Jyoti Malhotra hires senior advocate, to appear in court on June 9
Malhotra, 33, was arrested on May 16 on charges of espionage and sharing sensitive information with foreign operatives.
Speaking to Hindustan Times over the phone, advocate Kumar Mukesh confirmed that Malhotra's father, Harish Malhotra, had reached out to him last week. He visited Jyoti in Hisar Central Jail on Wednesday and discussed the case with her.
'I have filed an application seeking all case-related documents from the police,' said Mukesh. 'We expect to receive the documents within three to four days. Once we review them, we will move a regular bail application. Jyoti had valid visas for her trips to Pakistan and other countries, and at first glance, the evidence against her seems insufficient to substantiate the espionage charges.'
Mukesh also appealed to the media to refrain from labelling Malhotra a 'spy' before a charge sheet is filed and the court delivers its verdict. 'Jyoti has told me the police treated her respectfully, and she has fully cooperated during interrogation,' he added.
Previously, Malhotra was represented in court by Defense Legal Aid Counsel (DLAC) lawyers Jogmani Sharma, Deepak, and Nitin. Her father Harish reiterated her innocence and expressed trust in the legal system.
'My daughter is innocent and confident that justice will prevail. She told me not to worry and assured me she hasn't done anything that would compromise the nation's sovereignty,' Harish said. 'I've given her more clothes in jail. We're placing our hopes in her new lawyer to present a strong case.'
Meanwhile, Hisar police spokesperson Vikas Kumar stated that the investigation has so far uncovered over 12 terabytes of digital data from Malhotra's three mobile phones and laptop.
'Forensic analysis revealed private chats with at least four individuals identified as Pakistani intelligence operatives (PIOs), suspected financial transactions, and signs of VIP treatment during her visit to Pakistan. The data is still under examination,' Kumar said.
Malhotra has been charged under Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and Section 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Builder held for firing into air during birthday celebration
A builder was arrested by the Pimpri Chinchwad police on Thursday night after he fired two rounds into the air during a birthday celebration, triggering panic among local residents. In the midst of the celebrations, he allegedly took out a licensed revolver and fired two rounds into the air. Hearing the sounds of gunfire, several residents alerted the police. A senior police inspector handling the case said, 'Firing in public places, even during celebrations, is a serious offence. The accused has been arrested under sections 110,125,351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and section 30 of the Arms Act.' Following the case registration, police have appealed to all citizens to refrain from celebratory firing and warned that strict legal action will be taken against those who endanger public safety.

CM calls for unity with Haryana, pushes for water re-assessment
Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday emphasised the need for closer ties between Punjab and Haryana, calling the neighbouring state as a 'younger brother' and urging the Centre, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to focus on strengthening relations rather than deepening divisions. (Ravi Kumar/HT) Speaking in the Punjab assembly on a resolution against the Centre's decision to deploy the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at Bhakra-Nangal dam project, Mann criticised the ongoing political disputes between the neighboring states, particularly over water sharing, which has been a contentious issue for decades. 'Both Punjab and Haryana contribute more than 70% to the national food pool. However, successive political parties in both states have perpetuated conflicts, especially over water rights, despite having much in common,' Mann said. He called for a more cooperative approach to development between the two states, urging them to work together for mutual prosperity. Referring to the ongoing dispute over water resources, Mann called for a re-assessment of water in rivers flowing through Punjab, including the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers, to address water-sharing arrangements with Haryana and Rajasthan. 'No review of water distribution has occurred for decades, though such reviews should be conducted every 25 years,' Mann said. The CM argued that Punjab has no surplus water to share and underscored the emotive significance of the issue for the people of the state. He also pointed out that the recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty could open up opportunities for utilising water from western rivers, such as the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab, to meet Punjab's water needs. He called for the construction of new storage dams upstream of existing ones in Himachal Pradesh to increase water availability for Punjab. Support for Diljit Dosanjh In a show of solidarity with Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, Mann defended the star against recent criticism over his role in the film Sardarji 3, which featured a Pakistani actress. Dosanjh has faced a backlash from some sections of the public, especially following the Pahalgam terror attack. Mann clarified that the film had been shot months prior to the incident, and Dosanjh should not be blamed for something outside his control. Mann also condemned the targeting of Punjabis' patriotism, noting that despite their contributions to national security and food production, they are often unfairly questioned. 'Punjab plays a crucial role in safeguarding our borders and ensuring food security for the nation,' he said. Fertile land being given to builders, alleges Bajwa Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa told the House that 40,000 acres of fertile agricultural land in the state was being handed over to real estate developers, a move he claimed undermines the state's farming community. 'This drama by the CM will not fetch him anything. The people of Punjab know the truth,' Bajwa asserted, adding that the ruling party was not serious about protecting the rights of the state's farmers. FIR against 10 in Lucknow realtor suicide case
Two days after a 36-year-old Lucknow-based real estate businessman died by suicide after going live on Facebook, Gudamba police registered an FIR on Friday against 10 individuals for alleged abetment, mental harassment, and extortion, naming them based on the realtor's pre-recorded statement in a video. A police official confirmed that the video is part of the evidence and said statements will be recorded soon. (REPRESENTATIVE IMAGE) Following a complaint filed by the deceased's elder brother, Gudamba police registered an FIR late Thursday under Sections 108 (abetment of suicide), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (assault) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The 10 people named in the FIR include local businessmen, acquaintances, and associates. According to the complaint, they had been pressuring the businessman for money, visiting his house repeatedly, hurling abuses, and issuing threats, ultimately pushing him to the edge. A police official confirmed that the video is part of the evidence and said statements will be recorded soon. 'The case has been registered and the matter is under active investigation,' said Gudamba station house officer Prabhatesh Kumar Shrivastav. The realtor, who operated from a small rented office near Tedhipulia crossing, shot himself in the head using a guard's licensed firearm on Wednesday afternoon. Just 15 minutes prior, he went live on social media, detailing the financial and emotional turmoil that led him to take the extreme step. In the over 12-minute long video, which has since gone viral, the businessman claimed he had ₹15 crore debts and had been under intense pressure for the last two-and-a-half years. He made a desperate appeal to politicians and Bollywood A-lister stars to come forward and help his family with ₹20-25 crore to ensure they are not harassed after his death. He even confessed that he sometimes doesn't have money to buy insulin for his diabetic minor daughter. 'My days are so bad that sometimes I don't even have money to buy insulin for my diabetic daughter,' he said in the emotional video, which included multiple references to people he claimed had been threatening him and demanding repayments. The deceased is survived by his wife, three daughters, father and brother.
