Malaysia lays groundwork through strategic bilateral meetings ahead of 58th AMM
The discussions centred on aligning agendas, finalising joint outcome documents and addressing logistical and protocol arrangements to ensure smooth proceedings. They also served to strengthen coordination among Asean member states on key regional issues ahead of ministerial-level deliberations.
Amran began his engagements with Cambodian Secretary of State, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Kung Phoak, followed by Director General for Asean Cooperation at Indonesia's Foreign Ministry, Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro.
He later met with the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Eksiri Pintaruchi and Permanent Secretary (Asean), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brunei, Johariah Abdul Wahab.
Each meeting lasted more than 30 minutes.
The 58th AMM and related meetings, to be held under Malaysia's 2025 Asean Chairmanship themed 'Inclusivity and Sustainability,' will feature 24 ministerial-level meetings, including engagements with Asean Dialogue Partners and Sectoral Dialogue Partners.
The event, from July 8 to 11, is expected to gather about 1,500 delegates, including foreign ministers from Asean member states, Timor-Leste, Asean Dialogue Partners, Asean Regional Forum (ARF) participating countries, Sectoral Dialogue Partners and senior officials from the Asean Secretariat.
Malaysia is hosting the AMM as part of its fifth Asean Chairmanship, having previously held the role in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. - Bernama

Anwar meets Brazil's Embraer, pledges support for investments to boost Malaysia's aviation sector
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 — The government is committed to strengthening Malaysia's aviation industry ecosystem and is ready to assist investors towards that. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this will be achieved through investor-friendly policies, the development of local talent, and high-impact technology collaboration. He stated that this aligns with the aspiration of making Malaysia a leading aerospace hub in the Asean region, with a highly skilled workforce and a strong, competitive industrial ecosystem. He said this in a statement after holding a meeting with the president and CEO of Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, Francisco Gomes Neto, here today. The meeting was held to discuss strategic investment opportunities in Malaysia, said Anwar, who is in town for the Brics Leaders' Summit. Regarding the meeting, Anwar, who is also finance minister, said discussions touched on Embraer's potential investment in Malaysia, including collaborations with Malaysian airlines. 'I emphasised the Madani Government's commitment to strengthening the aviation industry ecosystem,' he added. Malaysia also welcomes Embraer's involvement in the development of maintenance centres, pilot training, supply chains, and low-carbon aircraft innovation, in line with the Madani Economy framework and the National Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030. Anwar said he also appreciated Embraer's interest in enhancing cooperation in the defence sector, which could improve the air mobility capabilities of the Malaysian Armed Forces. 'The government is committed to ensuring that all forms of cooperation are translated into high-value job opportunities, technology transfer, and inclusive economic growth for the people of Malaysia,' he added. A global aerospace company headquartered in Brazil, Embraer has businesses in commercial and executive aviation, defence and security, and agricultural aviation. The company designs, develops, manufactures, and markets aircraft and systems, providing services and after-sales support to customers. Since it was founded in 1969, Embraer has delivered more than 9,000 aircraft. Also present at the meeting were Embraer global vice president of institutional relations, Jose Serrador Neto, and senior vice president and head of region for Asia Pacific, Raul Villaron. PM Anwar backs Brics call for ethical AI, eyes Asean-wide safety network
RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 — Malaysia has welcomed the Brics Statement on Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance, voicing strong support for a vision of AI that serves development over domination, embeds ethics, reduces inequality and respects human dignity. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia's own efforts, including the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap and the AI Governance Guidelines, reflect similar principles. 'As Asean Chair, Malaysia is championing the establishment of an Asean AI Safety Network, a regional initiative to strengthen governance and capacity in this fast-moving domain,' he said during the Member State Intervention at the Brics Leaders' Summit here yesterday. Anwar, who is also the finance minister, cited the Asean Digital Economy Framework Agreement as a vital platform. 'With the right investment and standards, Asean's digital economy could reach US$2 trillion (RM8.45 trillion) by 2030. This is an opportunity we cannot afford to squander,' he stressed. Underscoring Malaysia's commitment to inclusive growth, the Prime Minister said the future will be shaped by collective resolve. 'Malaysia stands ready to work with Brics and other partners for a fairer global economy, a more coherent digital future, and a multilateralism that delivers.' 'Malaysia's 2025 Asean Chairmanship theme – 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' – aligns closely with those priorities,' said the prime minister. The Brics group — which serves as a political and diplomatic coordination forum for countries of the Global South with collaboration across diverse sectors — was initially established by Brazil, Russia, India and China. It later expanded with the inclusion of South Africa in 2011, followed by Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2023, and Indonesia in 2024. Malaysia, as well as Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan, were accepted as Brics partner countries.
