Loretta Swit, best known for her iconic role as Major Margaret 'Hot Lips' Houlihan on the classic TV series MASH, passed away at her New York City home on May 30 at age 87.
Her representative, Harlan Boll, confirmed her time of death as 12:01 p.m., citing suspected natural causes.
Swit earned critical acclaim during her 11-year run on MASH, receiving Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy from 1974 to 1983 and winning twice in 1980 and 1982. Over the series, her character evolved from a harsh antagonist to a complex, respected figure, notably highlighted in episodes like 'The Nurses' and 'Bug Out.'
Born Loretta Jane Szwed in Passaic, New Jersey, Swit began performing at age seven. She trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and made her TV debut in 1969. Before MASH, she appeared in popular shows including Hawaii Five-O, Mission: Impossible, and Bonanza. Her film credits include Freebie and the Bean (1974) and Race With the Devil (1975).
After MASH ended, Swit continued her acting career with TV movies such as The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and guest roles in Murder, She Wrote and Diagnosis Murder. She was also active in theater and Broadway, appearing in productions like Same Time, Next Year and The Mystery of Edwin Drood.
A passionate animal rights advocate, Swit founded the SwitHeart Animal Alliance and was honored by multiple animal welfare organizations. Donations in her memory can be made to Actors & Others For Animals or the SwitHeart Animal Alliance.

Brad Pitt's Los Angeles home burglarised
Burglars broke into Brad Pitt's Los Angeles home on Thursday, ransacking the property and fleeing with stolen items while the Oscar-winning actor was travelling to promote his new racing thriller F1, US media reported. A Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson told NBC News that a break-in took place at a residence in the Los Feliz neighbourhood around 10:30PM (0530 GMT), without officially confirming who owned the home. Police sources told NBC News and the Los Angeles Times that three suspects climbed over a front fence and broke in through the home's front window before ransacking the location and fleeing with some belongings. The value of the stolen items has not been disclosed. Pitt was not home at the time, as he has been on a global promotional tour for his new movie F1. The 61-year-old actor attended the film's premiere in London this week. The property was purchased by Pitt in 2023 for $5.5 million, according to Variety magazine. Pitt is among the most recent celebrities to have their Los Angeles homes burglarized. About $500,000 of jewellery was allegedly stolen from the home of French striker Olivier Giroud of MLS side Los Angeles FC in a burglary in February. That same month, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's residence was reportedly burglarized. On the work front, Pitt has been grabbing headlines with his Formula One film. Formula One is hoping the film cements the appeal of the Netflix docu-series Drive to Survive that has boosted Formula One's popularity and growth worldwide and particularly in the key US market. "I think there's this perception that Drive to Survive turned America onto F1 but I think there's just so many more people out there that don't know anything about it," said director Joseph Kosinski. "So there's a lot of potential still there."

In a new Rolling Stone interview, the Grammy-winning singer shared that making her upcoming album, Love in Real Life, became a lifeline during a dark chapter of depression. 'There were days I didn't think I could make it through,' Lizzo said. 'But I had to show up to the studio. Music saved my life.' She described the intense emotions she poured into the writing process, even if some of the songs didn't make the final cut. 'There were things I needed to say, even if I couldn't release them.' Lizzo admitted that she used to second-guess her lyrics out of concern for how others might feel. 'I said, 'I will never, ever be a side chick,' but then I worried, what if I offend someone?' Over time, she's realised trying to avoid criticism is impossible. 'Everybody's offended by something now. You can't please everyone. So I've started saying what I want to say.' Despite fame, her personal battles didn't magically disappear. 'My anxiety didn't go away. My depression didn't go away. I'm still the same person,' she previously told Variety. What's changed is her outlook. Now, Lizzo feels more empowered than ever. 'Yo, I'm feeling amazing now. Like, shit. I wasn't feeling bad before, but I do feel like brand-new, you know?' she said.
