Idaho murders suspect flashes wry smile as he appears in court to plead guilty

Metro4 days ago
The man accused of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death appeared to give a wry smile as he arrived in court to plead guilty and avoid the death penalty.
Bryan Kohberger wore a light gray colored dress shirt, a patterned tie and khaki pants and flashed the smile at his attorney, Anne Taylor, as his hearing began on Wednesday morning.
Kohberger started straight at the judge, who said that no demonstrations or outbursts would be allowed in court.
About an hour before Kohberger was due to arrive, family members of the victims began walking into the Ada County Courthouse. They sat together and appeared somber while waiting for the hearing to start. More Trending
Kohberger's plea deal sparing him of the death penalty has not only angered victims' families, but left them in fear of what he might do next.
Kohberger struck a plea deal on Tuesday for the murders of the four students in November 2022.
After finding out about the plea deal, the father of victim Kaylee Goncalves said he was afraid that Kohberger will spend the rest of his life behind bars writing a book or leaking his story to the world.
By agreeing to the deal, Kohberger avoids his trial that was set to begin in August – and may never have to answer to why he targeted and killed the students.

Man caught hurling his elderly dog over a fence and onto concrete path

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A man has been banned from keeping pets for five years after shocking footage showed him throw his elderly Staffordshire bull terrier over a gate. Kieran O'Connor, 35, hurled the dog onto a concrete path, before opening the gate and walking in himself. CCTV caught the self-employed gardener from Liverpool raising his hands and launching the animal into the air, leaving him 'exposed to acute pain'. The footage shows Prince falling on his side and stumbling, as O'Connor seems unbothered. A member of the public sent the clip to the RSPCA, who launched an investigation. O'Connor was taken to court, where he admitted failing to meet Prince's needs to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease by the 'infliction of physical abuse and emotional distress' in breach of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. At Liverpool & Knowsley Magistrates' Court on July 2, he was given a community order which involves 26 programme requirement days, and ordered to pay costs of £500 and a victim surcharge of £114. RSPCA Inspector Caren Goodman said in a statement that she went to the defendant's then address in Kirkby, Merseyside, in October last year. Accompanied by police, she got no answer by knocking the door, but could see Prince through a window, sitting on the front room sofa. The police officer who was with her called the defendant's number – which was advertised on his trailer parked outside – but he refused to attend the address. After waiting 25 minutes, the officer gained entry to the property using a search warrant, and Prince was taken into RSPCA care. She said Prince had 'ideal body condition', was 'bright, alert and active' and showed 'no obvious signs of distress'. When she spoke to the defendant the following day, he claimed he was 'putting his dog over the fence' because his neighbours had accused Prince of attacking their dogs. A vet at RSPCA Greater Manchester Animal Hospital who viewed the footage signed a Veterinary Certificate supporting Prince's removal from the house. Although a full examination revealed that he had not sustained any fractures, the vet said he had been put through unnecessary distress and suffering, and he was given pain relief. More Trending After the hearing, Inspector Goodman said: 'The most surprising thing about this case is that Kieran did not seem to understand that what he did was wrong. 'This attitude meant that he would not sign Prince over to us – even when the prosecution had run its course. 'We had to obtain an order from the court to make sure we could take him into our care and get him into a safe and secure environment. 'Nobody should be cruel or neglectful towards any animal and the kind of violence we saw here is absolutely unacceptable.' Dad urged twin son, 14, not to swim in river just one week before he drowned

Nischay Patel, 14, died after getting into difficulty while swimming with his twin Niyam near Beccles Quay in Suffolk, and now his heartbroken parents have told how they warned him about the river A dad says he told his 14-year-old son "one week before" not to go in the river where he tragically drowned. Nischay Patel, 14, died after getting into difficulty while swimming with his twin Niyam near Beccles Quay in Suffolk on July 2. Dad Ketan Patel said he frequently told Nischay not to swim in the water there, which is a popular spot for locals to cool down in the summer. ‌ He added that had spoken to him about the dangers of the water after seeing a post on Facebook highlighting the dangers of the site. "I told him one week before," said Mr Patel. ‌ Nischay's mother, Prapti, added: 'His dad explained that if anything happens, we can't do anything. If something happens somewhere else, we can help. But in water we can't do anything. 'I don't allow him to go to that river. He wants to jump in but I know it's really deep so I explained to him that if you're stuck somewhere and can't come out in a couple of minutes it's risky.' Nischay had been at a dentist appointment after school on Wednesday with Niyam, before the pair returned to their home above the Tabers Newsagents on Market Street. The boys - both Year 9 pupils at Sir John Leman school - then headed out to for a training session at Beccles Cricket Club, where they were junior members. After a short while it is understood Nischay suggested they go to the quay and both headed to the riverside area. A group of youths had been seen playing and jumping from the A146 road bridge before the incident. ‌ The alarm was raised by friends of the boys. Two girls, who they had been with, ran to the nearby Beccles Sailing Club to say their friend was drowning near the bridge. Club member Liam Gentry jumped in to search for him, but was unable to find him while Mr Patel was also alerted and went to the scene. Mr Gentry said: 'He asked me if I had found his son. I didn't know what to say to him. He then let out a yelp I'll never forget, and he fell to his knees.' ‌ Nischay's body was eventually recovered from the water following a major search operation by the emergency services. The family said the teenager had long had a love of water, and would often spend up to an hour in the bath after completing his paper round for the newsagents. His mother described him as "a really good boy", and his older sister, Ekta, said he was "very kind". His father added: 'He's helpful, he helps everyone - everyone.' Nischay and his brother both went to Beccles Primary Academy before going to Sir John Leman. His death has devastated the town, with dozens of flowers and cards left both at the quay and outside the family shop. Mr Patel - who moved from India to London in 2007 and then to Beccles in 2018 - said he had originally planned to hold his son's funeral in the capital. However, he said the family had been so touched by the community's response to his death that they were now considering holding it in Beccles. He said: 'Thank you to all the Beccles community, police and whoever was there, they helped a lot. All the people are very kind, nice and helpful." Richard Crozier, 80, a friend of the family who runs a neighbouring shop, said it had been a "terrible tragedy". 'Nischay was a special person. He had a capacity for friendship across generations," he said. 'He wasn't a boy of great numbers of words but he was a very tender-hearted lad.' Barry Darch, mayor of Beccles, said: 'Beccles is a tight knit community and I'm sure the whole town is in grief.'

Alongside the post he shared videos taken seconds after impact showing the extent of the blaze. Over 60 firefighters from Unified Fire, South Jordan, West Jordan, West Valley City, Sandy and Draper Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene, a spokesperson told The Salt Lake Tribune. They continued working through the night into Sunday morning to quash the blaze. Those who were injured in the incident were taken to nearby hospitals with their conditions currently unknown. But an official from Unified Fire shared on X how two heroic witnesses rushed to help those trapped in the burning SUV. "Two courageous bystanders risked their lives to rescue the driver and passenger from the burning vehicle just moments before it was engulfed in flames," the spokesperson wrote on X.
