New Delhi: Israel has carried out strikes across Iran while Tehran has returned fire as the foes trade attacks for a sixth straight day. The entire Middle East, on the other hand, is holding its breath, watching what happens next. Early on Wednesday, the Israeli military said new waves of missiles had been launched from Iran. Israeli media outlets reported that the latest salvos triggered sirens across the entire country, including the Tel Aviv area where explosions and fires were reported. Amid the escalating tensions in the middle east, Egypt has taken a significant step by bringing together 21 Muslim countries. This move is seen as a step that could place it at the center stage of regional diplomacy.
Egypt has issued a joint statement on behalf of 21 Muslim countries condemning the Israeli attacks on Iran that began on June 13. Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, prepared this statement after holding discussions with the foreign ministers of these countries. The list includes Algeria, Bahrain, Brunei, Chad, Comoros, Djibouti, The Gambia, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Mauritania, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Türkiye, Oman, and the UAE.
Respect for sovereignty and adherence to the law is essential
In the statement issued by Egypt, the countries emphasized that international law and the United Nations Charter must be followed. The statement further added that it is important to respect the sovereignty of all countries and maintain good relations with neighboring nations. In this context, the attacks on Iran have been seen as a dangerous provocation, increasing the risk of instability across the entire West Asia region.
Make the Middle East a Nuclear Weapons-Free Zone
All countries raised an important demand that the Middle East should be declared a zone free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. During the joint statement, the countries stated that all countries in the region should join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to curb the nuclear arms race. The countries also condemned all attacks targeting nuclear facilities under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stating that such actions violate international law and the Geneva Convention of 1949.
All the Muslim countries are of the opinion that only dialogue and diplomacy can help to end this crisis. In addition, an appeal has been made to ensure the security of sea routes and the freedom of navigation. This unity of 21 countries indicates that the Israel-Iran conflict is no longer limited to just two nations.

Chief Minister Stalin wanted to challenge the Waqf (Amendments) Act in SC: MP Wilson

DMK Rajya Sabha Member P. Wilson on Saturday said amendments to the Waqf Act brought about in 1995 were sufficient, and the BJP's decision to form a committee and its actions were 'oppressive'. Speaking at the 'Save Waqf, Save Constitution' panel discussion organised by the All India Muslims Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), he said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin passed a resolution in the Assembly when the Waqf (Amendments) Act, 2025, was introduced in Parliament. 'Only the BJP opposed the resolution and staged a walkout from the Assembly. The BJP has betrayed the Muslim community and the AIADMK has formed an alliance with them. When the Bill was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee, the DMK appointed two of its MPs, A. Raja and M.M. Abdullah, who travelled across India for over nine months and participated in consultative meetings and opposed the amendments. The committee's objections were given in writing, and we caused a ruckus in Parliament. We debated it for 15 hours, and it was passed early in the morning. We voted against it,' he said. He added that the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had said that the Waqf Act should be challenged in Supreme Court. 'After it was passed in the Rajya Sabha on April 4 and became an Act on April 5, we filed a case against it on April 7.' Former Madras High Court judge Justice D. Hariparanthaman said the latest Waqf Act amendments should be compared to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act and compared to the rights available to the majority community. 'Section 104 of the Waqf Act which says that anyone can donate to Waqf... has been removed. Now, not even a Muslim can donate but he/she should have been a Muslim for five years. Does HR and CE Act have such a section? A Muslim, Christian, Jain is not prevented from donating to the Mylapore temple. This is the first act that prevents donation. All powers of the Waqf Act are being taken over by the Central government,' he said. R. Vijayasankar, former Editor, Frontline, highlighted the role of the media in spreading hate against Muslims and underlined the lack of representation of Muslims, Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Communities within mainstream media. Advocate A. Arulmozhi, retired IAS officer G. Balachandran, and Rahmathunissa, member, AIMPLB, also participated.

US-Israel strategy aims to end Gaza war, disarm Hamas: Witkoff

President Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, has assured families of Israeli hostages that the US is working closely with Prime Minister Netanyahu on a strategy to end the Gaza war. read more Palestinians climb onto trucks as they seek for aid supplies that entered Gaza through Israel in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza Strip. Reuters On Saturday, President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy assured the relatives of hostages held by the Palestinian terrorist organisation Hamas that he was working with the Israeli government on a strategy that would successfully end the Gaza war. Trump has made ending the Gaza war a top priority for his administration, although discussions have been stalled. Steve Witkoff is visiting Israel as the government faces growing pressure over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the region. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In a recording of the meeting, reviewed by Reuters, Witkoff is heard saying: 'We have a very, very good plan that we're working on collectively with the Israeli government, with Prime Minister Netanyahu … for the reconstruction of Gaza. That effectively means the end of the war.' The White House did not immediately reply to a request for comment on his statements. Witkoff also stated that Hamas was willing to disarm in order to end the conflict, despite the group's continuous refusal to lay down its weapons. In reaction to the reported words, Hamas, which has controlled Gaza since 2007 but has been brutally battered by Israel during the conflict, stated that it will not give up 'armed resistance' until a 'independent, fully sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital' is formed. Indirect talks between Hamas and Israel aimed at negotiating a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza conflict and an agreement for the release of half the captives ended last week in impasse. On Saturday, Hamas released its second video in two days of Israeli hostage Evyatar David. In it, David, skeletally thin, is shown digging a hole, which, he says in the video, is for his own grave. Witkoff met with Netanyahu on Thursday. Afterward, a senior Israeli official said an understanding between Israel and Washington was emerging that there was a need to move from a plan to release some of the hostages to a plan to release all the hostages, disarm Hamas and demilitarize the Gaza Strip, echoing Israel's key demands for ending the war. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Gaza starvation On Tuesday, Qatar and Egypt, who are mediating ceasefire efforts, endorsed a declaration by France and Saudi Arabia outlining steps toward a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As part of it, they said Hamas must hand over its arms to the Western-backed Palestinian Authority. Witkoff arrived in Israel with Netanyahu's government facing a global outcry over devastation in Gaza and the starvation growing among its 2.2 million people. The crisis has also prompted a string of Western powers to announce they may recognize a Palestinian state. On Friday, Witkoff visited a U.S.-backed aid operation in southern Gaza, which the United Nations has partly blamed for deadly conditions in the enclave, saying he sought to get food and other aid to people there. Dozens have died of malnutrition in recent weeks after Israel cut off all supplies to the enclave for nearly three months from March to May, according to Gaza's health ministry. It said on Saturday that it had recorded seven more fatalities, including a child, since Friday. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Israel blames Hamas for the suffering in Gaza and says it is taking steps for more aid to reach its population, including pausing fighting for part of the day in some areas, air drops and announcing protected routes for aid convoys. U.N. agencies have said that airdrops of food are insufficient and that Israel must let in far more aid by land and quickly ease the access to it. The Gaza war began when Hamas killed more than 1,200 people and took 251 hostage in an attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, according to Israeli figures. Israel's offensive has since killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials. According to Israeli officials, 50 hostages now remain in Gaza, only 20 of whom are believed to be alive.

US steps in! Envoy Witkoff meets hostage families in Tel Aviv amid growing pressure on Hamas

U.S. envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff met the families of Israeli hostages in Tel Aviv on Saturday (August 2). During the meeting which lasted over two hours Witkoff listened "to every personal story and heard each individual request, and he answered the last question and didn't go until then", Ruby Cohen, father of hostage Itay Cohen, said. Earlier Israelis gathered at Hostages Square chant slogans calling for the release of hostages and end of the war. On Thursday, Wikoff met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a bid to salvage Gaza truce talks and tackle a humanitarian crisis in the enclave, where a global hunger monitor has warned that famine is unfolding.
