‘Practical Magic 2' — Everything We Know So Far

Yahoo13-07-2025
Something magical is brewing over at Warner Bros. Last year, it was first announced that Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock were nearing a deal with the studio to make a long-awaited follow-up to their witchy 1996 romantic fantasy 'Practical Magic.' Then, teases trickled out for a few months before, and unexpectedly, WB dropped a teaser on social media in May, sending fans into a whirlwind.
The original film, which did not make a profit in its initial theatrical run, went on to become a staple of aughts cable television, brewing up generations of fans and becoming a cult favorite.

The logical next question, then, was who — besides the now-Oscar-winning Kidman and Bullock — would be returning to the quaint Owens sisters' Massachusetts home for the next adventure. In 1998, the cast included Goran Visnjic, Dianne Wiest, Stockard Channing, Aidan Quinn, Evan Rachel Wood, and Margo Martindale. Visnjic's character, Jimmy, would seem unlikely since (spoiler alert) he's dead. But everyone else?
On July 11, fans learned that the main supporting cast members, and the co-conspirators in the above-mentioned 'Midnight Margaritas,' were officially on board — Wiest and Channing. In the movie, they play Kidman and Bullock's aunts, who teach the young witches everything they need to know about their craft — and then some.
Additionally, new members of the movie's coven have since been announced — though what roles they'll play is yet unknown. Joining will be Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.
Of the original cast, only Wood — won played Bullock's daughter in the 1998 film — has spoken about whether or not she is participating. On July 11, Wood took to Instagram to reveal that (via People), 'I offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line… I was told they are re-casting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters.'
The original film was based on the 1995 novel by Alice Hoffman, who later wrote two prequels and one sequel, 'The Book of Magic' in 2021. No indications have been made if the movie will follow the plot of this book, though the script comes from the original film's co-writer, Akiva Goldsman. Oscar- and Emmy-winner Susanne Bier, who worked with Bullock on 'Bird Box' and Kidman on 'The Undoing' and 'The Perfect Couple,' will direct.
'Practical Magic 2' will be released on September 18, 2026.

Ioan Gruffudd's Still Fond of His ‘Fantastic Four' Tenure

Even before Marvel Studios retook ownership of the Fantastic Four and got a new movie into production, there was always a bit of fondness for the old Fox movies. Not so much the 2015 one, but the mid-2000s pair directed by Tim Story and starring Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, and Michael Chiklis still have their fans. Those films were general audiences' first introduction to the characters, and there remains a bit of attachment to those versions, particularly after Evans came back for brief, fiery thirds in Deadpool & Wolverine. In a recent Vulture interview, Gruffudd talked about still having 'pure excitement' over booking the role of Reed Richards. He didn't grow up reading the comics, but he felt a duty to portray Reed as 'naïve' about his powers at first, but still 'honorable and noble, and clearly a bookish character who was passionate about science and wanted to do good for the world.' 'There was a great belief that we needed to represent that friendship, camaraderie, bickering,' Gruffudd added about the dynamic with his costars. And we had that innately as actors when we got together. We all had our own responsibility, but then an understanding that this was a team, this was the Fantastic Four — we are one.' Speaking to the late Julian McMahon playing his rival Doctor Doom, he remembered his former costar as 'such a big part of this franchise and the success of the movies. You saw the envy and jealousy that Reed had towards Victor, and that there had been a friendship, so that sense of betrayal and devastation was an interesting aspect to play. […] You remember great performances from movies of this nature, like Gene Hackman in the original Superman, and that's the kind of flair and panache that Julian brought to this.' In Gruffudd's recollection, Story and everyone else were staying true to the 'lighter, family feel' of the Fantastic Four comics at the time, and he figured Fox's previous track record with the X-Men inherently meant the this would blossom into a franchise. The series ended with 2007's Rise of the Silver Surfer, though there were plans for a third movie that were later scrapped despite 'some sort of momentum.' These days, it wouldn't be out of the question for him to come back, but he says he's not been asked about it stretching one more time for Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. But even if that never happens, he remains 'incredibly proud' of playing the character and getting to be 'part of something really beautiful and much bigger than you. And I'm excited that the comic and franchise lives on.' Want more io9 news? Jordon Hudson takes subtle shot at NFL reporter after Bill Belichick crack

Jordon Hudson, the girlfriend of North Carolina Tar Heels coach Bill Belichick, appeared to throw some subtle shade at a Cleveland Browns beat reporter on Saturday. journalist Mary Kay Cabot cracked a joke about Belichick in apparent reference to Hudson while giving a speech after she received the Bill Nunn Memorial Award. The honor is given to a reporter from the Professional Football Writers of America for their "long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage." Cabot started to cover the Browns in 1991, when Belichick initially took over as head coach. She said in her speech that Belichick would call her and "yell" at her if she wrote something he didn't like. "Now I totally understand why Bill gave such a hard time," Cabot added, via "I was 28 at the time and he just couldn't relate to a woman that old." Hudson is 24 years old and the relationship she has with Belichick was a huge talking point in the spring after an interview with CBS. Hudson appeared to try to shut questioning about their relationship down, and it shed light on some of the inner workings of what's going on between the two. Hudson appeared to catch wind of the joke and reposted criticism that others had. "Not much of a 'laugh,'" the critical post read. "No wonder so many have contempt for the media, especially those who want to be the story rather than roprt (sic) on the story." The frenzy around Belichick and Hudson's relationship has simmered since its peak in the spring. Belchick is gearing up for his first season as the Tar Heels' head coach. North Carolina's season begins on Sept. 1 against TCU.
