SejaTi MADANI: One-foot papaya project boosts Kampung Kuak Hulu's economy

The Sun17-06-2025
IPOH: Kampung Kuak Hulu in Pengkalan Hulu, one of three villages under the supervision of Kolej Komuniti Gerik, has been selected to receive an allocation of RM100,000 under the Sejahtera Komuniti MADANI (SejaTi MADANI) initiative for its sustainable 'betik sekaki' (one-foot papaya) planting project.
Kampung Kuak Hulu SejaTi MADANI project chairman, Mohd Zaidi Bakri, said the initiative, undertaken by the Kampung Kuak Hulu Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK), aims to help local residents generate income through modern and sustainable agricultural practices.
'Since its implementation in early July last year, the programme has benefited 10 participants. Moreover, it has established an integrated development model that connects the local community with an educational institution,' he added.
'The project also supports the sustainability of the village economy by harnessing its true potential, while empowering the community through training, active participation, and shared responsibility,' he said in a statement issued by Kolej Komuniti Gerik today.
Mohd Zaidi added that each participant is expected to earn a net return of between RM2,000 and RM2,500 once the crops bear fruit, depending on market prices.
Meanwhile, Kampung Kuak Hulu JPKK chairman, Mohd Nazri Md Midah, in the same statement, said that, to prevent fruit oversupply, the JPKK, in collaboration with Kolej Komuniti Gerik, had organised a course on processing papaya into chilli sauce and fruit jam.
He noted that the SejaTi MADANI Project, an initiative inspired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is expected to be expanded to other areas, with a specific focus on local food production, thereby contributing to the national food security chain.
'The MADANI sustainability project involving one-foot papaya planting is one of JPKK's initiatives to encourage youth participation in the agricultural sector,' he added.
Meanwhile, the college said that the community fund is part of the government's effort to promote inclusive community development by harnessing local potential. The villages involved are positioned as key drivers of development through the implementation of high-impact projects aligned with the values of Malaysia MADANI.
SejaTi MADANI is a government initiative under the MADANI framework, aimed at stimulating economic activity at the community level and increasing household income by providing allocations of up to RM100,000 to eligible communities.
The initiative complements the broader MADANI Economy Framework, which prioritises the well-being of the people by raising the income floor and strengthening the community-based economy.

Corporate figure to be new Terengganu FC CEO this season

TERENGGANU FC (TFC) will be led by a corporate figure as chief executive officer (CEO) this season. Terengganu Football Association (PBSNT) chairman Hishamuddin Abdul Karim said the state FA has compiled a shortlist of several suitable candidates to lead the club, in line with the full privatisation plan for the club to move towards professional management. He said the final selection is underway and a closed interview would be conducted next week to select the most qualified and credible candidate to lead the club to greater heights. 'This time we will bring in a corporate figure to manage TFC. We need to fully embrace privatisation for the development of the club. 'We will announce the person as soon as possible, within this month after interviews and approval from the board of directors,' he said when met at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Terengganu Football Sdn Bhd (TFCSB) and the Terengganu Incorporated Group (Trg Inc) here today. At the ceremony, Trg Inc, represented by Chief Executive Officer Datuk Burhanuddin Hilmi Mohamed, handed over a sponsorship worth RM1.65 million to support TFC in the upcoming 2025/26 Malaysia League season. Burhanuddin said the sponsorship in the form of money and services represents a RM150,000 increase from the previous season. 'We believe that the strength of a football team does not solely depend on performance on the field, but also requires corporate backing, professional management and comprehensive community involvement. 'This collaboration is expected to increase brand engagement of government-related company Trg Inc across all TFC platforms,' he said.

Ipoh oil and gas consultant loses RM2.7mil in online investment scam

IPOH: An oil and gas consultant in Ipoh lost approximately RM2.7mil to a fraudulent online investment scheme, according to Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin. The Perak police chief reported that the 37-year-old victim realised he had been scammed on May 20 after continuously failing to withdraw the "profits" from the scheme. Comm Noor Hisam explained that the victim registered on a website called "Nova 88" in April 2023, after learning about it from an acquaintance. "Trusting the acquaintance, the victim initially invested about RM30,000 into a bank account provided to him to obtain a login name and password for the website to check his investment. "Between Jan 5, 2024, and May 20 this year, the victim made 136 transactions into seven different accounts, totalling around RM2.7mil," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 2). "The funds were from the victim's own savings and contributions from his family members. Whenever he tried to withdraw the earnings, he was required to make more payments, but was still unable to access the money," he said, adding that a police report was lodged on June 29. "The acquaintance provided excuses when questioned and has since become uncontactable," he added. Comm Noor Hisam advised the public against engaging in investments offered on unverified or unregistered websites, or those not regulated by recognised authorities. "High-risk investments like this can lead to significant losses," he said, noting that the case is being investigated under Section 402 of the Penal Code for cheating. "Always check the background of the investment company with relevant agencies like Bank Negara or the Securities Commission before making any decisions," he added.

Oil and gas consultant scammed of RM2.7 million in fake investment scheme

IPOH: An oil and gas consultant lost over RM2.7 million to a fraudulent online investment scheme through a website to which he was introduced. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 37-year-old victim lodged a report on June 29 after realising he had been deceived over a period spanning more than a year. He said that in April 2023, the victim was introduced to the investment platform via a contact he met on WhatsApp. "Trusting the individual, he registered an account on the website and began depositing funds with the expectation of high returns. "The victim initially deposited RM30,000 and was given login credentials to monitor his investments. "Between Jan 5, 2024, and May 20, 2025, he proceeded to make 136 transactions to seven different bank accounts, totalling RM2,701,687," he said in a statement. Noor Hisam added that the funds were sourced from both the victim's personal savings and family contributions. "However, red flags began to emerge when the victim was repeatedly asked to make additional payments each time he attempted to withdraw his so-called profits. "To date, he has been unable to retrieve any of the promised returns, and the suspect (who introduced the victim to the scheme) has become unreachable," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Noor Hisam warned the public to remain cautious of unregulated online investment platforms, especially those promoted through social media or messaging apps. "These schemes are often not regulated by recognised authorities and pose a high risk of financial loss," he said. He said potential investors should verify the legitimacy of any investment company with relevant bodies, such as Bank Negara Malaysia or the Securities Commission Malaysia, before parting with their money.
