Yellow Sam has earned a shot at the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) next month at Caulfield with a strong win on Saturday.
The Lindsey Smith-trained mare finished powerfully under jockey Fred Kersley to overhaul Lim's Saltoro, well-backed favourite The Open and Rheinberg.

'We thought this craziness she'd go to the Bletchingly with no weight,' Smith said.
'We'll throw a few darts and then if she competed well she'd go to the (PB Lawrence).'
Yellow Sam rounded the bend with work to do and duly saluted second-up.
Yellow Sam won the Golden Topaz at Swan Hill the start prior, first-up from a long break after a health setback last year – a benign tumour in her hind gut.
'It's easier to train fast horses, I've got a few slower ones,' Smith said.
'Courageous horse, has been from the day dot … great will to win, as I've said many times, will maybe outdoes ability sometimes.'
Kersley praised Yellow Sam.
'She has got better, she's probably the ultimate racehorse,' Kersley said.
'She's a professional, probably one of the gutsiest horses I've had the pleasure to do anything with.
'Time and time again she's come back, a filly, a mare, and she's held the form.'
Earlier on the card, former international Sayedaty Sadaty, trained by Ciaron Maher, opened his Australian account with victory in the 2000m Quality Handicap at Caulfield on Saturday.
Sayedaty Sadaty travelled outside leader Amberite and kicked clear in the straight to win third-up after consecutive 1800m placings at Sandown.
Unfortunately, the race was marred by separate incidents in the straight.
Rolls, trained by Maddie Raymond and Patrick Bell, failed to finish due to a severe leg fracture.
Racing Victoria confirmed the gelding was humanely euthanized by on-course veterinarians.
Jockey Harry Grace was taken to hospital with a sore hand and some general pain.
Dakotah Keane was also dislodged from her mount, King Frankel, in the straight.
Thankfully, Keane and King Frankel avoided injury.

Zahra sets sail for big spring
Flemington trainer Simon Zahra has spring ambitions exciting Xarpo after the 'beast' responded to challengers at Caulfield on Saturday.
Xarpo, expertly handled by apprentice jockey Ryan Houston, found the front early in the straight as favourite Mercurial Lady mounted a case.
Xarpo lifted again to hold a margin, while Illyivy bloused Mercurial Lady for second and third.
'They were entitled to beat her,' Zahra said.
'She was a bit underdone, first-up 1200m, most of them had a run under their belt, so it's exciting.'
Zahra said Xarpo would get to a mile in the spring.
'She's won over 1400m but I reckon she's a miler, last preparation she just missed the starts, did everything wrong, we got away with that win at Flemington,' Zahra said.
'To see her now compared to what she was six months ago just a different horse.'
Xarpo, a rising four-year-old daughter of The Autumn Sun, has won three of six starts to date.
'We gave her a nice prep last time, she wasn't quite furnished and by the end she was starting to switch on,' Zahra said.
'She returned to the stable an absolute beast (after her spell) … we were pretty confident she would come here today and run pretty well.
'There's a bit of spring fortune we want to target … a complete different horse (now), like a big strong mare and she's starting to do everything right.'
Zahra deferred spring plans until after Xarpo's next run, potentially at Caulfield in a fortnight or Flemington in three weeks.
'If she can perform well there we'll freshen her up,' Zahra said.

Oscar Piastri slams Alpine, comes second at F1 2025 Austrian GP

Don't miss out on the headlines from F1. Followed categories will be added to My News. Australia's Oscar Piastri survived a frightening brush with disaster to retain his lead in the Formula One world championship after finishing runner-up behind his McLaren teammate Lando Norris at the Austrian Grand Prix. Piastri showed amazing control to avoid crashing his car at full speed on lap 55 when he was run off the Red Bull Ring circuit in Spielberg while lapping Alpine's Franco Colapinto, who was later penalised by the race stewards for his erratic driving. He was later blocked by Alpine's Pierre Gasly at turn one of lap 57. 'Alpine still manages to find a way to f*** me over all these years later,' Piastri quipped on the team radio. Piastri famously left Alpine for McLaren in 2022. Starting from third on the grid, Piastri improved one place after sweeping past the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc at the first corner but he was unable to get ahead of Norris and eventually had to settle for second place after having no luck with either pit stops or lapping the slower backmarkers. 'Intense, I hope it was good watching because it was pretty hard work from the car,' Piastri said. 'I tried my absolute best but could have done a better job when I just got ahead momentarily but it was a good battle, bit on the edge at times. 'Probably pushed the limit a bit far but it was a good race and that's what we were here to do, race each other and try and fight for wins. That's what we did. It was close for me but not quite enough.' Oscar Piastri finished second in Austria. Norris, who started from pole, defended his track position perfectly throughout the 70-lap race, making no repeat of his mistake from the last round in Canada, where he collided with his teammate, as he held on to register his third win in 11 rounds this season. In taking the chequered flag, the Englishman narrowed the gap to Piastri in the drivers' championship from 22 to 15 points heading into next weekend's British Grand Prix, the halfway point of the 24-race season. Barring a dramatic turnaround, the drivers' title is now looking like a straight battle between the two McLarens after Red Bull's Max Verstappen, currently third in the standings, was knocked out on the first lap in Austria when he was hit from behind by Mercedes teenager Kimi Antonelli, who incurred a three-grid penalty for his error. Verstappen has now fallen 61 points behind Piastri, while McLaren's lead in the constructors' championship has blown out to 207 points from Ferrari, which finished third and fourth with Leclerc holding off Lewis Hamilton to reach the podium for the fourth time this year. 'It's unlucky,' Verstappen said. 'It was not an ideal result. 'We try to do our best always, my mentality doesn't change, we've won a lot in the past and sometimes you have to accept that you're not winning and we just try and do the best we can.' Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli collided on the first lap With nine podiums from 11 races this season, Piastri has already demonstrated he has the speed, skill and consistency to contend for the greatest prize in motorsport but he can also consider himself unfortunate not to have added to his five wins this season. His hopes of claiming pole position were ruined when Colapinto's Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly spun during qualifying, forcing Piastri to abort his final flying lap on a fresh set of soft tyres and start from third. After making a clean getaway and overtaking Leclerc, Piastri had Norris under enormous pressure, and briefly got his nose in front, but dropped six seconds behind when he stayed out for an extra four laps during the first round of pit stops when McLaren switched from medium to harder compound tyres. 'Probably pushed the limit a bit far but it was a good race and that's what we were here to do, race each other and try and fight for wins. That's what we did today, it was close for me but not quite enough,' Piastri said. 'I felt like the pace this weekend has been good. Once I could stay in the DRS, it felt pretty good. Once I dropped out after the first stop, it was tough to make the progress to get back. Some things to go over to see if we could have done anything better.' McLaren finished first and second at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg. Norris eventually crossed the finish line just 2.6 seconds ahead of Piastri and was relieved to get the job done after McLaren told both drivers they were free to race each other as long as they did not make contact. 'We had a great battle, that's for sure, it was a lot of fun and stress,' Norris said. 'A nice battle so well done to Oscar, hopefully it was a nice one for everyone to watch. 'Inside the car it was obviously tough especially in the DRS, it's so tough round here and it's hard to get him out of the gap but once I did I could manage things pretty well, but it was still quick so it was good fun.' Mitch Cohen's Blackbook: Five to follow from McKell Cup day

Racing expert Mitch Cohen has analysed all the chances from Listed W J McKell Cup (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens and has found a few worth following. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. There is another Midway race over a mile in a fortnight that has her name on it. SPYWIRE (2nd, Race 5) Early signs indicate the gelding operation has done the trick with this gelding, which would have gone even closer had he got out earlier. Take nothing away from King's Secret, he was excellent too. BEREZKA (4th, Race 5) Just ended up too far back on the inside but made up good ground in the straight behind King's Secret. She is building towards a win for sure. PIGGYBACK (3rd, Race 8) The Ciaron Maher-trained mare got caught in traffic in the home straight and was only able to build momentum late to finish third behind Misterkipchoge. She's racing well and another win isn't far away. BELVEDERE BOYS (2nd, Race 9) New import Elamaz's win in the McKell Cup had plenty of merit first-up in Australia while this Matt Dunn-trained stayer surged home to just miss. He will be ready to win third-up. ■■■■■STEWARDS SAY New Pharoah (Race 1): Reared when the gates opened and lost seven lengths at the start. He will be forced to trial to the satisfaction of stewards before racing again. How Much Better (Race 1): Apprentice Anna Roper was suspended for careless riding after her mount caused Pretty Tavi to lose its rightful running after shifting in at the 1000m. Vella's Best (Race 5): Winona Costin was suspended for careless riding after shifting in on this galloper when insufficiently clear of Loafer, resulted in it being carried in onto Sovereign Hill. Sir Artie (Race 6): Gave ground over the final 100m. He was found to be 1/5 lame in the near-foreleg post-race. Step Aside (Race 6): Came under pressure at the 600m with jockey Ash Morgan indicating he laid out rounding the home turn and did not respond to riding. No abnormalities were found other than a superficial abrasion to the near-fore bumper. Townsend (Race 9): Was found to be 1/5 lame in the off-foreleg. Deprivation (Race 10): The gelding was a late scratching at 1.46pm after being fractious en route to the course and sustaining a haematoma to its hip. ■■■■■CRUNCH TIME Red Rags To Bulls (Race 2): Near last on the turn, she rattled off a slick 33.70 seconds last 600m to win. All three of her closing splits of 11.61, 10.96 and 11.73 were the best of the race. Changing Colours (Race 4): Only had one runner behind turning for home before finishing off with a race-best last 600m of 34 seconds. Her final furlong of 11.44 was the difference. Elamaz (Race 9): Ran the best first three splits of the race to control the McKell Cup before running his last 600m in 34.76 seconds. Runner-up Belvedere Boys run home of 34.18 saw him just come up short. Slinky (Race 10): The fastest last 600m of the meeting went to this Bjorn Baker-trained mare, which settled a clear last in the final event before rocketing home in 32.88 seconds. ■■■■■TRACK TALK 'I am quite taken by him. His demeanour was good, his action remarkable.' Jockey Josh Parr on McKell Cup winner Elamaz. 'I have been going to Brisbane and it has been a whitewash to be honest.' Parr after returning to form with a winning treble. 'I still think the best is yet to come, once we get him up over a bit further.' Bjorn Baker on Rosehill winner Puntin. 'We are just hanging in there…I'm hoping we can get to 100 but are going to struggle.' Baker again on his season pursuit of 100 metro winners. 'Autumn Glow, Lady Shenandoah and Aeliana have had good spells, and we will see how they come up before deciding on their spring programs.' Brad Waters' horses to follow and forgive from Caulfield on Saturday

Form expert Brad Waters runs his eye over Saturday's meeting at Caulfield, finding five horses to follow and some to forgive from the card. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! â– â– â– â– â– FIVE TO FOLLOW SHAHAR (6th of 12, Race 1): The Amy and Ash Yargi-trained youngster trialled well leading up to her debut in which he drew the outside barrier. The draw forced jockey Daniel Moor to take Shahar to the back of the field where she raced wide. Shahar lost her way on the home turn and did plenty wrong in the straight before getting her act together and making late ground. She can improve significantly with race experience. Sonofkirk came from nowhere to win the opener at Caulfield! He is one to follow ðŸ'° @JyeMcNeil @FreedmanRacing — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 XARPO (1st of 10, Race 2): Horses that race near the speed and show plenty of fight are always worth following and Xarpo is one of those horses. The Simon Zahra-trained filly won a couple over the summer, including a race at Flemington, and returned with a game win in soft ground. Her racing style means she can win another race or two in the coming weeks. It was all happening there 🫣 Always Enuff wins it in a blanket finish as the two favourites finish at the tail end! @lil_spaino96 @shanenicholsrac — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 HERBERT PARK (3rd of 12, Race 6): The Tony Noonan-trained mare stepped up in class at Caulfield on Saturday and didn't have a lot of luck in the straight when beaten less than a length. She raced midfield to the home turn but raced tight for most of the straight before being crowded on the line. That was her second run this time in and looks ready to win on soft or heavy ground. The Matt Laurie-trained five-year-old rolled to the lead but was no match for more talented rivals in the last 200m, fading to finish fourth. Saturday's race was his third run in and he looks ready to win something a shade easier on rain-affected ground. RHEINBERG (4th of 10, Race 9): The Lindsay Park-trained Rheinberg had every chance to win at Caulfield but finished fourth, a half length from the winner. However, he showed he was ready to break through again with his effort. He challenged the leaders early in the straight and looked set to draw clear but he peaked on his run in the last 100m second-up. He'll be much fitter for that outing and can finish the job in the coming weeks. YELLOW SAM ON THE LINE 😲 It took every inch of the straight but Yellow Sam got there! What a way to finish the day at Caulfield! @FKersley — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 â– â– â– â– â– PLEASE FORGIVE: BETWITCHERY (6th of 10, Race 3): Betwitchery went down narrowly after leading at Sandown but was never a chance at Caulfield after racing at the back of the field. Betwitchery lost concentration in the gates and was slowly away, losing all winning chance. She's worth another chance when she next appears. Xarpo sticks the neck out and wins! Ryan Houston on the board for Simon Zahra ðŸ'°ðŸ'° @szahraracing — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 JUST FOR SHOW (5th of 11, Race 4): Started as the $3.30 favourite but his backers were out of business soon after the start when Just For Show was slow to begin from a tricky draw. He was never going to win the race but might have finished a bit closer had apprentice Luke Cartwright decided to track through on the inside on the home turn. Harry's Yacht sails away ⛵⛵ Jye McNeil has an early double! @JyeMcNeil — 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 28, 2025 THE BLACK CLOUD (2nd of 12, Race 6): The Black Cloud was a beaten $2.80 favourite but was far from disgraced. She pushed forward and worked to share the lead to the home turn before boxing on gamely in the straight until claimed by the winner Sixteen Reasons, who had a 3.5kg weight advantage.
