NCW takes suo motu cognisance of sexual harassment of intern on IIT Madras campus
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report regarding the sexual harassment of a 20-year-old woman intern by a food court employee at IIT Madras.
NCW Chairperson Vijay Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu, seeking a fair and time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The NCW also directed the authorities concerned to ensure that the survivor receives immediate medical and psychological support, the commission said in a post on X.
On Wednesday (June 25, 2025), Kotturpuram police arrested a 22-year-old youth, a staffer at the food court on the campus, on charges of sexually harassing the student.
According to police sources, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. when the survivor was walking alone on campus. She managed to escape from the attacker's clutches and raised an alarm. The security personnel on duty responded quickly, came to her aid, and apprehended the suspect, who was later handed over to the police.
The police arrested the youth who has been identified as Roshan Kumar, 22, of Maharashtra, a contractual employee of a vendor operating on the varsity campus.

Jasbhir had reportedly issued threats following the fallout, accusing Shah of tarnishing his reputation. On the morning of the incident, Sunny attempted to contact Shah via WhatsApp and then had the hotel reception call Shah's room to say he was waiting at the lobby, the report further added. Shah, along with his friend Sameer, went downstairs where Sunny asked them to wait for Jasbhir, who never turned up. When Shah decided to leave after waiting for 15 minutes, Sunny and Billa allegedly became aggressive, threatening to kill him unless he stepped outside. Police said the two men forcibly led Shah to the parking area where Sunny hit him on the head and then stabbed him with a screwdriver, accusing him of ruining Jasbhir's career. As Shah cried for help, hotel staff and guests rushed to the scene. Sameer tried to intervene but was restrained by Billa during the attack. While the attackers fled, Shah was taken to a nearby hospital and later filed a police complaint. Acting swiftly, Bengaluru police arrested Jasbhir, Sunny, and Billa.
