Buy local, eat durian: RM25 Musang King sparks stampede at Johor fruit carnival

ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 28 — More than three tonnes of durian, equivalent to about 2,000 fruits were sold out in 12 hours on the first day of the Rahmah Madani Sale in conjunction with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) 2025 Southern Zone Carnival held at Puteri Harbour yesterday. Durian trader Mohd Hairul Mohd Aziz, 43, from Batu Pahat, said the affordable promotional prices ranging from RM25 to RM35 per kilogramme for the premium Musang King variety, compared to the market price of RM40 to RM60 was the main reason for the overwhelming response from visitors. 'From 10 am to 10 pm yesterday alone, we managed to sell almost three tonnes of durian. Today, we're targeting to sell another four tonnes, insyaAllah,' he told Bernama when met at his sales tent at the carnival today. Commenting on the Eat Local Fruits campaign launched yesterday by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, he described the initiative as a timely move to bring Malaysia's agricultural produce into the spotlight. 'Malaysian durians are among the best in the world. If events like this are organised more often, locals can enjoy premium durians that are usually exported,' he said. Mohd Hairul also expressed his support for the expansion of the Rahmah Madani Sale and campaigns to promote local fruits, especially now that some imported fruits are subject to Sales and Services Tax (SST). 'This is the best time for us to aggressively promote local fruits. The quality is excellent and should be the rakyat's first choice,' he said. Visitors also welcomed the campaign which offers affordable prices while boosting demand for local agricultural produce. Siti Rubiah Manshor, 51, said local fruits should be the people's top pick, especially in the current economic climate. 'It's a shame if local fruits aren't our first choice, while foreigners are scrambling to buy them. This campaign to eat local fruits is great, but it needs to be implemented consistently,' she said. Yesterday, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali launched the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM) 2025, themed 'Jom Beli Lokal' (Let's Buy Local), aimed at expanding the reach of local products and reducing dependence on imported goods. — Bernama

Cops rule out loan shark involvement in Johor teacher's death

Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said Lo Kwan Fong was an only child and both her parents were deceased. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have ruled out any criminal link to illegal moneylending syndicates in the death of a female teacher whose decomposed body was found in her home in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai, Iskandar Puteri, on June 13. According to Bernama, Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said although Lo Kwan Fong, 39, had previously borrowed RM20,000 from a loan shark, the debt had been fully settled. He said preliminary investigations also found no incidents of paint splashing or threats against the victim — tactics commonly used by loan sharks to pressure debtors into repaying their debts. 'The deceased had previously lodged a report, which was investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951. However, after clearing all her debts, there were no further police reports. 'Neighbours also confirmed that no loan sharks had come to throw paint at her house,' he was quoted as saying. Kumarasan said checks with the national registration department revealed that Lo was an only child and both her parents had died. To date, her remains have yet to be claimed by her next of kin. 'We will discuss this further with the hospital. 'After two weeks, the body will be released to Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) for them to appoint a private funeral service,' he said, adding that several parents of her students had expressed their willingness to assist in funeral arrangements. Kumarasan added police were informed that Lo has an aunt in Singapore, but they do not have further information about her. Lo was found dead in her home on June 13 after neighbours detected a foul smell and alerted the Nusa Bestari police station. Investigations indicated she had likely died about a month before her body was discovered. A post-mortem conducted by a forensic pathologist at HSA concluded that the cause of death was 'unascertained due to advanced decomposition'.

Iran-Israel conflict won't make govt raise RON95 price, says Anwar

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the price of RON95 petrol would not be raised even if there was a sharp increase in global crude oil prices. PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance that the government will not raise the price of RON95 petrol even if there is a sharp increase in global crude oil prices due to the geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel. He said although a price increase would benefit the national petroleum company, the government aimed to avoid burdening the people with higher fuel costs. Speaking after a meeting with the Johor PKR leadership in Iskandar Puteri today, the PKR president also said the expansion of the sales and service tax (SST) must be implemented carefully so as not to pressure the lower and middle income groups. 'Sometimes people get confused. For example, it was said that bananas are subject to SST. Actually, it's imported bananas. 'We will clarify the matter. The important thing is that we do not want to burden the lower-income groups,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Anwar also suggested that government departments and agencies serve local fruits during official functions to support domestic production. He said the government is open to reviewing the list of goods and services subject to tax if there is confusion or unfairness in its implementation. Commenting on the issue of SST on educational institutions, the prime minister explained the tax would only be imposed on international schools that charged fees above a certain threshold. 'Regular and private schools that charge RM10,000 or RM20,000 a year are not taxed. But if it's RM60,000 a year, then pay a little tax,' he said. Anwar emphasised that tax revenue would be used to fund public necessities, such as the construction of schools and the upgrading of public healthcare facilities. 'Wherever I go, hospitals are crowded. Many schools also need repairs. We need funds, and those come from taxes, but not from ordinary citizens. We will target the upper class and foreign sectors,' he said.
