The Hindu3 days ago
Ahead of the next year's Assembly polls, DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday launched his party's public outreach programme 'Tamil Nadu under One Roof', aimed at enrolling a two crore members and bringing people together 'to protect Tamil land, language, and pride.'
Mr. Stalin, accompanied by Health Minister Ma. Subramanian and senior party leaders, went door to door in Alwarpet, Chennai, meeting people. In a message on X, he said Tamil Nadu should transcend narrow sectarian considerations to protect its land, language, and pride.
'In the next 45 days, Ministers, district secretaries, MLAs, MPs, and senior leaders will take part in the campaign,' he said.
The Chief Minister's visit evoked great enthusiasm among the people. During his interactions with them, he distributed a questionnaire and elicited their responses. People also expressed the need to protect Tamil Nadu and its language to ensure the welfare of Tamils. He said the DMK government had been making every effort to safeguard the language, culture, and land of Tamil Nadu.
People also urged the Chief Minister to take measures to protect the interests of farmers, weavers, fishermen, and other sections of society. Women told him that the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai scheme had ensured their self-respect, and that Tamil Nadu was leading in education, industrial development, and women's welfare. They also emphasised the importance of securing a bright future for the state's youth.
People responded positively to the question on whether Tamil Nadu would be led by a Chief Minister who would not be intimidated by pressure from Delhi and would provide a stable government. They expressed their willingness to participate in the DMK's campaign and wanted Mr. Stalin to continue as Chief Minister to transform Tamil Nadu into a major economic power.

L-G Sinha, Union Minister Goyal pay tributes to Syama Prasad on 124th birth anniversary in Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, and Textiles Piyush Goyal on Sunday (July 6, 2025) lauded the role of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, for integrating J&K into India on his 124th birth anniversary. J&K L-G Sinha announced to launch a two-year celebratory campaign to honour the life and legacy of Dr. Mookerjee and his role in strengthening national unity and advocating 'One Nation, One Constitution' for a brighter future of J&K. 'Mookerjee Ji was one of the key architects of modern India and a visionary statesman, educationist and fearless Parliamentarian whose ideals continue to shape the destiny of India,' L-G Sinha said. He said Mookerjee sacrificed his life for unification of J&K with India and was a proponent of 'One Nation, One Constitution, One Symbol' and opposed Article 370. 'His martyrdom in Srinagar while fighting for J&K's complete integration, remained a defining moment in the nation's history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled Mookerjee's dream 66 years after his martyrdom,' he added. Recalling the role of Mookerjee in integrating J&K into India, Union Minister Goyal said the Centre's decision of August 5, 2019 to do away with Article 370 and 35A finally led to the complete integration of J&K into India as envisaged by him. 'Mookerjee quit the Jawaharlal Nehru government as a Minister in 1953. He visited J&K without a permit and died under mysterious circumstances. His sacrifice, however, did not go to waste. After August 5, 2019, all laws are applicable in J&K,' he said. Mookerji died in a jail in J&K 1953 during the government of then J&K Prime Minister Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah. No regional party or ruling National Conference attended any function organised for the Jan Sangh leader. Mr. Goyal also praised people of Kashmir for standing against terrorism and lending support to the 'Operation Sindoor'', which India launched after the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead. 'People of J&K showed to the world that such terror attacks will not make this place stop. This terror attack was not only on tourists but also on the economy of J&K. Pakistan was given a strong reply through the 'Operation Sindoor' for supporting terrorists. Like Maoism, we will end terrorism too with the help of Kashmiris. There is a mismatch between what Pakistan says and does. Pakistan needs to take concrete measures against terrorists and their infrastructure and hand over wanted terrorists to India to prove they mean what they say,' Mr. Goyal added. Meanwhile, the Union Minister, during a separate function in Srinagar, said the Union Territory will soon get a dedicated design and packaging hub and a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence to boost the industrial and agricultural sectors. 'The Omar Abdullah government in J&K and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government at the Centre will jointly work towards reviving tourism and trade in the UT,' Mr. Goyal said. He embarked on measures to integrate J&K into national and global markets through value addition and sustainable development models. 'We are exploring a public-private partnership model to make the Centre of Excellence a hub of new technologies, product research, packaging design, and food processing solutions,' he said. He said his Ministry was exploring solar rooftop installations at the industrial estate in Lassipora, Pulwama, which has 10 lakh square feet of built-up space. 'If we use green energy for production, our exports can get premium value as certified eco-friendly products,' he said. He also underlined that there was a need to maintain a minimum import price of ₹75 on imported apples with a 50% duty to ensure Kashmiri apples remain competitive. 'We import apples worth ₹140 crore. But our own growers should not suffer. This must be a win-win for farmers and consumers,' he said.

Buried tales of past violence from Chemmani

A quaint village in northern Jaffna is currently throwing up evidence of Sri Lanka's gross human rights abuses and poor criminal justice system, buried in the sands of time, holding within its tombs inconvenient truths the island has long preferred to keep buried. The world watches Sri Lanka with keen eyes as evidence of a mass grave re-emerges from Chemmani, in the Tamil heartland of Jaffna. It has refused to stay buried, a quarter century later. Chemmani is among the known mass graves, and a 26-year-long war is most likely to have birthed other sites, still unknown and unidentified. Bearing war's painful legacy, these mass graves quietly hold the evidence of people killed and buried during years of conflict, a stark reminder of an island's gruesome past, human rights violations and the absence of justice and accountability. In February 2025, construction workers unearthed human remains while clearing a land adjacent to the Chemmani-Sindupathi Hindu burial ground. Following a police referral, the Jaffna Magistrate Court initiated a preliminary investigation on February 20 and ordered exhumation and excavation of the remains. On June 2, an expert team led by Prof Raj Somadeva, a top forensic archaeologist, unearthed 19 skeletal remains. As of July 5, ongoing excavations have recovered 45 skeletons, including those of children, all temporarily stored at the University of Jaffna. Like most mass graves, until 1998, Chemmani was unknown to the world and was shrouded in mystery. It was first mentioned by Lance Corporal Somaratne Rajapakse, one of those accused for the rape and murder of an 18-year-old Tamil school girl, Krishanthi Kumaraswamy. The court served the death sentence on Rajapakse and five other soldiers directly involved in the case as well as the killing of three others. Testifying before the court, Rajapakse said hundreds of people who disappeared from the Jaffna peninsula after the military seized control during 1995-1996 were killed and buried in mass graves near Chemmani. Excavations in 1999 found 15 bodies, including two identified as men who had disappeared in excavations continue to unearth skeletal remains and reopen old wounds, renewing calls for international oversight into Sri Lanka's existing mass graves.

AIADMK will get absolute majority in 2026 Assembly poll: Palaniswami

Ahead of his State-wide tour, set to begin in Coimbatore on Monday, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday reiterated that his party would secure an 'absolute majority' and form the next government in the State in 2026. The people of Tamil Nadu wanted a change and were prepared to send home the DMK government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, which has reportedly not fulfilled a majority of electoral promises it had made to the people, the Leader of the Opposition said. 'Let us recall our achievements. We will certainly win in 2026. The AIADMK will get an absolute majority and form the government,' he said in an open letter to his partymen. The people, according to him, were angry at the corruption rampant in the DMK government. The educated youth were angry at Mr. Stalin for not having created employment, Mr. Palaniswami said. Electoral promises 'The Stalin government has not fulfilled a majority of the electoral promises it made to the people. So, the people of Tamil Nadu are quite angry,' Mr. Palaniswami contended. Underlining the lessons he had learnt from late AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa, Mr. Palaniswami said his only unfulfilled desire was to remove darkness from the lives of the people of Tamil Nadu and make the State shine. 'I am your general secretary. However, I am also the first of the partymen to work along with you,' he said. Referring to his 'Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom' campaign, which he is planning to undertake across Tamil Nadu, Mr. Palaniswami called upon his partymen to join the mission. 'After Puratchi Thalaivi Amma (her tenure), the AIADMK has been the ruling party and, later, the principal Opposition party. Thereby, a force that cannot be removed from the political landscape.' In another statement, Mr. Palaniswami criticised the DMK government's proposal to install LED screens at various places to showcase its achievements during the past four years. Referring to recent orders in this regard, the former Chief Minister said people in rural areas suffered without proper road and drainage facilities and electricity supply, among others. 'I urge the DMK government to drop the proposal that would waste the taxpayer's money,' he added.
