Become a Master of Evil With Darth Vader's Actual Lightsaber (if You Have $3 Million)
io9 has covered a few notable Star Wars auctions lately, as rare toys and highly collectible props have come to market in surprisingly robust amounts. But maybe the most exciting example has just emerged: Darth Vader's lightsaber. The actual, authentic, screen-matched hilt used by David Prowse and his stunt double in both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As your mind reels at the possibility of owning such a prize, consider that it's estimated to command $1 million at the lowest estimate and $3 million at the highest… and maybe more. Propstore's press release touting the sale notes that back in 2022, it sold a screen-matched miniature of a Star Wars X-wing fighter for over $2.3 million, but 'Vader's lightsaber has the potential to surpass that figure.' If any Star Wars prop is going to rake in that much dough, it's gotta be this one. The press release stresses that this is the very weapon deployed in Darth Vader's climactic battles with Luke Skywalker, used on-set by Prowse and stunt performer Bob Anderson. Here are additional details on the piece: 'It is constructed from a vintage British press camera flash handle that was transformed into Vader's infamous weapon through the fitting of dressing components such as plastic grips, calculator bubbles, and cosmetic wiring. This specific prop was further modified with a custom blade-mounting system that facilitated the installation of a wooden rod; the rod served as the blade during the choreographed fight scenes and made the physical, on-camera dueling possible. It also later served as a guide for visual effects artists to add the hand-animated glow for the final shots.' What's more, 'this is believed to be the only hero lightsaber prop from the original Star Wars trilogy with verifiable screen use ever to be offered at public auction and is widely considered one of the most sought-after items in Star Wars collecting.' Propstore's Entertainment Memorabilia Auction takes place this September in Los Angeles, after several of the biggest items—including Indiana Jones' bullwhip and belt from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Sauron's helmet from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring—complete a press tour to London, Beverly Hills, and New York. ‘Madam Secretary' co-stars Téa Leoni and Tim Daly are now real-life spouses
LOS ANGELES - Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, I now pronounce you Mr. & Mrs. "Madam Secretary." The pair of actors, who shared the screen on the CBS political drama, will now share a life together as husband and wife, making their TV romance a reality. Leoni, 59, and Daly, 69, tied the knot Sunday in a private ceremony, The Times confirmed Tuesday. Leoni and Daly began dating in the summer of 2014 and starred in "Madam Secretary" as United States Secretary of State Elizabeth McCord and her scholar husband Henry McCord. The series aired on CBS from September 2014 to December 2019. A representative for Leoni did not confirm additional details about the newlyweds' ceremony, but People reported that the actors' intimate nuptials took place in New York with only immediate family as attendees. Leoni and Daly began their romance just before the former finalized her divorce with "X Files" star David Duchovny. Leoni and Duchovny wed in 1997 after meeting on "The Tonight Show" and share two adult children, actor West Duchovny and Kyd Miller Duchovny. Before David Duchovny, Leoni was married to TV producer Neil Joseph Tardio Jr. from 1991 to 1995. Daly's marriage to Leoni marks his second: He was previously married to theater actor Amy Van Nostrand. The exes share children Sam and Emelyn. Before crossing paths on "Madam Secretary," both Leoni and Daly had established their screen careers with a variety of TV and film credits. Leoni came to the CBS series with films including "Bad Boys," "Spanglish" and "Jurassic Park III" under her belt. She also appeared in the series "The Naked Truth" and "Flying Blind." Daly's resume includes the series "Wings" and "Private Practice," and he voiced Superman in several animated projects. In a March 2024 interview with the "Really Famous With Kara Mayer Robinson" podcast, Daly spoke to its host about finding love on "Madam Secretary." He said his views about starting a committed relationship later in his life changed once he met Leoni. "It's the deepest, most fun, most truly intimate relationship I've ever had," he said. Mark Consuelos Makes ‘Live' Producer Michael Gelman Cry During On-Air Segment
Watching any live sporting event has the potential to trigger an unexpectedly emotional response, whether it's the closing moments of the Super Bowl or the final inning of the World Series. With a backstage producer at Live with Kelly & Mark, it turns out said sporting event takes the form of the famed New York City Marathon, as humorously revealed by Mark Consuelos during a recent episode of the show. During Tuesday's episode of Live, the 54-year-old Consuelos offered up a scientific breakdown of why certain individuals (participants and spectators alike) tend to well up during the New York City Marathon. "I don't know, I'd be crying after the beginning, the first quarter, the half," Consuelos quipped. He then turned his attention to Live producer Michael Gelman, who the former All My Children actor quoted as saying "he often cries watching them." As the camera jumped to Gelman, the television producer responded by confirming he does indeed tend to cry during the final stretch of the Marathon, saying, "I get very emotional at the end." "And I'm saying, you need to get your testosterone checked," Consuelos joked. Further elaborating on his answer, Gelman went to say, "It's very moving, that these people have gone through that. Sometimes they're disabled, sometimes they're crawling, but even sometimes they just went through so much and they're stumbling across the finish line, it's such an achievement." Studying Gelman's face as he said this, Consuelos promptly pointed out, "He's crying right now. You're welling up right now, get a close-up on Gelman's misty eyes." "You could be an actor, maybe," Consuelos continued with a laugh. "A soap opera actor. Summon up the tears!" Seizing upon the moment, Gelman clapped back with saying he was unsure whether he's "an actor or psychopath," triggering a flurry of laughs from the audiences and both Consuelos and co-host Kelly Ripa.
