Marcos eyes strategic partnership with South Korea after election of new president
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. is eyeing strengthening strategic partnership with South Korea following the election of its new leader.
In a brief social media post, Marcos congratulated South Korea's new liberal president, Lee Jae-myung.
''On behalf of the Filipino people, I congratulate Lee Jae-Myung on his election as President of the Republic of Korea, ''Marcos said.
''The Philippines values its deep and enduring ties with the ROK and I look forward to working with him to further strengthen the Strategic Partnership between our two countries, '' he added.
Lee had won 49.42% of the nearly 35 million votes cast while conservative rival Kim Moon-soo had taken 41.15% in the polls that brought the highest turnout for a presidential election since 1997, according to National Election Commission data.
Lee vowed to raise the country from the turmoil of a martial law crisis and revive an economy reeling from slowing growth and the threat of global protectionism. —VAL, GMA Integrated News

Chavit Singson launches 'Chavit: Legend of the Philippines' in hopes to educate and inspire globally
Chavit Singson has officially launched his book, 'Chavit: Legend of the Philippines,' which aims to offer a look into the life and lessons of the former Ilocos Sur Governor. On Friday evening at the Peninsula Manila in Makati, Singson unveiled the book at an event graced by many of his friends, including showbiz personalities Vina Morales, Pops Fernandez, Anabelle Rama, and Eddie Gutierrez. 'Chavit: Legend of the Philippines' is not a traditional autobiography but a sprawling, in-depth interview with almost 700 questions answered by Singson. Singson said that a pivotal lesson he wishes readers to glean from the book, particularly concerning his role in politics, is the supreme importance of 'credibility' for success. 'If they want to be successful, kailangan 'yung credibility nila [ay] huwag masira. Kasi like me, ang iniingatan ko, isa lang salita ko. Nobody is perfect, pero kung magsabi ka, kailangan totoo,' he said. 'Nobody's perfect. Magkamali ka, just say sorry. Kasi 'yun ang kabilin-bilinan ng tatay ko. 'Pag nawala ang credibility mo, wala na maniwala sayo. So very important ang credibility. 'Yun ang kaingat-ingatan ko.' Photo: Carby Rose Basina/GMA Integrated News 'Chavit: Legend of the Philippines' is authored by Polish author Maciej Mikurda, who admitted that one of the biggest challenges for him was compressing Singson's rich and colorful life into a single volume. 'I think the governor's life could fill like 10 books, not only just one, but we focused on the most important facts,' he said. Mikurda, who devoted almost 1.5 years to writing the book, said that his focus was placed on the most important facts while also deliberately incorporating Singson's personal beliefs, values, and the rules he lives by to provide deeper insight. The book's publisher, Riza Hansen, shared that they plan to distribute the books to many students across the country, as well as to translate the book into 15 languages, with an Arabic translation already underway, aiming to make it accessible to over 5 billion people worldwide. This ambitious endeavor includes organizing book launches in 20 world capitals across six continents. 'We want as many people in the world as possible to know who Chavit is and how amazing his story is, and to understand the beautiful history of our country, the Philippines,' she said. Outside of politics, Singson is also involved in the entertainment industry, helping to produce projects, including the recent film 'Samahan ng mga Makasalanan,' which starred David Licauco, Sanya Lopez, and more. He teased that he has another upcoming project with GMA Network, which is coming 'very soon.' 'Ewan ko kung kailan, pero nakahanda na. Sinabi sa akin nakahanda na lahat. Six OFWs from Iran arrive safely in PH
Six overseas Filipino workers (OFW) repatriated from Iran amid its conflict with Israel arrived safely in the Philippines on Saturday morning, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said. The OFWs — five who worked as shrimp hatchery technicians in Iran and one domestic worker from Dubai who accompanied her employer to Iran as a tourist — arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City. Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Administrator Patricia Yvonne Caunan, Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega, and DMW Assistant Secretary Venecio Legaspi welcomed the OFWs. The repatriated workers were also met by the MIA Medical Team as well as a social welfare officer of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. The OFWs boarded an Emirates flight to Manila. "The repatriation was made possible through the efforts of the Philippine Embassy in Tehran, led by Ambassador Roberto Manalo, in close coordination with the DMW and OWWA," the DMW said. The repatriated OFWs were given financial assistance by the DMW, OWWA, and DSWD. The MIA Medical Team also provided them with food and medical services. The OWWA will give the OFWs temporary hotel accommodations and domestic flights back to their home provinces. The DMW said two more OFWs from Iran are expected to arrive on Saturday night. "This group marks the first batch of Filipinos repatriated from Iran following the June 13 Israel-Iran conflict," the DMW said. President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Monday tasked government offices to take the necessary steps to ensure the safe and orderly return of Filipino workers who wish to avail themselves of voluntary repatriation. In a statement, Marcos said the government is already processing over 200 requests for repatriation and ''we are moving quickly to bring them home while others have opted to remain at work.'' ''I urge our fellow Filipinos to coordinate with our embassies in Tel Aviv and in Tehran. Please follow their guidance, inform them of your situation, and do not hesitate to ask for assistance,'' Marcos said. The Philippine government raised crisis alert level 3 in Israel and Iran on June 20, urging Filipinos in the area to avail of voluntary repatriation. Crisis level 3 or voluntary repatriation phase is imposed by the Philippine government on countries with deteriorating security conditions. At least 30,000 workers, mostly caregivers, are in Israel, and more than 1,000 are in Iran. Tensions heightened between Israel and Iran on June 13 after Israel struck nuclear and military targets Tehran with missiles. According to an Israeli military official, Iran had enough material to make 15 nuclear bombs within days. Iran retaliated, then both countries traded missile attacks. The US also bombed Iran nuclear sites on June 21, and Iran thereafter fired missiles at an American base in Qatar on June 23. VP Sara hoping Duterte takes oath as mayor as start of term nears
Vice President Sara Duterte is hoping and praying that former President Rodrigo Duterte will take his oath as mayor of Davao City before his new term as local chief executive starts on June 30. In a news conference, Sara Duterte said she didn't know the discussions between her father and his lawyers as regards taking his oath as city mayor. "As a Davaoeño, I hope and pray that he takes his oath because I voted for him, I want him to be mayor of Davao City. That is my prayer, but we do not know what are the discussions between lawyers and former President Duterte," Sara Duterte said. "So we wait if he takes his oath. Or he doesn't take his oath, then we will have a situation where Davao City has an acting mayor," she added. Her brother Baste Duterte was elected vice mayor and will be acting mayor if the former president is unable to take office. The former president is detained in The Hague to face crimes against humanity charges in connection with the killings related to his war on drugs when he was president and when he was mayor of Davao City. Sara Duterte also addressed the Palace's remarks as regards her recent trip to Australia where she attended a rally in support of her father. "Kapag personal siya at walang gamit na pera ng gobyerno, di mo kailangan magreport. Ganoon lang yan kasimple na kailangan ko pa iexplain… Nakakahiya na yung ginagawa nila," Sara Duterte said. "Yung totoo lang, as a Filipino, I am truly embarrassed with what is happening to our country, especially coming from the administration,' she added. "Kapag merong kwestyon sa kawalan ng ginagawa ng administrasyon, ang gagawin nila is magtuturo sa ibang tao para mawala yung mga tanong at para magugulo yung ibang tao. That is a classic political scapegoating,' Sara Duterte said.
