L-G Sinha, Union Minister Goyal pay tributes to Syama Prasad on 124th birth anniversary in Kashmir
J&K L-G Sinha announced to launch a two-year celebratory campaign to honour the life and legacy of Dr. Mookerjee and his role in strengthening national unity and advocating 'One Nation, One Constitution' for a brighter future of J&K.
'Mookerjee Ji was one of the key architects of modern India and a visionary statesman, educationist and fearless Parliamentarian whose ideals continue to shape the destiny of India,' L-G Sinha said.
He said Mookerjee sacrificed his life for unification of J&K with India and was a proponent of 'One Nation, One Constitution, One Symbol' and opposed Article 370.
'His martyrdom in Srinagar while fighting for J&K's complete integration, remained a defining moment in the nation's history. Prime Minister Narendra Modi fulfilled Mookerjee's dream 66 years after his martyrdom,' he added.
Recalling the role of Mookerjee in integrating J&K into India, Union Minister Goyal said the Centre's decision of August 5, 2019 to do away with Article 370 and 35A finally led to the complete integration of J&K into India as envisaged by him. 'Mookerjee quit the Jawaharlal Nehru government as a Minister in 1953. He visited J&K without a permit and died under mysterious circumstances. His sacrifice, however, did not go to waste. After August 5, 2019, all laws are applicable in J&K,' he said.
Mookerji died in a jail in J&K 1953 during the government of then J&K Prime Minister Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah. No regional party or ruling National Conference attended any function organised for the Jan Sangh leader.
Mr. Goyal also praised people of Kashmir for standing against terrorism and lending support to the 'Operation Sindoor'', which India launched after the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 civilians dead.
'People of J&K showed to the world that such terror attacks will not make this place stop. This terror attack was not only on tourists but also on the economy of J&K. Pakistan was given a strong reply through the 'Operation Sindoor' for supporting terrorists. Like Maoism, we will end terrorism too with the help of Kashmiris. There is a mismatch between what Pakistan says and does. Pakistan needs to take concrete measures against terrorists and their infrastructure and hand over wanted terrorists to India to prove they mean what they say,' Mr. Goyal added.
Meanwhile, the Union Minister, during a separate function in Srinagar, said the Union Territory will soon get a dedicated design and packaging hub and a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence to boost the industrial and agricultural sectors. 'The Omar Abdullah government in J&K and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government at the Centre will jointly work towards reviving tourism and trade in the UT,' Mr. Goyal said.
He embarked on measures to integrate J&K into national and global markets through value addition and sustainable development models. 'We are exploring a public-private partnership model to make the Centre of Excellence a hub of new technologies, product research, packaging design, and food processing solutions,' he said.
He said his Ministry was exploring solar rooftop installations at the industrial estate in Lassipora, Pulwama, which has 10 lakh square feet of built-up space. 'If we use green energy for production, our exports can get premium value as certified eco-friendly products,' he said.
He also underlined that there was a need to maintain a minimum import price of ₹75 on imported apples with a 50% duty to ensure Kashmiri apples remain competitive. 'We import apples worth ₹140 crore. But our own growers should not suffer. This must be a win-win for farmers and consumers,' he said.

Chirag Paswan Declares He Will Contest All 243 Seats In Bihar Elections
Saran: Claiming that there was a "conspiracy" to thwart his foray into Bihar politics, Union minister Chirag Paswan on Sunday asserted that he would, nonetheless, contest the upcoming assembly polls in the state. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president, who is a junior NDA partner in the state, made the statement at a rally in Saran district. "I want to take Bihar to new heights. I visualise a future in which our boys and girls will not need to go outside in search of greener pastures; rather, people from other states will come here in search of better education and employment opportunities," said Mr Paswan. He claimed that his passion made many people uneasy. "These people are content with having secured their own future, and they worry about my vision of 'Bihar First, Bihari First' catching the public imagination. So they are involved in a conspiracy to hinder my involvement in state politics. They are trying to create confusion in the minds of the people by asking whether Chirag Paswan will contest the assembly polls himself," Mr Paswan. "I want to put an end to such designs by proclaiming, from this glorious land of Saran, yes, I will contest the assembly polls. I will contest in all 243 seats. Every segment will see Chirag Paswan fighting with full intensity," said the 42-year-old, who has been denying that he had his eyes on the chief minister's chair. He, nonetheless, voiced "concern" over incidents like the murder of top industrialist Gopal Khemka a couple of days ago, and said it raised doubts over the ability of the Nitish Kumar government "which we support and which has so far enjoyed a reputation for good governance". "The upcoming elections are crucial. After winning these, we shall strive to create an atmosphere in which people can step out of their homes at any time without fear and security concerns," said Mr Paswan. He also appeared peeved at his estranged uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras getting a toehold with the offer of entry into the opposition INDIA bloc. Without mentioning the younger brother of his late father Ram Vilas Paswan by name, he recalled, "I was expelled from my own party and made to vacate my own house". Mr Paras had split late Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party in 2021, leaving Chirag, the then national president, isolated, and grabbed a berth in the Union cabinet. Before he was redeemed in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls of 2024, Chirag had to suffer the ignominy of vacating the 12, Janpath bungalow, that his late father had occupied for several years and which also served as the LJP office. The BJP's decision to make peace with Chirag had caused Paras to resign from the Union cabinet ahead of the Lok Sabha polls and, in April this year, quit the NDA. Chirag Paswan also trained his guns at RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav by mocking the 'Chhatra Yuva Sansad' drive, where free pens are being distributed among the youth. "Those who had snatched away people's land with the promise of jobs are now distributing pens," said Mr Paswan, in an obvious reference to the railway scam involving Mr Yadav's father, Lalu Prasad, the RJD president. The Union minister also said, "I am fully in support of Bihari youth's demand for a domicile policy. The rights of our young men and women must be protected. But it must be pointed out that the domicile policy, brought in 2006, was scrapped in 2023, when the RJD was sharing power, its de facto leader was the Deputy Chief Minister, and another senior leader was the education minister." Mr Paswan also referred to the 'inheritance tax' proposed by the Congress, an RJD ally, in its manifesto for the Lok Sabha polls, and urged the people to be wary of the opposition coalition.

Supreme Court Agrees To Hear Plea Challenging Electoral Roll Revision In Poll-Bound Bihar
Last Updated: The matter was mentioned by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, who sought an urgent hearing, citing concerns over the legality and timing of the revision process. The Supreme Court agreed to hear on July 10 a plea challenging the Election Commission's decision to hold a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. The matter was mentioned by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, who sought an urgent hearing, citing concerns over the legality and timing of the revision process. The apex court also allowed the petitioner to serve advance notice to the Election Commission of India (ECI), which has been made a party in the case. The petition questioned the poll body's decision amid ongoing concerns about the transparency of the electoral roll revision, ahead of the upcoming state assembly polls. Notably, several opposition parties also approached the top court against the revision of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. TMC MP Mahua Moitra and RJD's Manoj Jha moved the top court seeking to quash the EC order, claiming that it violated the Constitution. Besides Moitra and Jha, several NGOs have also petitioned the court against the special intensive revision (SIR), even as the poll body issued a statement on Sunday saying it has not changed its instructions on the revision process.

Bihar Voter List Revision row: Mahua Moita alleges EC to target Bengal next, moves SC
Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Mahua Moitra has alleged that the Election Commission of India's order for Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar is intended to deprive the bonafide young electorate from voting in this year's polling, and the panel's next target would be West Bengal. While Bihar goes to thepolls later this year, assembly elections in West Bengal are scheduled in 2026. The TMC will fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the West Bengal assembly elections. Moitra, the Lok Sabha MP from Krishnagar in West Bengal, has moved the Supreme Court challenging the order of the ECI. In the petition, Moitra has alleged that it violates several provisions of the Constitution and the Representation of People (RP) Act, 1950. "They (EC) have now introduced it to deprive the bonafide young electorate of Bihar, where elections are slated to be held shortly. Later, they will target Bengal, where elections are due in 2026," Moitra told news agency PTI. TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has already flagged this issue and talked about the EC's "diabolical game plan", she said. "Leaders of different opposition parties have also voiced concern over the move and asked EC not to go ahead with it. We have now moved the Supreme Court to intervene in the issue," the Krishnanagar MP said. Moitra said the order for the SIR was "aimed at disabling lakhs of bonafide voters who were born between July 1, 1987 and December 2, 2004 and help the BJP at the Centre. In her plea to the apex court, Moitra sought a direction to restrain the Election Commission of India from issuing similar orders in other states of the country. The EC on June 24 issued instructions to carry out an SIR in Bihar, apparently to weed out ineligible names and ensure only eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll. Attaching a video of her statement before PTI, Moitra later posted on X handle, "The @ECISVEEP is now @BJP4India 's arm - executing its Machiavellian plans on ground. Has forgotten its constitutional mandate to provide enabling services to citizens to exercise their franchise. The SIR order was in violation of Articles 14, 19(1)(a), 21, 325, 328 of the Constitution and provisions of the Representation of People (RP) Act, 1950 and Registration of Electors (RER) Rules, 1960, she said. Besides Moitra, several civil society organisations such as PUCL and the Association of Democratic Reforms, and activists like Yogendra Yadav have approached the top court against the ECI's direction. According to the ECI, the exercise was necessitated by rapid urbanisation, frequent migration, young citizens becoming eligible to vote, non-reporting of deaths, and inclusion of the names of foreign illegal immigrants. The ECI said it would scrupulously adhere to the constitutional and legal provisions when revising electoral rolls. Key Takeaways The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) order by the ECI is seen as politically motivated. Legal challenges against the ECI highlight concerns over voter disenfranchisement. This situation reflects broader tensions between political parties and electoral authorities in India.
