Robotic lifebuoys coming to Mumbai beaches? Not so soon, BMC scraps plan amid fallout with Turkey
This decision comes in the wake of backlash over Turkey's role in supporting Pakistan and India-Turkey fallout post Operation Sindoor. Boycott Turkey goods calls were raised and trade relations strained between the two countries after Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government criticised India's terror clampdown and strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, these bots were to be deployed at Girgaum Chowpatty, Shivaji Park Dadar, Juhu, Versova, Aksa and Gorai beaches. However, a change in plan was made after Turkey openly condemned India's action in response to April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Affirming the development related to procurement of robotic lifebuoys, Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani said that the civic body has scrapped the plan to procure robotic lifebuoys manufactured in Turkey.
Designed to assist lifeguards, the robotic lifebuoys would have been a part of search and rescue operation to save people from drowning.
Equipped with dual water jets, each unit of robotic lifebuoys possess a 10,000 mAh rechargeable battery. With a carriage capacity of 200 kg, these remotely-operated rescue machines can cover a distance of 800 metres into the sea at speeds up to 18 km/h. BMC officials further informed PTI that the bot can operate for about an hour after one charge.
Following the deal with the Eurasian country, the BMC faced strong criticism from political parties. BJP and Shiv Sena leaders had questioned and condemned the procurement of the machine from foreign supplier and had insisted on promoting indigenous production.

Jammu, Aug 2 (UNI) Amidst protest, Jammu and Kashmir unit of Shiv Sena (UBT) today protested against the BCCI for agreeing to play against the Pakistan in an upcoming Asia Cup stating that restoration of sports relations with Pakistan, which has been playing the dirty game of terrorism for the last four decades will be an act that hurts the public sentiments of the nation. "Restoration of sports relations with Pakistan, which has been playing the dirty game of terrorism for the last four decades in Jammu and Kashmir including Pulwama, Pahalgam attacks, will be an act that hurts the public sentiments of the nation, betting money during the match nourishes terrorism, when water, air space can be stopped, why sports relations?" said Manish Sahni, President, Shiv Sena (UBT) while leading the protest. Sahni led Shiv Sena activists demonstrated near the Muthi holding placards that read "Sports relations with the killers of Sindoor are intolerable", "Water and airspace stopped, why Cricket ?", "Nurturing terrorism through match betting", etc. Sahni said that any kind of relations with the enemies of "Sindoor" cannot be tolerated. After being humiliated and pleading during Operation Sindoor, Pakistan has once again started infiltrating the border and nurturing terrorists. 98 terrorist incidents took place in Jammu and Kashmir from January to July this year (2025) and 32 terrorists were killed, he said. After "Operation Sindoor", 13 terrorists were killed in 13 incidents in May, four terrorists were killed in 12 incidents in June and three terrorists were killed in eught incidents in July. On the very first day of August, a terrorist was killed in Kulgam, Kashmir, while the encounter is still going on, Sahni said adding that the tail named Pakistan will never straighten up. During the Indo-Pak cricket match, betting kingpin Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar and his henchmen hiding in Pakistan's lap become more active. Because the most betting is done when these two countries come face to face. A large part of this money is used to nurture terrorists, he added. Sahni has also accused BCCI of hurting national sentiments and filling its coffers. He has advised BCCI to learn from Indian players (who had clearly refused to play league and semi-finals with Pakistan) during the recently organized Championship of Legends. Sahni has demanded the Modi government to issue strict instructions to BCCI regarding not playing matches with Pakistan. Along with this, love for the country in case of a match with India, he has appealed to boycott the stadium and the TV channels broadcasting the match. Asia Cricket Cup 2025 is starting from 9 September. According to the released schedule, there will be two matches between India and Pakistan in the tournament. On the other hand, if both the teams reach the final, then there will be a match between India and Pakistan thrice. UNI VBH GNK
