What's my secret to surviving my weekly commute on the NYC Subway? Easy. My Kindle Paperwhite.
I have lived in New York City for nearly seven years and during that time have moved all across Brooklyn. The only thing that has never changed is my dreaded MTA commutes — and my love for reading.
I spend roughly seven hours a week minimum commuting on the MTA with no service, at times, body-to-body congestion, and near constant delays. It almost became unbearable, that is, until I bought my very first Kindle!
As an avid reader (who, like most, finds they NEVER have time to read!), my Kindle has quickly become not only my subway escape but my favorite daily accessory. It is rare to find me without it stashed in my purse from office days to late-night drinks with friends.
My 45-minute commute into Manhattan was once the bane of my existence, but thanks to my Kindle, I have been able to change my perspective. Now, my commute is one of the best parts of my day because it allows me uninterrupted time to really sit down and enjoy my books.
What makes the Kindle Paperwhite so convenient is its endless versatility. Although I am a hardcore hardcopy reader, my Kindle has opened up new ways to indulge in my stories that are more space savvy, affordable, and accessible!
I take my Kindle everywhere with me, even outside of the Big Apple. Given its compact, thin design, I have been able to travel with it seamlessly. It fits right in my carry-on, and the self-adjusting screen makes reading on planes hassle-free.
Other Kindle readers feel the same, with one saying: 'Whether I'm at the beach, in bed, or on a plane, it is the perfect reading companion. No distractions, just books!'
The newest model of the Kindle features unbeatable innovations such as faster performance, glare-free screen use, up to 12 weeks of reading per charge, and adjustable day-to-night lighting.
No matter where you are, from the MTA to the beach, your Kindle keeps up seamlessly, and there is no stress about getting the pages wet because this eReader is waterproof!
The Kindle Store has millions of books to choose from, from romance to mystery, and everything is at the tips of your fingers (literally). Since purchasing my Kindle, I have been able to read a full book a week, nearly every week, just from using it while on my daily commutes!
If you are someone who loves reading, hates the subway, or BOTH — having a Kindle at your side truly is life-changing. I got my Kindle Paperwhite in the adorable Raspberry color, but you can explore it in many others, including the classic black.
Make sure to check it out and snag one while it is 22 percent off during Amazon Prime Day.

Would you let the stars dictate where you live?

Despite living in an age in which GPS tracks our every move and most of us have a map available at the touch of a screen, a growing number of people are turning to a different guide for directions: the cosmos. Astrocartography, a practice combining geography and astrology, claims to map the world for a person based on the moment they were born, offering guidance on where to go on holiday and even where to live. Developed in its modern form by the American astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s, at the root of the concept, which is sometimes called locational astrology, is the theory that by relocating to or spending time in areas that match with favourable planetary lines, we could tap into positive energies. • The Indian mothers paying for C-sections under 'lucky' stars 'Essentially it's a map based on the moment you took your first breath, which shows you your most powerful locations in the world,' says Helena Woods, a former actress from New York who is now an astrology influencer living in Australia. She charges $550 for an initial one-hour astrocartography reading. The idea of celestial influence on Earthly locales isn't new. Ancient civilisations, including the Babylonians and Egyptians, relied on observing the stars to make decisions about agriculture, architecture and governance. In recent years astrocartography has experienced a resurgence, particularly on social media, carving out a niche for itself within the reportedly $2.2 billion global industry that is astrology. On platforms such as Instagram and TikTok, astrologers including Hagan Fox (280K followers on Instagram) and Chani Nicholas (630K followers on Instagram) share practical tips. The latter, who counts the singer Lizzo among her fans, also ties locational astrology to broader themes of identity and social justice. Meanwhile the podcast host and astrologist Chris Brennan invites specialists to unpack the practice in depth on The Astrology Podcast (240K subscribers on YouTube). • Read more luxury reviews, advice and insights from our experts The rise of remote work and digital nomadism has fuelled interest as people explore where in the world they may feel happiest. 'I've helped people completely uproot their lives and start over in far-off locations,' Woods says. 'We've all been to cities or towns that feel right [and] others that don't; Astrocartography helps explain these place-based attractions,' says Clarisse Monahan, a Goldman Sachs analyst turned professional astrologer based near Dublin, who charges €220 for an hour of astrocartography. 'It matches us to our hot spots on Earth. Deciding where to live for work or raising a family is probably one of the biggest decisions you make in life.' On a less life-changing note, some people turn to astrocartography to decide the best place and time to take a holiday. 'For example, they might want to go to Paris on their Venus line in order to find some romance,' Monahan, who is also Soho House's resident astrologer, says. • Tick, tick, hiss — watches for the year of the snake Woods and Monahan offer single or multiple astrocartography sessions for clients depending on the questions they have, and Woods offers masterclasses and workshops. Both have also written or are writing books on the subject. As for the next frontier in the astrology world? How about astroherbalism, which combines astrology and plant medicine to map planets and signs on to herbs for emotional healing? Back to the future indeed.

'I've read 35 books on my Kindle this year and you can get one for 25% off on Prime Day'

The Amazon Kindle has become my go-to device for hitting my reading goal this year. As someone who has always loved reading, I came up with the goal this year to see how many books I can read in 12 months. As we entered into July, I have managed to completely engross myself in 35 books, ranging from romance and fantasy to mystery novels. Now while this seems like a lot of books, the Amazon Kindle has been my go-to device throughout the year. Since receiving it as a Christmas gift back in 2021 - I think so I would stop filling my family home with an excessive amount of books - it has been within an arm's reach ever since. With a slimline design and access to thousands of books, the Amazon Kindle is a must-have device for anyone wanting to challenge themselves to read more and are looking for a compact way to do so. At the moment, shoppers can grab the cheapest edition for £71.24 in the Prime Day event, down from £94.99. Now don't get me wrong, I do love a paperback book, especially if it has sprayed edges. However, as I currently don't have the space for more physical books in my flat, reading books on my Kindle has become a handy alternative. The added bonus is that I only need to charge the device every couple of weeks, even when its being used continuously. For me at least, the Kindle has also become a cheaper alternative to traditional reading. With a variety of genres of books available on the Kindle store for readers to sink their teeth into, the vast majority of them retail at a cheaper price for a Kindle edition than they do for a paperback. While sometimes this can be a couple of pounds off - for example A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Mass is currently down from £9.99 to £2.99 for the Kindle Edition - other times Amazon hosts a sale on their top picks of the month which can let shoppers buy the book for only 99p. Some of the 99p July top picks include The Tenant by Frieda McFadden, Deep End by Ali Hazelwood, The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides and Mort by Terry Pratchett. Alternatively, for those who are frequent readers, Amazon also has a Kindle Unlimited feature that gives readers access to millions of books, thousands of audiobooks and some magazine subscriptions for free. Now it should be noted that this is through a subscription service, so shoppers will need to pay £9.49 per month. I personally have this feature as I can get through a few books a month that would end up costing upward of £25 if I bought them in store. However, for those who struggle to get through a book or two a month, this may not be the best option. For those who are wanting to try out Kindle Unlimited, Amazon is currently giving shoppers a 30-day free trial that can be cancelled at any time. However, readers need to be aware that once they cancel their subscription, all books they have read will disappear from their library. For those wanting to save money and space, a Kindle may be the perfect buy for you. And to make it a little bit easier, I have collated the top three Kindles on the market so you can find which one suits you best. Available in black and matcha green, shoppers can buy the lightest and most compact kindle for £71.24. Users will be able to read comfortably with a 6-inch glare-free screen, which also comes with an adjustable front light and a dark mode. This IS the device I currently own and I have spent many days sitting in the sun enjoying a new book without having to glare at the screen. I personally use the dark mode setting as this is more comfortable for my eyes, but shoppers can also choose to keep the device on light mode. With up to six weeks of battery life on a single charge, this device is the perfect companion to take with you on holiday and long haul flights. With a 4.5 star rating, one happy shopper said: "Got the green kindle and love it. It's so small which is handy as it's easily portable and fits in my handbag without talking up any extra space. It's really easy to set up with the mobile app, it took me like 5 minutes to connect it up. "The feel of the Kindle is really great, it's got a matte finish, which I absolutely love. Overall the Kindle is great as it's handy when trying to read on the go with the amount of books on it. I would highly recommend." However, another shopper said: "I find it difficult to find items in library. I very much prefer the way that my Kindle Paperwhite operates and shows the list of books I have as a list and not showing the cover." To buy the Amazon Kindle (16 GB), click HERE. In comparison to the cheaper model, this Paperwhite Kindle boasts a 7-inch display and can turn pages 25 per cent faster. With an ultra-thin design, shoppers can easily slip this device into their bag without taking up too much space. What's even better is that this device is said to boast a battery life of up to 12 weeks on a single charge. Users can also read their Kindle anywhere as it is both waterproof and worry-free. Whether you are sitting in a warm bath or by the pool on holiday, you won't need to worry about the device being damaged. Available in black, jade or raspberry, one delighted shopper said: "I'm absolutely in love with the All-new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16 GB! This e-reader has exceeded my expectations in every way. "The 6.8-inch display is bright and crisp, and the e-ink technology makes reading for hours feel just like reading a physical book. The adjustable warm light is a game-changer for late-night reading—it's so much easier on the eyes." However, one shopper grumbled: "This kindle paperwhite has a larger screen size than my series 7, but the surround is much narrower. Sadly, this means there's not much to hold on to & I move my fingers to ease cramp & oops the screen has changed or oops the font size has changed or oops my book has disappeared...... very irritating." Click HERE to buy the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (16 GB). Amazon Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition (32 GB) For those who don't enjoy the black and white design of the other devices, this Colorsoft Kindle features covers and content in paper-like colour. If you enjoy highlighting your favourite parts of a novel, shoppers can now highlight in yellow, orange, blue and pink for added variety instead of it all looking the same. With a battery life of up to eight weeks, this Kindle can also get a power boost through a wireless charging dock. With an auto-adjusting light to suit your surroundings, Kindles also have the added bonus of not receiving constant notifications - fully allowing you to slip into a new world for an hour or two. One five-star reviewer said: "This is a beautiful Kindle. If you read on your Kindle a lot it is so worth it. The colours are very pretty, it's perfect hand size and easy to navigate. I absolutely love it and feel it's worth every considerable penny! The screen is brilliant in sunlight and the light quality is great for darker moments." While another shopper grumbled about the power button: "I just found a design flaw in the product, because the power button is on the bottom edge of the device, if you rest the device on a table while you read, you will end up setting a popup asking if you want to restart or turn off the device." The Bachelor alum Bekah Martinez defends going SEVEN years without shaving body hair

The Bachelor #22 alum Bekah Martinez clapped back at a troll who said her fiancé of three years, Grayston Leonard, 'must be grossed out' by her hairy legs and arm pits. 'I stopped shaving seven years ago and I still get messages like this all the time,' the 30-year-old reality star - who boasts 1M social media followers - wrote on Tuesday. 'And for the record, Gray went to a liberal arts college in Oregon, so he's had his fair share of gross razor-less women.' Bekah (born Rebekah) went on to explain in her body-positivity Instagram slideshow that 'teachers and coaches would gently tease [me] when any of my jet black leg stubble was growing out' which 'reinforce that my [body] hair was wrong.' Martinez made the decision to go all-natural in 2018 while she was pregnant with her first child. 'I wanted my daughter (and my future sons) to see that hair on a woman's body is normal. Not shameful. Not gross,' the Bekah & Friends podcaster explained. 'I wanted to demonstrate that body hair is not "masculine," because I am a woman. And so, my body hair is feminine.' And it wasn't just for her children as Bekah 'wanted to consciously work through the disgust I had in my natural body.' 'I still don't love my body hair,' Martinez confessed. 'In certain settings, I feel people's stares and feel embarrassed. But the feeling has so much less power over me than it used to. And when [my daughter] Ruth points and says, "Mom, my legs look like yours" without any ounce of shame, it is all worth it.' The Bravo-lebrity shares three children - daughter Ruth, 6; son Franklin, 5; and son Ernest, 21 months - with the 35-year-old Long Beach Rising Climbing Gym founder, whom she originally began dating in January 2018. Bekah and Grayston raise rabbits for meat and chickens for eggs in their LA backyard. Martinez last made headlines in 2023 for revealing she was putting her little Ernest 'on the potty' at nine weeks old. Career-wise, the former nanny is every bit the influencer with paid partnerships for brands like Araza Beauty, Brook Linen, Club Med Cancun, Osea Malibu, My Favorite Genes, and Natural Cycles. Bekah made history in 2018 as the first pixie-haired woman to compete on The Bachelor, and she was the seventh contestant eliminated by Arie Luyendyk Jr. in season 22 of the ABC dating competition. The 43-year-old real estate broker went on to marry his runner-up Lauren Burnham in 2019 and they're now proud parents of six-year-old daughter Alessi as well as four-year-old twin sons Senna and Lux. The Bachelor franchise doesn't exactly have the best track record for lasting marriages as only three couples have remained together after 29 seasons. Only four couples remain married from The Bachelorette after 21 seasons while the odds are far better on Bachelor in Paradise where 10 couples remain married after 10 seasons.
