Buy local, eat durian: RM25 Musang King sparks stampede at Johor fruit carnival
ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 28 — More than three tonnes of durian, equivalent to about 2,000 fruits were sold out in 12 hours on the first day of the Rahmah Madani Sale in conjunction with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) 2025 Southern Zone Carnival held at Puteri Harbour yesterday.
Durian trader Mohd Hairul Mohd Aziz, 43, from Batu Pahat, said the affordable promotional prices ranging from RM25 to RM35 per kilogramme for the premium Musang King variety, compared to the market price of RM40 to RM60 was the main reason for the overwhelming response from visitors.
'From 10 am to 10 pm yesterday alone, we managed to sell almost three tonnes of durian. Today, we're targeting to sell another four tonnes, insyaAllah,' he told Bernama when met at his sales tent at the carnival today.
Commenting on the Eat Local Fruits campaign launched yesterday by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, he described the initiative as a timely move to bring Malaysia's agricultural produce into the spotlight.
'Malaysian durians are among the best in the world. If events like this are organised more often, locals can enjoy premium durians that are usually exported,' he said.
Mohd Hairul also expressed his support for the expansion of the Rahmah Madani Sale and campaigns to promote local fruits, especially now that some imported fruits are subject to Sales and Services Tax (SST).
'This is the best time for us to aggressively promote local fruits. The quality is excellent and should be the rakyat's first choice,' he said.
Visitors also welcomed the campaign which offers affordable prices while boosting demand for local agricultural produce.
Siti Rubiah Manshor, 51, said local fruits should be the people's top pick, especially in the current economic climate.
'It's a shame if local fruits aren't our first choice, while foreigners are scrambling to buy them. This campaign to eat local fruits is great, but it needs to be implemented consistently,' she said.
Yesterday, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali launched the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM) 2025, themed 'Jom Beli Lokal' (Let's Buy Local), aimed at expanding the reach of local products and reducing dependence on imported goods. — Bernama

First RTS Link train set unveiled

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The first of eight train sets for the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link was unveiled today by transport minister Loke Siew Fook and his Singaporean counterpart, Jeffrey Siow. The transport ministries said the train sets will undergo off-site testing, which is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year, Bernama reported. The tests will be conducted by RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), a joint venture between Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd. RTSO will also operate the RTS Link service. RTSO, the ministers said, will check the integration between the train and other rail systems, including the signalling system, platform screen doors and onboard communications. 'Carrying out an initial round of off-site testing at Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) allows RTSO to identify and resolve potential integration issues early, before commencing testing of the trains on the RTS Link tracks,' Bernama quoted Loke and Siow as saying. Separately, RTSO chairman Khairil Anwar Ahmad said Train 01, which arrived in Singapore in April, will undergo offsite system integration testing at the SRTC in preparation for full integration and operation. Train sets 02 to 05 have been transported to China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation's manufacturing facility in Batu Gajah, Perak, where they are being assembled, he said. Train sets 06 to 08 will undergo the same process, Khairil added. 'Once the assembly process is completed, these train sets will be transferred to the Wadi Hana Depot in Johor Bahru for further testing and final preparations before being commissioned for passenger service,' Khairil said. The RTS Link, targeted to begin passenger service by December 2026, will connect Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru with Woodlands North in Singapore. Once launched, the RTS Link will operate with eight driverless train sets, each comprising four cars and capable of carrying over 600 passengers a trip. The RTS Link will have an overall peak capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction. Meanwhile, in a statement, MRT Corp said as of May 31, track installation and structural works for key components of the RTS Link project — namely the Marine Viaduct, Bukit Chagar Station and Wadi Hana Depot — have been completed. Interior works at the Wadi Hana Depot are now 80% complete and on track to achieve full completion by October this year, while installation of the Bukit Chagar Station's iconic roof facade is currently under way. It also said the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex is progressing well, with superstructure works now at 90% completion, while facade installation is slated to begin in September 2025. 'As per the terms of the bilateral agreement, the next key milestone will be the dynamic testing of the RTS train system, scheduled for May 2026. 'This critical phase will see the train operating along the full alignment from the Wadi Hana Depot through to the stations, paving the way for operational validation and readiness.'

RTS Link fares to be revealed closer to launch, says Loke as Malaysia, Singapore unveil first train set
SINGAPORE, June 30 — The operator of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is conducting a final market study to determine ticket fares, with the final pricing and fare mechanism to be announced closer to the service's launch, Malaysia's Transport Minister Anthony Loke said on Monday. 'We hope that the right price mechanism is in place to ensure that it can encourage more people to use the RTS service. 'The whole idea of this project is to make the modal shift, to ensure that more people use public transport to cross the Causeway,' he said at a joint press conference with Singapore acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow, after unveiling the first of the eight RTS Link train sets at the Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC) here. The event was also attended by Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), a joint venture between Prasarana RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd, is the operator of the RTS Link, a cross-border rail connecting Malaysia and Singapore. Loke said the Malaysian government was pushing for a more open payment system, in line with global public transport trends, which would allow commuters to use multiple modes of payment. Singapore's Siow said fares should be determined commercially by RTSO, taking into account demand and supply, as well as costs. Meanwhile, Loke said RTSO would also finalise the operating hours for the train service, which links Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru to Woodlands North in Singapore, by taking into account early commuters. 'One principle which is very important is that no urban rail will operate 24 hours. We need to have a few hours of engineering and normal (routine) maintenance,' he said. Loke said the project would not only help to improve the lives of cross-border commuters but also represent strengthened ties between Malaysia and Singapore amidst increasing global trade protectionism. 'In other parts of the world, people are busy setting up barriers. Micro And Small Traders In F&B Sector Can Continue Using Subsidised LPG Cylinders
KOTA KINABALU, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has assured that micro and small traders in the food and beverage sector can continue to utilise subsidized LPG cylinders as long as they offer "rakyat prices" (affordable prices) to consumers. Its Minister, Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, said that food and beverage vendors who offer services at reasonable prices need not worry, as they will continue to be guaranteed access to LPG subsidies. He stated that this is among the aspects considered in amending the Supply Control Regulations (Amendment) 2021 (PPKB (Amendment) 2021). Engagement sessions to gather feedback and views on the proposal will be held starting tomorrow until Op Gasak concludes on October 31. "Unlike the PPKB (Amendment) 2021, which only allowed the use of subsidised LPG cylinders not exceeding 42 kilograms at any given time, the implemented amendment will take into account the needs of micro and small traders in the food and beverage sector. "Besides recognising the needs of these traders, in this amendment, we will also look at control mechanisms in the context of ensuring that there are no leakages in this subsidy, especially related to smuggling and misappropriation," he said during a press conference here today. Earlier, Armizan attended the PPKB (Amendment) 2021 Engagement Session involving food and beverage traders' associations in Sabah to gather their views and feedback on the proposed amendment to the regulations. Armizan said feedback from micro and small traders in the food and beverage sector was crucial for establishing risk management to prevent leakages and, subsequently, ensure that no parties take advantage of public subsidies. He revealed cases of large-scale purchases of subsidised LPG gas, with some being used at business premises while the remainder was resold at certain prices to parties involved in misappropriation. "Therefore, we need to formulate control mechanisms related to the subsidised LPG cylinder issue," he said, urging traders' associations to hold engagement sessions with their respective members and submit memorandums of proposal directly to the ministry.
