in the early 2000s, "Many U.S. manufacturing towns couldn't compete ... Those communities experienced higher unemployment, lower wages, higher use of food stamps, higher disability payments, higher rates of single parenthood and child poverty, and elevated mortality," the Wall Street Journal reported. At the same time, economic gains have largely consolidated at the top. For many Americans, innovation has meant progress for others and pain for them. Now, with AI threatening white-collar positions, office workers are also facing uncertainty around job security. The unspoken agreement behind the innovation economy was simple: Scientists and entrepreneurs would invent the future, and everyone would share in the benefits. But I believe that promise has fallen apart. We built unicorns instead of ladders, and when support eroded, we were shocked to find some of the public no longer on our side. In my view, we don't need less innovation, but we do need better innovation—and it needs to be human-centered, broadly distributed and explicitly designed to lift everyone. Here's what that looks like and how businesses can help. 1. Focus on serving everyone. We, as leaders, can shift our focus toward solving problems that affect everyday people. That means supporting research and developing technologies that improve healthcare access, reduce energy costs, expand educational opportunities and address community-level needs. I believe much of the public is more interested in manufacturing innovations that drop the price of essentials, like blood pressure medication, than in developing new, expensive therapeutics they can't access. We can also advocate for federal agencies like the NIH and the NSF to reward translational science and public impact, not just academic publication. Universities can elevate researchers who produce solutions and not just citations. 2. Don't forget about blue-collar workers. We shouldn't equate success with becoming a white-collar professional. Not everyone will be a doctor, lawyer or software engineer, and that is perfectly fine. For too long, I believe the innovation economy has often celebrated a narrow definition of achievement, one that sidelines the millions of Americans who work with their hands, build physical things and keep essential systems running. Over the past 50 years, many of these jobs have been offshored or automated. But these are not disposable workers. They are the backbone of our economy and critical to our communities. I believe we need to develop innovations that create real, durable jobs for tradespeople, factory workers and front-line professionals—jobs that offer salaries capable of meeting basic needs without government assistance. This means building: • Human-centered automation and robotics that enhance physical labor rather than replace it • Intelligent tools and platforms that make trades work more efficient, safer and higher paid • Industries of the future, like clean manufacturing, modular construction and precision agriculture, that are built from the ground up to include and empower these workers If we want to recognize the dignity in all work, we must design innovations around the people who do it. That starts with recognizing their value and building a future that includes them on purpose. 3. Build real solutions that improve daily life. Innovation should not be measured by the number of patents filed or the amount of capital raised. I believe it should be judged by how directly it improves people's lives. For business leaders, this means building real solutions: technologies, systems and services that address the problems people actually face every day. This might include looking for ways to lower the cost of prescription drugs, reduce heating and cooling bills, cut the time it takes to get a doctor's appointment or improve public services. I believe what our institutions need is a new mandate: Focus on solving real problems that matter to everyday people, and do it with urgency, transparency and humility. When innovation is visible, useful and human-centered, it earns back public trust. That's how we restore belief in progress. Trust isn't built by asking people to imagine the future, but by delivering results that improve their lives today. Final Thoughts Innovation in America is not dead, but I do think it is misaligned. We have created incredible technologies, yet we have failed to ensure they serve the many. We have built a machine that doesn't work well for everyone. The path forward is not to retreat from innovation but to democratize it. We must restore trust, rebuild the social contract and make innovation a project that lifts all boats, not just the yachts. NIH Launches Agency-Wide Plan for Autoimmune Research
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has unveiled its first agency-wide strategic plan to address autoimmune diseases, supporting research on preclinical autoimmunity, early diagnosis, and innovative therapies. An estimated 23.5-50 million Americans are living with one or more autoimmune diseases. The initiative follows a congressional directive in 2023 that led to the creation of the NIH Office of Autoimmune Disease Research (OADR) within the Office of Research on Women's Health. The office convened a committee with representatives from multiple NIH institutes and centers to develop the plan, gathering input from researchers, clinicians, patient advocates, and people living with autoimmune diseases to define research priorities. The initiative 'is long overdue,' said Sonia Sharma, PhD, of the Center for Autoimmunity and Inflammation at La Jolla Institute for Immunology in La Jolla, California, in an interview with Medscape Medical News . 'Individually, some folks may consider these rare diseases; but as a collective, they are not rare and they are increasing.' While NIH investment in autoimmune disease research has increased from $822 million in 2014 to more than $1 billion in 2024, according to the NIH Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools (RePORT), 'current funding levels are not proportional to the rising prevalence of autoimmune diseases, highlighting a significant gap,' said OADR Director Victoria Shanmugam, MBBS, in a video introducing the initiative. The launch of this plan comes at a precarious time for medical research funding. Over 2480 NIH grants, totaling $8.7 billion, have been canceled as of mid-June, according to Scientific American . The proposed Fiscal Year 2026 budget also includes a $18 billion cut to the NIH, a nearly 40% reduction from the current NIH budget. It's unclear if these cuts could affect this initiative, and the announcement included no funding details. The 5-year plan, announced on July 21, 2025, will run from 2026 through 2030 and has the following priorities: Accelerate scientific discovery in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and cure of autoimmune diseases. Promote research to enhance health for people living with and at risk for autoimmune diseases. Support research to understand the full complexity of autoimmune diseases. Build and maintain capacity for autoimmune disease research. Build and strengthen partnerships and interdisciplinary collaboration across the autoimmune disease community. One research area emphasized in the plan is preclinical immunity, referred to as the prodrome, where autoantibodies and other markers of autoimmunity are present, yet symptoms have not yet developed. 'That's the black box of autoimmunity,' Sharma said. Studying the preclinical phases of disease could lead to earlier diagnosis, treatment, and potentially prevention, she added. The plan also included five 'crosscutting themes': develop infrastructure, support multimodal data-driven approaches, promote engagement of all patient populations, support community partnerships, and harness technologies to advance autoimmune disease research. Currently, the strategic plan lacks detailed timelines, but experts anticipate greater specificity as it advances. 'We would like to see more clarity around a timeline with specific deliverables, but that can't occur until they understand what and where the resources will be located,' said Molly Murray, president and CEO of the Autoimmune Association, in a statement to Medscape Medical News . She emphasized the need for 'specific, measurable milestones,' particularly for early disease detection and testing. 'We also want to see greater detail on how NIH will partner with existing centers of excellence in autoimmune research, and how patient voices will be consistently integrated into research design and priority-setting,' she continued. 'Ultimately, we're looking for this plan to become more than a document, but rather a catalyst for sustained coordination, investment, and accountability across the entire NIH enterprise.'
