Suryakumar Yadav shares photo from hospital as he undergoes surgery in Germany: 'Can't wait to be back'

Suryakumar Yadav surprised fans with a health update on Wednesday, June 25. From a Munich hospital bed, SYK shared an Instagram post revealing he had just successfully undergone surgery for a sports hernia in his lower right abdomen.
After the ankle surgery in December 2023 and a previous hernia repair in January 2024, this is the skipper's third operation in three years. Yet the 34-year-old remains upbeat. He has already begun eyeing rehab at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, as per The Indian Express.
And if all goes well, Suryakumar Yadav will be back in action for India's white-ball tour of Bangladesh this August.
First things first: What is a sports hernia?
A sports hernia is not like a typical hernia. There's no visible bulge. Instead, it is a tear or strain in the soft tissues of the lower abdomen or groin. Cricket's quick turns, sudden sprints, and dives can trigger it. Pain flares up with every push-off or twist.
Rest and therapy can help mild cases—sometimes. But when discomfort lingers, surgery becomes the only fix. Recovery can stretch from six weeks to three months. Timing matters, especially with international fixtures on the horizon.
From Munich to Bengaluru: SKY's road to comeback
On Instagram (@surya_14kumar), Suryakumar posted a photo of himself post-op, smiling weakly but determined. 'Life Update: Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I'm already on the road to recovery. Can't wait to be back,' he wrote, earning over a million likes within hours.
His next stop: Bengaluru. After a fortnight of rest in Germany, SKY will head to the BCCI's rehabilitation hub. There, tailored physio and conditioning will rebuild strength. Fans are still looking forward to him playing.
This is especially the case when they remember his explosive IPL season—717 runs at a 167.91 strike rate, five fifties and a Player of the Series award. Now, India's Bangladesh tour looms in August. His return could tip the scale in India's favour.
Hopefully, this is just a short break before his big comeback.

Jasprit Bumrah Debate: AB de Villiers Blasts Gautam Gambhir's '3 Test Declaration'

On the tour of England, one of the toughest places for the Indian team to win a Test series, the fact that the tourists would have Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the best pacer in the world, available for just three games out of five, is baffling for many. Bumrah, who featured in almost the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season for the Mumbai Indians, has been allotted just three games against England. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir already made the decision clear, making many wonder why lesser-important games couldn't be removed from Bumrah's schedule to manage his workload. Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers, who also had to manage the workload of Dale Steyn during their active days, isn't onboard with the Indian team management's decision over the call to give Bumrah just three matches on the 5-Test tour. "He is probably the top bowler in the world in all formats right now. So, it's very difficult to decide a way to rest him," De Villiers said on his YouTube channel. "But in my opinion, Test cricket is the ultimate form of the game. And this Test series probably would've been the one, in my opinion, to get him ready for all five Test matches." Citing Steyn's example, De Villiers said that Bumrah should've ideally been rested in lesser-important T20Is and ODIs. "That's what we used to do with Dale (Steyn). Rest him in lesser important T20 and ODI series and get him ready for the big Test series against Australia, England, and India away from home... New Zealand to a certain extent, depending on the rankings at that time," he explained. The former Proteas captain even threw the word 'mismanagement' by the Indian team as he questioned what led to the team taking such a call. "So, I don't know if it was mismanagement or perhaps because he recently got back from injury, sort of saw the IPL as the warmup phase," he said. "Maybe, went to the surgeon, who let him know, 'You can't play the five Test matches.' So, I mean you got to respect that, and at the end of the day, it's up to Team India to sort of manage him well," he added. "It doesn't get bigger than that, guys, except for maybe the WTC final."

Bumrah leads T20WC anniversary bash in Birmingham; Pant teases Jadeja on '1-year' milestone, gets knockout response

One year on from the famous victory at the T20 World Cup final in Barbados, India has been reliving that incredible night and celebrating all across the world after ending a long and painful drought of no trophies. When Suryakumar Yadav completed that iconic catch on the long-off boundary and ensured India were once again ICC trophy winners, a generation of cricketers breathed easy for finally having secured silverware — and they were together again one year later, on June 29 2025, as key members from that winning team cut a pair of cakes to commemorate the moment while in Birmingham. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj cut the two cakes while their teammates watch and celebrate the one-year anniversary of the triumph.(BCCI X) In a video shared by the BCCI on social media, select members of India's touring party in England can be seen gathered in a restaurant in Birmingham, where the team prepares for the second Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Edgbaston. Before the serious stuff starts on July 2, however, this was a nice moment for key players to look back at where they were a year ago while sharing a celebration of the moment with each other. The Indian team honoured the moment with two different cakes, one reading 'Team India', the other reading 'Champions T20 WC 2024'. No player looked ready to be the one to take the responsibility and cut the cake, with the likes of Rishabh Pant, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj urging each other to be the one. 'Paaji, kaato na…' Ultimately, it was Jasprit Bumrah who stood up and took the responsibility — just like he did a year ago, bowling two crucial overs that turned the tide of a game that was heavily in South Africa's favour with the Proteas needing run-a-ball from the last five overs to win. Bumrah stepped forward to cut one cake, while Siraj did his duties for the other, after their younger battery-mate Arshdeep urged them by saying "Paaji, kaato na (cut it no.)" Pant also teased Ravindra Jadeja by reminding him they were also celebrating the one-year anniversary of his retirement from the T20 format, with the all-rounder having joined Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in calling it a day in the shortest format after that finals victory. Jadeja was sharp to retort, however, reminding his younger teammates that he was still around in the other two formats. The players then went on to feed each other bites of the cake in a really nice moment which encapsulated why this was such an important period of time: after years of coming close but not quite getting over the finish line, this Indian team had managed to get the albatross off its back by lifting the trophy. Whether this heartfelt team moment can be the base for India to bounce back after an opening loss in the English series remains to be seen.
